Poll regarding ABYC's 2015 Launch Date
____________________________________________________________________________

Members!

Your Rear Commodore and VC Marine are talking to determine the best day for launch next year.

Some members have indicated that the earlier the better, as it gives more time for racing and cruising.

Others want another week to get their boats painted and polished.

The options are:  April 25-26  OR  May 2-3

What's your preference?  Please respond to the poll and let your Board know!  We'll be considering any responses received before midnight, Friday, and we will let you know the results in next week's S2S.

Send replies to:     rearcom@abyc.on.ca  (Click on link:)

The subject line should state "Vote for ABYC Launch"

Yard Clean-up - East Fence Line

The area between the east fence line and the closest line of stored boats has become a dumping ground for all kinds of unwanted items, debris and depots containing hazardous deteriorating paint and solvent containers.  Club members are reminded that personal items are to be stored under their boats during the winter.  Members who have items stored along the east fence are asked to remove wanted items from Club property or store them below their boats.  Unwanted items should be deposited in the large bin located behind the Winch house.  Hazardous materials such as paints and solvents, etc. must be removed from the club property.  Do not store hazardous materials under your boat.

Starting Saturday, November 22, the area along the east fence will be cleared and all remaining items will be disposed of.

Your immediate action to clean up and remove items will be greatly appreciated.

Members Dinghies

All members having dinghies stored behind Casa Ballman are asked to identify their property with weather proof labels.  Dinghies which are in disrepair and unfit for use will be disposed of after November 22 unless they are clearly labeled by the owner.

For the Board,

Erik Dullerud,

VC Marine

As mentioned already in this edition of S2S, the front entrance is now complete and it looks great!  The Seahorse, (I call her Sally... after Mustang Sally), was crafted by Mike Robertson and the light design by Harvey Harman really set it off.  The lights were a challenge, we had to order special outside LED's and a transformer to light it up.  When they arrived at the distributors warehouse they had no idea how to deal with them, but in good old fashioned ABYC way, we "got er done".  Again thanks to all who worked on this project, it was almost a year to the day from start to finish.

This past Saturday was a beehive of activity in the clubhouse during the all day work party.  Windows cleaned, trophies and brass polished and dusting of all the rafters has really made the club look good.  Thanks to all involved.  Now the clubhouse may have been cleaned up, but a mess was made in another club building.  Mike Robertson, John French, Kirk Cameron, Graham Toms, John Waller and I got a bit dirty doing the demolition of the men's washroom and part of the women's washroom in the Junior Sailing School.  These two washrooms have been neglected for a long time and the rot and damage we found behind the walls confirmed that.  The women's will get an opening window, new sinks and a paintjob. The men's will get new showers and a new floor.  They will be styled after the pool washrooms at Port Credit Yacht Club. Mike Robertson (again) will be the lead on this project.  If you have any renovation skills and would be interested in this project please let Mike or myself know.

In keeping with repairs and renovations, the roof trusses in the clubhouse; a beautiful architectural detail, are of course a structural part of the roof.  Last winter's snow load did some damage to them.  A few of them have shifted and started to pull from their plates. There is no immediate danger, but we will be having them repaired in the next month.  Erik Dullerud is in negotiations with a roof truss company to do the repairs before winter sets in.  There will be some minor disruptions in the clubhouse but the food and beverage operation will continue to operate during this work.

This past Sunday was the second annual Elizabeth Kimball Memorial Arts and Crafts Show.  I am amazed at the talent in the club.  Photography, pottery, knitting, stained glass and paintings were all on display.  I really enjoy events like this, something that brings all members together and give them a chance to socialize.  Although there was no judging or prizes awarded (as it should be at an event like this) for me personally one piece stood out.  Barb Baniuk's pencil drawing of a cactus did stop me in my tracks, the beauty of the drawing and the choice of matting and frame was stunning.  I look forward to next year and hope for more exhibitors.  There was one small disappointment; one piece of art went missing.  We hope it will show up soon.

Thanks all for this week, see ya at the club!

ABYC Opti Race Team Season Over
- Fundraiser is still on.
- Mike G. Goldfarb, Coach
_________________________________________________________________

As many of you saw, the ABYC Opti Race Team trained late into fall this year; well past haulout.  Our team worked hard in the cold to extend our season and keep improving their skills.  The Race Team and ABYC's Junior Club have both been put away for 2014.  We now set our sites on 2015!

As you all know we have been fundraising for a new coach boat all season.  We have sold clothing, cookies accepted donations and we are about to start another phase of our fundraiser.  At Racing Awards Night on November 22 the ABYC Opti Race Team is hosting a silent auction.  You will have a chance to bid on some amazing items with 100 percent of proceeds going towards ABYC's new coach boat.

We have had some great items donated, but we still need your help!  Can you donate anything to this auction?  It can as simple as donating a few hours of your time, ask if your workplace can contribute something, ask your friends, family or neighbours.  Together we can create a great auction and raise money to make ABYC Junior Sailors the best on the lake!

