End of the Season?  Not quite!

As the crew returned from the Pan Am 2015 practice session on the Jack Cameron, we ran into a happy and boisterous group of young sailors, practicing just South of the club.

Toques were commonplace, usually worn with a smile.  In the background, all the big boats were sitting on shore.  Are the juniors crazy for going out to practice in late October, or are we crazy for ending our season in mid-October?

Pan Am 2015

The planning started years ago, with ABYC getting involved last summer.  This last weekend was a practice regatta at RCYC, with most of the volunteers for next summer involved.

Dave Steenbergen, Liz McIntyre, Tom Shenstone and I were freezing our tailfeathers off as we worked with the more than 45 people who will make up the race committees next July.  Another practice weekend has been scheduled, as part of the TS&CC IceBreaker regatta in May.  The good news about practicing in October and May for a July regatta is that the big event will seem much easier without mittens and floater coats on!

While the race committee is mostly set, the organization is still looking for volunteers for all different aspects of the games.  Go to www.toronto2015.org

Seawall Repair starts in earnest with the November 1st.
All Day Work Party.

We have also booked the contractor to drive the new steel wall for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th. of November so we really have to work hard on the 1st. to be ready.  The wall must be secure by freeze-up in early January to prevent damage so we do not have time for miss-steps.

If you have not yet done so, you must sign up for new jobs in the Job Jar.  You can be on more than one team as long as you are not required on both teams at the same time.  As you sign up you will receive an acknowledgement email.  If there is a reason for any change of team work before any work party each affected member will also receive an email from the team lead.

Here is a list of work teams that will be active starting November 1st. and will continue until further notice.  Watch this space for notice of other work team starts as work progresses.

Active Teams from November 1st. until the work team job is complete.

Great news everyone!  We have lots of jobs to go around!  After a successful haul out of the boats - time to turn our attention to the maintenance of yard, club house and most importantly the wall repairs.

The all day work party is scheduled for Saturday, November 1st from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Although we have jobs for everyone, we are especially looking for Team Leads on the Wall Repair Project.  This is the chance you have been waiting for!  Nothing looks better on a job resume than team leadership experience (and we provide references too!).  29 teams have been entered into the Job Jar, the duration that each team is needed is not necessarily over the entire length of the project.  Please take a look and step up for a team lead position.  It is essential that our club walls be repaired and it would be great to get the team leads established.

Of course, we need people to sign up to work on the teams as well, and we have lots of jobs for the all day work party.  So as you can see we have lots for everyone - equal opportunities for all!  To sign up, look in the Job Jar for the list of jobs below.  If you have any issues with the list you can email abycworkparty@hotmail.com.

Crane Haulout Thank You
- Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chairman
_____________________________________________________________________

The crane teams hauled 153 boats this year, five more than last year, finishing safely and on time for the large crane and earlier than planned Saturday for the small crane.  The staging process worked well for the hydraulic trailer boats hauled by the small crane, but required some modifications for the large crane.  Lessons learned will be incorporated into next year's haul plan.
I want to thank everyone on all the crews for their contribution to another successful haulout.  It is very much a team effort and would not work without everyone pitching in to the degree that they do.

I would also like to recognize the particular contributions of the following people:  John Moody for organizing all of the crews; small crane foreman Roy Little; large crane foreman Neil Payne (who worked despite fighting the flu); equipment managers Claude Michaud and Robert St. Hilaire; signalmen Jarrod Armstrong, Bob Wilson, Bob Hedley, Joe Simpson and Paul McDonald; dock foremen Alfie Nonnewitz, Doug Heldman, Petra Fischer, and Terry Fagan; cradle crew chiefs Kate Driscoll and Stewart Beak (who also doubled as large crane foreman on Saturday), Bruce Hannah and Cam Hind; Bernie Caron for driving the tractor; hydraulic trailer foremen Helmut Ott and Doug Workman; Chris Deeley and Mike Leroux for special efforts at both haulout and the cradle layout; Caroyln Weckesser and the Dock Ladies for keeping the boats coming smoothly despite the inevitable changes; Rebecca Crumlish and her team of Boat Riders; Jim Allen, Stan Gap and the Safety Officers; Rennie, Greg and the yard, office and kitchen staff for all sorts of help and support, not the least of which is feeding all of us; and Paul Lefneski both prior to haulout and with the tow boat crews during haulout.

There has already been good feedback on a few points that should improve the process for next year, and these suggestions and other observations will find their way into the planning process going forward.

