Awards & Trophies

The process for selecting the winners of the Ashbridge & Stapleton awards requires that anyone with any non-local sailing results (beyond club, LORC, LOSHRS, & LYRA) that they wish to have considered must email them to the Rear Commodore for consideration, and September 30th was the published deadline in our Events Book.

Having received none to date, I'll extend the deadline until midnight, Friday October 10th.  Email results to rearcom@abyc.on.ca

Our awards coordinator, Joanne Wright, will be organizing trophies very soon.  Haulout weekend is the deadline for returning trophies, and it would be better to get them in the weekend before, as we all know how busy the club is on on Haulout weekend.

New Season

When sitting down to write this article I said to myself, self, do not use the phrase "well here we are at the end of the sailing season".  I prefer to look at it as the beginning of a new season.  Yes, there will be no weekend cruise to Port Credit or 300 mile races around the lake, (which was my favorite sail of the season and in the top ten sails I have ever done) but that does not mean our club goes into hibernation.  This is the time of year we begin planning for next year.  Our Entertainment Committee has already prepared the schedule for the balance of the year and for most of next year.  Start thinking about your costume for the Halloween Party!  Wednesday Wings and Games nights will start picking up, a great mid-week fun night out. In November we will have the members' Arts and Crafts exposition.  This was a fantastic event last year.  I was blown away when I got to the top of the stairs and saw the display of member's artwork, quilts, pottery and so much more.  Check S2S for the date.  Hopefully this year we might see some of our photographers' work!  I won't get into Christmas at this point.

This coming weekend we will be having our Thanksgiving Brunch.  Paul, Katie and the crew will have a fantastic spread for the member's.  Be sure to call the office for a reservation.  The menu is in this issue of S2S.

In this "new season" we also have a lot of work to accomplish.  In the property/house department we have a lot of work to do.  Projects that we have planned are renovations in the Junior Sailing School washrooms, wood refinishing on the main floor, sound baffling in the main hall and some painting.  I will have the projects set up in Job Jar in the next week.

During haul-out Linda DeRusha and her crew will have the Regalia table set up.  You will find some new designs and some real deals on the older stock.  Be sure to stop by during lunch and check it out.

Well, that's my rant for this week, see ya at the club!

November 1 = Fall All Day Work Party
- Sue Hamilton, Work Party Coordinator
__________________________________________________________________________

As everyone is busily preparing their boats for haulout, I would like to note that the
Fall All Day Work Party is happening two weeks after haulout on Saturday November 1st, 9:00am - 4:00 pm.  We are preparing the list of jobs that need to be done around the property to prepare for winter.  We have many inside and outside jobs to be done including gardening, polishing trophies, cleaning up outside Casa Ballman and yes... wall repair activities.  All jobs will be listed in the Job Jar - some are there, some need to be added, but hopefully by next week, we will have all jobs.

Toonie Thursdays for 2014/15
- Jim Allen and Petra Fischer
_______________________________________________________

Toonie Thursdays returns to ABYC in November with monthly programs on the 2nd Thursday of each fall and winter month from November to April.

Last year we ran 7 monthly programs and raised $690 for our Junior Sailing Program and the Corinthian Fund.   We had over 300 people out for these programs and we want to thank everyone who came out to enjoy the programs and to support Toonie Thursdays.  This year we will be raising funds to go towards the purchase of a new Coach Boat for the OPTI Racing Team.

Our programs for the upcoming season are:

November 13 - Sailing South for the winter.  A presentation by several ABYC members who have gone sailing down south to get away from an Ontario winter.

December 11 - Former Olympian John Curtis will present and narrate two videos. One on the preparation for the California Campaign for the Transpac and one on the race itself in which John was a crew member.

January 8 - Captain Dave Mathews - Captain Dave is a regular contributor to Ontario Sailor where he writes articles about his many deliveries.  Captain Dave will present on Deliveries - The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.

February 12 - Author Jane Fairburn - Jane will talk about her book : Along the Shore: Rediscovering Toronto's Waterfront Heritage.  Several club members have said that her book is a must read.

March 12 - Our own Bernie Caron will present on his Atlantic crossing from Halifax N. S. to Plymouth, England in 1978 on a 32 foot boat with 2 other crew members (and without the modern equipment that we consider indispensable today).  His presentation includes many interesting pictures.

April 9 - John Gayford - Returns to ABYC.  Two years ago John gave a presentation on building his boat in Oakville and then sailing it to New Zealand.  This season John will be telling us tales of his recent sailing in the South Pacific including New Zealand and Australia.