Here are a few suggestions:
  • Gift Certificates
  • Hand Crafts
  • 1/2 day boat cruise
  • One Sailing Lesson
  • Cottage Rental
  • Game Tickets
  • Theatre Tickets
  • Professional Services
Please contact myself or Laura Goddard if you can contribute or help in anyway.
mikeg@ajsportsworld.com or 416-709-9054

I will see you all on November 22!

We did a lot - all 115 of us!

It's official - we passed the test!  When I woke up last Saturday morning (the All Day Work Party morning) and saw the snow falling in Markham, my heart sank a bit and I thought... this must be a test of our resolve.  Will everyone still come out to the work party?  Will the critical brick-removal job get done?  What about Casa Ballman clean up, vine trimming, yard clean up, tire line retrieval, will they get done?

And the answer is a resounding YES!  We had over 115 hearty souls turn out for the day.  We did plumbing, block recovery, cradle repairs, vine trimming, polishing the trophies, the bar rail, the doors, the marine telegraph; we removed fender boards, washed windows, cleaned tables and chairs, demolished the Sailing School washrooms, removed bricks in preparation of the wall repairs to take place this week, and the CO-OP team did work on Tricana.  I could go on and on.  So great to see everyone come out and lend a hand.  And what a lunch buffet provided by our fabulous kitchen team!

That's all well and good for last week, but what's next (you're thinking)?  The wall repairs continue on.  This Wednesday (today) and Thursday the contractor will be here to start driving steel.  If you are available during the week and can make it to the club to help out, it would be greatly appreciated!

Next up at the Saturday morning work party we are making walers (whatever those are), anchors and digging trenches.  It is really important to get going with these activities before the ground freezes - no time to lose!  Go teams!

Cruisers and Friends

Cruising Awards Dinner, Friday, January 16th, 2015

This is a reminder to mark your calendars for the 2024 Cruising Awards to be held on Friday, January 16th, 2015.

In order for us to prepare for the Cruising Awards Presentation, we ask that you please submit your miles navigated and the number of Ports and Harbours visited on Lake Ontario during 2014 and submit this information to me (luba11@sympatico.ca).  This information is required so we can purchase the required number of flags to be handed out.

During the evening, we will present the Distance Awards for those boats that have accumulated 1,000 and 500 nautical miles respectively on the Great Lakes as well as the Cruise participation flags.  We will award the following trophies: Hans Ballman, Harbour Master's Hat, Ports of Call, Jack Shirt, Ed Wilson, Ron Mitchell, Cruising Fleet Captain's Discretionary Award,  and the Day Sailing award.

TOONIE TALK THURSDAYS ARE BACK!!!!

Join us on the 2nd. Thursday of the month starting November 13, 2014 for ABYC's lecture series.

Kicking off our Toonie Talks are our own ABYC members who have ventured outside our local Lake Ontario Shores; down the Erie Canal, down the ICW to the inviting waters, sandy beaches and rum cocktails of Florida and the Bahamas!

Rick Itenson will kick off the evening, Phil Giddings and Krista Slack have put together a presentation of their trip down the ICW to Florida and we may even have Bruce Hannah available to answers questions on the pros & cons of trucking your boat down to Florida.

Once again, we ask that you donate a Toonie for our worthy ABYC Cause.  This year, your co-ordinators have chosen to support our Opti Program; the future of our sport.

Start Time: 7pm in the clubhouse.

See you there!

Next Month....December 11th - Former Olympian John Curtis will present and narrate two videos. One on the preparation for the California Campaign for the Transpac and one on the race itself in which John was a crew member.

Well Done Gardeners
- Ann Kay, Chair of Landscaping Committee
_________________________________________________________________________

A very
big thanks to all of the wonderful help that we had last weekend to put our gardens to bed.  A team way too big to list individually, but as a group, we managed to accomplish a great deal.

Hopefully our winter will be kinder to us than last year and that we manage to augment our past efforts.  It is a huge property to maintain and manage and your efforts will hopefully be rewarded next spring.

Here is to the colour and life that we will expect come next season...

Many, many thanks.

Ann

All Trophies must be returned by November 9th.
- Joanne Wright
______________________________________________________________________________________

We had our annual trophy cleaning session on Saturday at the All Day Work Party.  Thanks to those  who helped out.  Even our Junior Members helped out - thanks to Simon Parsons for all his schlepping the trophies up and down the stairs.

We noticed there are a large number of trophies that have not been returned.  If you received a trophy last year and have not returned it by haulout as requested, please make sure you return it within the week to the Communications Room.  A lot of these trophies have to be engraved and time is fast approaching for the annual Racing Awards Night on Saturday, November 22.  If you could return them cleaned and shined, that would be terrific, but not essential, just return them asap!

If you have any questions please contact Joanne Wright at

Mooring Tire Lines
- Paul Lefneski, Harbourmaster
____________________________________________________________________________________

All of the tire lines were removed and placed on the dock at the All Day Work Party on Saturday.  Please pick up your lines from the dock so that you have them in the spring.  They will not remain on the docks forever.  I will arrange a team to install your lines on the tires at the Spring All Day Work Party