Anthony Mirvish
Crane Committee Chairman

Railyard Thank You

Our boats are on the hard, nestled in their cradles once again.  The efforts of one and all made it happen. Some tasks call for special skills and some for brute strength.  The Winchhouse crew; John Ballman, Brian Cunningham, Peter Lancaster-Brooks.  Thank-you.  The Cradle crew; Gerald Hammers, Stuart Gibbons, Richard Kane, John Harrison, Chuck Gravely, Vaughan Brett, Scott Parsons.  Thank you.  And our Railcar car callers; Gord Buchanan, Rick Humphrey.  Thank you.  An extra thank you to Tom Jones and those who helped him on way #2.  Brian Somerville and Kevin Forward for their help in the yard through this last week.  Thank you.  I can't fail to mention all who pulled with a will through rain and bits of sunshine. Thank you one and all.

Last but certainly not least Bruce Morrison.  Bruce continues to help and guide me in this endeavour called Rail Yard Chair.  I might even say all that's changed is I now have the title.  I kid you not, he saved my bacon.  THANK YOU BRUCE.

Dan Marcil, Rail Yard Chair.

Thank You Dock Ladies
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Please join me in saying thank you to the Dock Ladies who worked during all three days of haulout! Regardless of the role, be it liaising with the crane foreman, the rail foreman, the owners on the dock, or making PA announcements, our team's goal was to make sure the right boat, was at the right haulout location at the right moment...mission accomplished!

Thank You Boat Riders
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Special thank you to Boat Riders for assisting boat owners during 2014 Haulout.  The purpose of the boat rider is to assist boat owners to get their boat from their dock to the assigned small or large crane area safely.  Also, not to take other volunteers away from their work areas during Haulout.

Here are some of the boat riders observations for safety ... As safety is a big issue it is important that the boat owners are ready at Haulout regardless of where their boat is on the Haulout list.  Many boat owners did not ensure safety and their boat deck was not clear of all items ie., Electrical cables, lines etc.  This caused a safety issue at the crane areas for the volunteers waiting to place the slings under the boat before the crane hauled the boat to its cradle ie., tripping over items on deck .. this is not safe.  Friday the boat list schedule was changed several times and boat riders needed to be back on the dock to assist other boat owners.  Boat owners should not leave their dock until the dock ladies are requested to notify the boat owner to leave the dock.  On several occasions the boat list was changed Friday and Saturday and boat owners did not listen and wait for the dock ladies notification and continued to leave their docks.  This caused some back up in the channel for the large crane and the north channel Coatsworth Cut small crane and their boat riders were needed for other boat owners.

Boat owners we are looking forward to your cooperation in 2015 and thank you from the boat riders.

In closing, I want to thank my team of boat riders for their commitment over Friday and Saturday at 2014 ABYC Haulout

Alison Brannen, Bart Smit, Christy Buchanan, Dawn Carey, Don Sturgeon, Emily Sawolak, Fergus Mallon, Jamie Donaldson, Matthew Perraton, John Chittley, Julie Hughes, Pascal Desrosiers, Susan Hannah, Tim Hill, Neil Sinclair - Hope you will sign up for 2015 Launch.

Yours in Sailing,

Rebecca Crumlish,

Coordinator, Boat Riders 2014 Haulout.

Another season has come and gone and thanks to everyone's efforts, we've had another successful Haul-out.  Please join me in thanking the tireless dedication of our Tallow Crew: Trixie Hoyer, Pat Chittley,  Eleanor MacKay, Jean Gap...but wait, I can't  just say "ladies" anymore.  We've finally broken the gender glass ceiling and made ABYC history thanks to our newest member.  That's right, please also join me in thanking Neil Sinclair, who graciously answered my call for help.  Kudos to the ladies and gentleman, who helped keep everything sliding so smoothly.

Dance Tips for ABYC's Famous Halloween Party

ABYC's Famous Halloween Party is on Saturday!

In chatting with fellow members, I can feel the buzz and excitement in the air. Several people have asked me what are some good frightening dances we can do on Saturday night? Here are two of my favourites along with the dance steps.

I know you won't resist showing off these moves at the party!

"The Monster Mash by Bobby "Boris" Pickett

Begin with your feet facing inward. While on the balls of your feet, you rotate them outward, second position with your heels together.

You repeat this motion twice, then on the third foot rotation, you shift your weight onto your left foot and lift the right foot to your side. You then repeat these steps but this time you shift your weight to your alternate foot, extending the other leg outward the opposite way. Follow these simple steps, all the while raising your arms in a monstrous manner up and down in unison to the beat of the music.

***Fun fact: most people like to stick their arms out in this fashion to imitate the Frankenstein Monster.

The Time Warp by Richard O'Brien

Easily the most well-known horror dance craze of all time, the Time Warp has been a fan favorite since it's creation in 1973. The steps to the dance are simple:

It's just a jump to the left, then a step to the right with your right foot.
You put your hands on your hips, and tuck your knees in together, making for an awkward squat.
Followed by a pelvic thrust backward and forward three times that will literally drive you insane.
Then, using your hips and knees, you twist your body clockwise as you make a light bounce with your feet and knees.

Anyway, enough nonsense, time to get back to dancing!"