ABYC's Famous Halloween Party

Halloween has always been a holiday filled with mystery and magic.  Create a little mystery and magic of your own by joining us on Saturday, 25 October for ABYC's Famous Halloween Party.  Don't forget to invite your family and friends to share in the enthusiastic attitude of ABYC members.

In the spirit of Halloween, I've provided some Trivia you can use around the Thanksgiving dinner table this weekend:

Did you know?

"The tradition of dressing in costume for Halloween has both European and Celtic roots.  Hundreds of years ago, winter was an uncertain and frightening time.  Food supplies often ran low and, for the many people afraid of the dark, the short days of winter were full of constant worry.  On Halloween, when it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world, people thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes.  To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits.  On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter."

ARCHIE WALKER RACE

We had our last event of the season on Saturday, under very "interesting" conditions.  It was cold, wet and just a tad breazy - somehow, a fitting end to this season.  When conditions out there are miserable for the racers, please keep in mind that it is Just as unpleasant for the Race Committee.  Thanks very much to the crew for sticking it out on a rockin' and rollin' Committee boat:

Keri Humber (RO), Brian Chapman, Eleanor MacKay, Elaine Parker, Max Smith and Rebecca  Lewis

Much appreciated, guys.

Race Committee Appreciation

- Hazel Wood & Dan Gregory

______________________________________________________________________________________

At the end of the season, it finally dawned on us that we should be doing something to show our appreciation to the Race Committee for all the work they do that enables us to compete and try to show off.  We sent out an invitation for RC members to join us for a sail on Satori.  Due to the short notice, most people were already committed but would have loved to have gone sailing.

We were delighted that Molly re-arranged her plans so that she could make it - Molly who has clocked 175 hours on race committee alone!  We met on the island (where she had been spending the day with a friend) and motored (wind was very light) from RCYC to ABYC.  On the way, we stopped into the little cove between the Eastern Gap and the Leslie Spit.  Molly did a great job of helming!  And with the stop-off in the cove, we were most appreciative of Molly's Designated Driver status.  We finished off with a BBQ on the stern of Satori.

Perhaps next year, we can get all the racers to consider what we can do to show our appreciation.  Some might offer to take RC members out for a sail, some might offer a lunch or dinner and others might consider burnt offerings of food and beverages to the Committee Boat after races.  We might even consider setting up a fun race with the RC members helming and crewing and the rest of us as support.

We could even organize a Race Committee Party at or near the end of the race season.  Maybe have it in Bay Belle Park with a band!  Make it an Annual Event!

THANK YOU RC!!!

Haul out is just weeks away and the Tallow Crew is desperately short of volunteers.  Haul out is our busiest time and we could really use two or more people to help out.  No experience required.  We'll be glad to show you the ropes. Just come wearing old clothes and shoes and we will supply the fashionable white overalls.

We would love to have you, so please let me know if you are interested.  You can call or text me at  416-219-0519

YARD LAYOUT AND LIST OF BOATS

A hard copy of the yard layout has been posted on a foam board in the Club lobby, just above the Visitor's Guest Book.  In case it is hard to remove, you can handle the board but do not remove it from the lobby.  There is also a complete list of all the boats being hauled by crane on the bulletin board at the base of the stairway.  Please check that your boat is on the list.

Electronic copies (PDFs) of the yard layout, list of crane boats, and the list of the first boats to be hauled have been posted on the Club's website, in the Member's Section, under Miscellaneous.

FRIDAY HAULOUT
There will be a total of twenty (20) boats moved by the hydraulic trailers this year.  We will haul all 20 of the hydraulic trailer boats first on Friday.  The small crane will lift 7 of them at Coatsworth's Cut and stage them on the upper level of the Cut.  The large crane will lift the remaining 13 and stage them immediately behind (east) of the crane itself.  This should provide ample turning space for the trailers and will get all of these boats out of the way at once.  There will be significant movement of main yard and Coatsworth's Cut cradles throughout the day so all members storing in these areas must have their cradles assembled by Thursday October 16, as must all of the cradles for boats being moved by hydraulic trailer.

Owners of boats being moved by hydraulic trailer are to have a minimum of 6 6x6 wood blocks for their cradle OR equivalent steel feet welded to the cradle, together with levelling wood.  The Club has a supply of blocks but not necessarily enough to cover all eventualities.

The crews working on the trailers will be given drawings showing the staging area layouts because some boats must be placed bow to the trailer and others stern first to allow correct positioning in the rail area.

