Call for Volunteer(s)

Now that the sailing season is over and the boats are on the hard awaiting spring, it's time to invest in preparations for the 2015 season.

There are a number of organizations and levels of government that offer grants or funds for a variety of things.  For example, there are funds available for hiring summer workers; there are grants available for Sailing Schools that support community development, women in sport, etc.

We urgently need a volunteer or two who have experience applying for grants to work with the VC Finance, the Club Administrator and myself.

Please contact me ([email protected]) if you are interested and have time available over the next month to work on grant applications.

Yours,

Bob Hedley, Commodore

Call for help from the Senior Vice Commodore

Over this winter I am hoping that we will be able to address the longstanding issues about membership categories and the transitions from one category to another that have been around for a long time.  I want to do this in light of the Not-For-Profit legislation that has been passed and may come into force sometime later this year (we don't know when or if).  I have Board approval to establish an ad hoc committee charged with reviewing the membership categories and I would like to ask any of you who may have an understanding of the new law and/or a particular interest in participating in the membership category review to be in contact with me.  I am hoping to attract at least another lawyer or two so we can duke out the legal stuff between us.  Please contact me at [email protected] if you are interested.

We had a safe and successful haul-out again this year and I am grateful to everyone for their participation and care.  As we go forward we will be fine-tuning our safety protocols particularly for launch and haul-out and we will be giving notice of what will be required of members to ensure that their cradles are in solid shape, that their participation in the work days is done in the safest way possible and that we develop respect for our safety officers.

Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on your particular view) having a lawyer sitting as Senior Vice Commodore means that there will be increased focus on processes at our Club.  Having protocols in place in order to prove that we have done our work with due diligence is one of the ways to protect the Club and members should anything go wrong.  I think we do a great job at this Club, what I am looking to do is clarify how we do such a great job so that if there is ever a problem we can immediately respond with how we do what we do.  So I will be asking for details in many of the processes undertaken in doing our work - please do not presume that I want the processes to change, for the most part I simply want to understand the processes, this will allow me to protect the club and every one of you to the best of my ability.

Discipline is a horrible part of the role of the Senior Vice Commodore.  As a member of ABYC, it is very unpleasant for me to be called upon to question another member's behavior.  From my perspective although it is unpleasant, it is an important part of what I have taken on as SRVC and I do my utmost to undertake this part of my role as clearly and as fairly as I can.  I follow the rules meticulously (here being a lawyer does help) and I try and make the process as clean and as fair as I can.  I know that there is lots of talk around the club about the process and that is also, unfortunately, something that I have to deal with in my role - and it is pretty clear that it doesn't matter what is done there will be those who line up on either side of any discipline issue.  I do, however, want to assure everyone that I do not take this part of my role lightly and I am doing the best I can to protect the interests of every member equally.  I have no personal agenda on these issues and if I ever do I will step aside and let another Flag Officer take the lead.

In the next S2S I will outline the process for discipline and the role of the Board of Directors in relation to the management of the Club to make the process clear.  If anyone has any questions about it I am happy to answer them and if anyone disagrees with the process I will also address their concerns.  Again, [email protected].

Launch 2015 Date

Result of Poll regarding ABYC's 2015 Launch Date

In last week's S2S we ran a poll to determine the members' preference for launch date in 2015.

The options were: April 25-26 or May 2-3

The replies from the 57 respondents are:

April: 33 votes, May: 24 votes

Accordingly, since the earlier launch date seems to be favoured, we are planning spring launch in 2015 for April  25-26.

TOONIE TALK THURSDAYS ARE BACK!!!!

Join us on the 2nd. Thursday of the month starting November 13, 2014 for ABYC's lecture series.

Kicking off our Toonie Talks are our own ABYC members who have ventured outside our local Lake Ontario Shores; down the Erie Canal, down the ICW to the inviting waters, sandy beaches and rum cocktails of Florida and the Bahamas!

Rick Itenson will kick off the evening, Phil Giddings and Krista Slack have put together a presentation of their trip down the ICW to Florida and we may even have Bruce Hannah available to answers questions on the pros & cons of trucking your boat down to Florida.

Once again, we ask that you donate a Toonie for our worthy ABYC Cause.  This year, your co-ordinators have chosen to support our Opti Program; the future of our sport.

Start Time: 7pm in the clubhouse.

See you there!

Next Month....December 11th - Former Olympian John Curtis will present and narrate two videos. One on the preparation for the California Campaign for the Transpac and one on the race itself in which John was a crew member.

The wall repair teams are under way and progress is being made - see Bernie's S2S update for pics and deets (fyi - that's how the kids say details *:) happy).

We are looking for more people to come out and lend a hand, and we are really searching for team leaders to handle a team.  If you are not sure how to sign up, what job would suit you, or are only available as 'walk in' on a Saturday morning, come up to the club house Saturday morning and I can help out assigning you a job or answering any questions you may have.

We generally start between 8:30 and 9:00 am in the morning and work until 1:00 pm - with a coffee break of course.  And, get this, for work parties we have FREE COFFEE.  Yes you heard that right!  If the collapsing walls are not enough motivation, then this should do it!  LOL (as the kids say).

See you Saturday!

Save the wall

November 15th. - Seawall Repair

The new steel wall is in place, all 72 sheets were driven in over 3 days.  A slightly longer time than anticipated, we hoped for 2 1/2  days but well within our realistic overall plan.  Given that the whole harbour is some form of construction fill, one can never predict what is under the surface.

Last weed Teams continued fabricating walers and anchors and a new team started and almost completed drilling the concrete cap for new anchor bolts to lock the new wall to the cap.  On Tuesday a small team began experimenting with the epoxy injection system to lock the anchors in place this coming Saturday.

Here is a list of work teams that will be active Nov. 15th and will continue until further notice.  Watch this space for notice of other work team starts as work progresses.  Soon concrete mixing and compacting will start and we will need even more workers.

Active Teams Nov. 15th until work team  job is complete

Survey and location team
Trench Evacuation Team
Anchor Fabrication Team
Water Fabrication Team
Tie-Back Fabrication Team (Materials have arrived)
Metal Cutting Team
Worksite Co-ordinators
Concrete Cap Drilling Team

This was fairly typical of most of the sheets driven last week although some went into the lake bottom easier than others.  Occasionally a sheet would encounter a rock or some other obstruction and could not be driven to the desired depth.  In those situations, the top of the sheet will be cut so that it will be at the same level as the others.  ABYC Members included in this video were:  Roger Marsh, Alan Jenkins, Victor Taylor, Yves Lemieux, Brian Somerville and Dave Horner (absent is Dave Cuthbert).

By the end of the 3rd day of driving, a total of 125 feet of new seawall was in place.  Now the installation of tie-backs etc. needs to be done before January.  Many hands will be needed for that.
