ABYC Code of Conduct

Last week I addressed the issue of our discipline process at the Club and I am going to follow that up with a discussion of our Code of Conduct.

In 2012 the Board brought the proposed Code of Conduct to the membership for approval.  Although it sits within the Board Policies and so did not formally require approval from the membership, the Board rightly felt it was something significant enough to require approval from the general membership.

The document is essentially a set of guidelines for good conduct by all members.  The core of the Code is in 4.07 b) and c) of the Board policies.  I include them here for your convenience:

4.07 b) The Community has the right to:

  1. Enjoy the facilities and programs of ABYC and the sport of sailing and boating in a welcoming environment;
  2. Be treated with respect, dignity and consideration;
  3. A civil and honest environment free from discrimination and harassment;
  4. A place where all opinions are presented and considered with respect;
  5. An environment where property is treated with care and maintained in a respectful way;
  6. Be part of a community of sailors which abides by the rules, regulations and traditions of the sport; and
  7. An environment where everyone feels safe both on and off the water.

c)         The Community has the responsibility to:

  1. Act in a civil, respectful and welcoming manner,
  2. Behave ethically and honestly;
  3. Maintain decorum;
  4. Respect ABYC property and the property of others;
  5. Observe the best practices and rules of sailing and boating;
  6. Be mindful of their personal safety and the safety of others; and
  7. To report when they observe or are affected by, any violation of the Code of Conduct.

Until last week, the Code of Conduct was to be found on the website inside the Board Policies.  It has now been separated and it has its own category so you just click on Code of Conduct on the left side of the members' page under By-Laws etc.

Enforcing codes of conduct is a tricky business for any organization precisely because it is about acceptable behavior and different groups of people see different types of behavior as acceptable.  Each club is comprised of different types of group and therefore the application of this type of rule must be sensitive to that fact because not all of us are going to interact or behave at the club in the same way.

Where a Club doesn't enforce rules of good conduct though, it is possible for there to be a quiet deterioration of conduct that goes unremarked on by those in power - although the membership will notice and perhaps enjoy the shared space at the club just a little bit less for it.  It is a question of determining what the baseline expectation is for behavior as part of club culture.

My colleagues on the Board and I are prepared to begin the process of identifying the edges of good conduct and then reminding people of their obligations under the Code of Conduct.  This will be done with letters from me at first as a gentle reminder of the importance of respecting our shared space.  We will hold discipline as a last resort.

Forewarned is forearmed as they say.

Well the results from our pool table survey are in.  We give a full week to get all your votes, but like City TV, our analysts have declared a winner.  Overwhelmingly the members want the table to stay and by speaking with a few members have it refurbished.  The second part of the question was where it should be located.  Members have chosen the current location of the north dining area.  Over the winter it will be recovered and the corners fixed.  The results of the survey are displayed at the end of this newsletter.

This past Saturday was our annual racing awards and it was very well attended.  I would like to thank the Sailing Committee, Rennie and all the Food and Beverage Staff who helped make the evening a success. This is a very popular event and we could have sold twice as many tickets.  This event is one of the few that pushes our facility to its limits; it might be time to think of renting another venue to accommodate all that would like to attend. Please let us know your thoughts.

Regalia makes for great stocking stuffers and gifts under the tree.  Please take a look at the regalia cabinet in the front foyer.  Our new colours and styles are on display.  They can be purchased at the bar or ordered through the office.

That's all I have for this week, see ya at the club.

We have a waler of a team!  The waler installation team stayed on last Saturday until 3:00 pm to finish all six 20 ft whalers!  Tip of the sou'wester hat goes out to the waler boys!

This week we have to clear out some trenches and we have other job activities to do - see Roger Marsh's update for the details.

I am putting together a list of people who are generally available to come out and help during the week. We do not (as yet) have a schedule of jobs to be done during the week, sometimes it's a little last minute as to whether we do a job mid-week or not.  If a job should come up, we will send an email to everyone on the distribution list and if you are available - great, come on down, and if not, no worries.

If you are interested in having your name on the weekday list, send an email to abycworkparty@hotmail.com

Save the wall

SEAWALL REPAIR:  November 29th.

The cement mixer has arrived and some trenches for anchors and tiebacks have been dug but the heavy rain on Monday has really made a mess that can only be rectfied by digging by hand.  We will attempt to install one or more tie backs this coming Saturday only if we can assure that all trench debis is clear and the anchor is cemented securely and if it rains again next week nothing will be compromised.

Last week the waler installation team stayed past three o'clock to mount and secure all six 20 ft. walers. What a team!!!!!

2014 Racing Awards Night

The 2014 Racing Awards Night was held last Saturday with the usual large turnout of racing skippers and crews.  The fact that all the tickets were sold out weeks prior attests to the popularity of this event.  Fifty-one trophies and awards were handed out after dinner to our well deserving racing members and volunteers (who make it all happen).  Congratulations to all!

Among the many trophies and awards presented, 4 of the most prestigious were the following:

The Ashbridge Trophy:  To Murray & Winnie Gainer on Lively

This is the most prestigious sailing award in the club.  It is awarded to the skipper who, while  flying the ABYC burgee, brings the most prestige upon the club through accomplishments in either, or a combination of, club, and/or local and/provincial, and/or national, and/or international competition.

Over the last number of years, this boat has probably raced more miles on Lake Ontario than any other boat in our club.  In 2014, LIVELY, co-skippered by Winnie and Murray Gainer may have eclipsed her previous annual racing miles.