Once all of the hydraulic trailer boats have been hauled, the small crane will proceed to Blue Wall to complete its lifts, and the large crane will finish the first half of the main yard, after which it will move to its position for Saturday.

SATURDAY HAULOUT
On Saturday, the small crane will start at the Coatsworth Cut, then lift the rafts and the storage hut near the Sailing School (to make room for the sea wall work), and finish in the Drysail area.  The large crane will lift the balance of the main yard boats, the boats at the north end of Blue Wall, and the boats being stored near Bay Belle Point.

All the "regular" trailer boats (Crime Scene, Peace of Eight, Trimpus, Torrens, Orientis, Gingersnap and Japhet) will be hauled on Saturday to keep the tractor free to assist moving cradles on the Friday.

Both Friday and Saturday will be full days with both cranes finishing at roughly the same time - hopefully.  If all goes well, we should be done by 5 PM.

TIMING OF BOATS
For planning purposes, we  have always assumed 10 minutes to haul and place a boat in its cradle.  Over the last few years, time has crept up with a considerable impact to the day's length and the cost of the crane.  For this reason, we will be timing all of the boats hauled by crane this year.  The crews will ensure that the boats are placed vertically in their cradles on the marks specified by their owners, but we will not be using the crane to "fine-tune" boat positions when the necessary adjustments can be made using the pads and the muscle-power of the crews.  If you expect to need leveling wood, have it on hand.  If the nuts on your boat's cradle pads lack handles, ensure a wrench is on hand.

FIRST BOATS

FRIDAY OCTOBER 17, 2014 (9 AM START)

LARGE CRANE

MERMAID II, KATUNA, SATORI, TRINITY, DAY DREAM II

SMALL CRANE

GENTLE DREAMS, FANTASY, ISOGON, ZEPHYR (REID), FAT CAT

Notes:  Small crane boats will be hauled at Coatsworth's Cut.  The first three (3) boats are to be tied up on the wall at Coatsworth's Cut by 9 AM.  The next two are to be on the water.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 18, 2014 (8 AM START)

LARGE CRANE

TRIMPUS, GYPSY, D'MARIE, KAMINAK, MIKRON

Notes:  Large crane boats will be hauled in the main harbour, on White Wall, between Green Dock and Blue Wall.  The first boat is to be at the haulout dock and ready by 8 AM with the second boat standing by in the channel between Green Dock and Blue Wall.

SMALL CRANE

MADNESS, PEGASUS, SWEETWATERS, EMOYENI, EVELYN ROSE

Notes:  Small crane boats will be hauled at Coatsworth's Cut.  The first three (3) boats are to be tied up on the wall at Coatsworth's Cut by 8 AM.  The next two are to be on the water.

CRADLE LAYOUT

The cradles will be laid out on Thursday, October 9, starting at 9 AM.  This is a full-day activity.

The club will be closed to vehicle parking during this period as we will have a forklift and the club tractor moving cradles throughout the day.  All vehicles must be off-site by 9 AM.

This task is still open in the Job Jar and a number of people have already signed up there or contacted me directly.  The club provides lunch.  Typically, we are finished by 5 PM.  The Drysail area must also be clear of boats (except along the north wall at the club's property line) to allow the tractor/forklift access to this area.

Dock Ladies Team is recruiting!
- Carolyn Weckesser, Dock Ladies Coordinator 2014
______________________________________________________________________________________

It seems that despite my serious case of the 'denials', Haulout 2014 is soon to be upon us.

Time to recruit members for the Haulout "Dock Lady" crew!

The Dock Ladies team is one part of a large and detailed Haulout operation.  This team performs a crucial task of liaising with the skippers to ensure that the right boat is at the right haulout point at precisely the right moment.  Too soon, and the harbour gets clogged with traffic and the skippers are away from their work assignments for an unnecessary period of time jeopardizing the continued safety and efficiency of the operation.  Too late, and the crews and the cranes are left waiting wasting both money and resources.

Would you be willing to be on the Dock Lady crew for Haulout?  I'd love to have you on the team.  Please let me know if you are available and willing to help "on the docks" this Fall.

No offence to the gents, but this team has traditionally been crewed by our women members as many of the men are assigned to the heavily physical tasks...hence the name "Dock Lady".  However if you find yourself unable to contribute in either the crane or rail yard, we'd love to have you join our team!

Anyone interested in joining our team, please contact me at ABYCDockLadies@gmail.com for additional details.  No technical skills are needed, just enthusiasm!