This past season, LIVELY competed in ALL the LROC events : ABYC, RCYC, PCYC, EYC, and QCYC Regattas, the Summerville and the Boswell Race.  Then they competed in both the Freeman Cup and Founders Race at LYRA.

Earlier this past summer LIVELY competed in the Lake Ontario 300, placing 4th in their IRC division.  But MOST NOTABLY, after 53 hours to complete the LO300, they decided to go round the Lake a second time, and were one of only a handful of boats to complete the inaugural Lake Ontario 600.

They placed second overall after 4 days and 19 hours of non-stop racing.  The Lake Ontario 600 is the longest fresh-water sailing race in the world!  And LIVELY came second.

Congratulations to Winnie and Murray Gainer, and the crew of the J109, LIVELY

The Stapleton Trophy:  To Calem Semple on Sona

Awarded annually to the best overall boat in club racing; and, that has also distinguished herself in racing events outside the club.

2014 was a good year for SONA, depite Calum spending a good chunk of time out of the country.  As it is, SONA placed 5th. in class and 7th. overall in the PHRF fleet in the Lake Ontario 300 - that was over 57 hours of non-sop racing.  This boat also finished first at the ABYC Open Regatta, and narrowly missed first place again at the QCYC Open Regatta in their IRC division.  ABYC hosted LYRA this past year and SONA placed third in IRC 3, also contributing to a 2nd. place finish for the LYRA Club Challenge.  Here at ABYC, SONA was first in Series A, 2nd. in Series C and second in the BLACK SWAN/DOUBLE TIME Challenge Race at the end of the season.

In 2013, half of the SONA crew were new, including a couple of "newbies" to sailing.  As the 2013 year progressed and into this past season, this crew, which has always included a core group of some well experienced ABYC racers is now starting to fire on all cylinders.

Congratulations to Calum Semple and the crew of SONA.

The Fauvette Trophy:  To Adam Gillis

Junior Sailor of the Year.  Awarded to the most proficient junior sailor or the junior sailor who best represents the Club in outside events.

This year, this trophy was presented to Adam Gillis who is ABYC's top Laser Sailor.  During the year, Adam placed 2nd. at the ABYC Open; 3rd. at the Steerer's Regatta; 2nd. at the PCYC Open and 5th. at the Hansen Dinghy Regatta.

Congratulations Adam Gillis.

The Commodore's Award:  To Roger Van Vlack

This award is presented by the Commodore for best representing ABYC in any branch of yachting, inside or outside the club.

For his longstanding leadership of our annual Open Regatta, and this year especially for chairing our LYRA Regatta Committee.  Herding sailors is a challenge.  Herding fleets of sailors is a bigger challenge.  Herding a team who herds fleets ... well, Roger has done it, again and again.

Our Open Regatta, and LYRA bring ABYC's name to sailors in the GTA and around the Lake, and make an enormous impact on our reputation near and far.

Thank you to Roger Van Vlack for helping ABYC get the recognition it deserves.

The ABYC Cruising Committee is looking for photos taken by Members during their Cruising activities in 2014.  We will create a slide show using the photos submitted to be shown during the Cruising Awards Night on Friday, January 16, 2015.

This request is not limited to photos taken during ABYC Club Cruises or limited to cruising on Lake Ontario.  We hope that Members who have had, or are currently experiencing cruising adventures on the 'high' seas or waterways will share their photos as well so we can create a great slide show using only 2014 photos!

Please forward your photos to David Studholme via email at: 2014cruising@gmail.com.  Deadline for photo submissions is December 21, 2014.

Let's all fill David's "In Box"!

Early Ice Surprise
___________________________________________________________________________________

Our harbour normally freezes over around the second week of December.  Last year it froze over on November 29th.  This year - November 19th., almost 3 weeks ahead of the "average".  However the freeze was short-lived.  Unusually warm days followed and the ice was gone.  It will probably be back very soon!

The Racing Awards Night was a fantastic success.  Everyone enjoyed the Award presentations, great food and the fun.  The highlight of the evening was the Silent Auction in support of the ABYC Junior Race Team.

Thanks to everyone's generous support, we were able to raise just over $2500.  We continue to work toward our goal of funding the new coach boat.  I will give more details next week regarding how much the fund raising effort has achieved so far, and how much more we need to reach our goal.

Stay tuned!

John Curtis -
Former Olympic Sailor

________________________________________________

John Curtis will be coming in from Kingston on December 11 to present and narrate two videos on preparation for the Transpac Race and racing in the Transpac.  John was a member of the Canadian Team that competed in 2010.  This is a great opportunity for our members and friends to meet a former Olympic Racer and to see high end ocean racing at its best.

John's career has been anything but conventional, although successful in multiple dimensions.  John is a lawyer, mediator and Olympian.  A 16 year veteran of the Canadian Sailing Team, John represented Canada in Sailing at the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, in the Tornado Class.

With his extensive experience in sport as an athlete and later as High Performance Manager and General Counsel to the Canadian Yachting Association, John became experienced in providing legal services specific to amateur sport.  He continues work in this field acting for several National Sport Organizations, concentrating on team selection disputes, governance and policy.

John has continued his competitive sailing in the International 14 Class and in offshore racing - recently competing in the 2010 World Championships in Sydney Australia and finishing 3rd. in the 2011 Transpacific Ocean Race (LA to Honolulu) aboard the 60 footer - O CANADA.  He also enjoys sailing at home in Kingston with his two children, Jamie and Annika.

We will also be raffling off 3 pairs of tickets for the Toronto International Boat Show.  Each pair is worth $36. Tickets will be 1 for $2 or 3 for $5.
