SPECTACULAR WEEKEND TO BE ON A BOAT!

Although last weekend's main sailing event was the ABYC Challenge Race, it was also ideal for just being around boats.  The wind could have been a little bit stronger but we didn't hear too many complaints.

The Dinghy Area needs to be cleared by this Friday Evening October 3rd to allow for cradle layout and assembly.

Please either take your boat home or move it to Bay Belle Point.  I will move some of the boats on my way home from work and can use some help.

As a "Start" for the Harbour Wall Repair project this fall it would be advantageous to clear the Sailing School area of all boats, boat racks and boat dollies to give lots of work room for people, materials and machines to get busy early on this project right after Haulout.  We need about 30 people to carry dinghies to a safe storage area and dismantle and/or just move dinghy racks to a safe storage location nearby.

There are also other picnic areas of the club to be dismantled and stored for safekeeping and free up space for winter boat storage.  Both Bay Belle Point tent and Green dock Patio could use about 20 more volunteers to help stow and clear these areas.

Introducing ABYC's very own Pumpkin Carving Party - Wednesday, 22 October

Wouldn't it be fun to see the twinkling eyes of junior members as they proudly work on their carving creations?

What about witnessing senior members channeling their inner pumpkin prowess as they execute a strategic plan to create the perfect Jack O'Lantern?

Get your carving gear ready and plan to show-up on 22 October. We'll provide the pumpkins and YOU provide the creativity.  All the fun starts at 7pm.  No prior carving experience necessary.  Open to all ages.

Fun Fact: "The phrase "jack o'lantern" has its roots in Irish folklore. According to legend, "Stingy  Jack" was a drunken miser who made a couple of bad bets with the Devil during his life. One of the bets resulted in the Devil promising never to send old Jack to Hell. As it turned out, Jack wasn't let into Heaven, and the Devil kept his promise. Jack was doomed to wander Earth for eternity with only his lantern - a large carved turnip, to light his way. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as "Jack of the Lantern," and then, simply Jack O'Lantern."

This is the last Race Report of the season, alas, as the final ABYC race will be the Archie Walker on Saturday.  Don't miss it - memories of it will have to keep you warm all winter!

The LORC season finished up with an unusual race. The Boswell Trophy Race took place in almost no wind on a beautiful warm and sunny Sunday. The course was set to have "Virtual Marks"; that is, waypoints entered into a GPS that boats would sail to and "round".  As it turned out, with almost no wind, the course was shortened at the first "mark" and boats were to call in their finish times.  I must admit, some of the times reported look a little fishy to me.

Three boats from ABYC entered this experimental race.  Larry Harrison in Merlin M2, Adam Rees in Trax and Murray Gainer's Lively.  In speaking to Mike Milner, he would like feedback, so I would suggest to the participants that they send comments to Mike.

Fall CORK was held last weekend as well . Competing in the Lasers for ABYC were Jeff DeJean and Stewart Bott. Let's just say that conditions did not favour heavier competitors.  Quinten Beelik represented ABYC in the Radials, and Linor Berezin and Katherine McEwen placed FIRST in the 29er class. Congratulations to Linor and Katherine!

Finally, congratulations also to Mike Hren, who competed two weeks ago at the Etchells North Americans in Chicago. The boat Mike sailed on placed FOURTH.  Well done.

So, it's a wrap for the 2014 season, I am sad to say.

Editors' Note:  Once again we owe Wendy a great big THANKS for all her Race Reports throughout the season.  We know she has other things to do in her life and we appreciate her taking the time to get these reports to us every Tuesday.

BLACK SWAN/DOUBLE TIME CHALLENGE

The down side is the wind was light, but  on the upside, the water was flat - always a plus on the Sarah Ashbridge.  It was a very peasant day on the race course with the guys; unusual  since, for reasons I have yet to fathom, the Committee Boat is usually heavily slanted on the estrogen side.

Thanks very much to Rick Humphrey (RO), Neil Payne, Jamie Donaldson, Joe Konecny and Brian Chapman for a job well done.

_______________________________________

This past weekend, the ABYC Junior Race Team (and extended family) all performed extremely well at Fall Cork in Kingston.  The regatta started off with very light winds, and though a thermal came in around 1 pm on Saturday, the wind remained shifty and it was a tricky day of sailing.  Sunday was much of the same, with gustier winds and choppier water.  Over the course of both days, our six Optimist sailors adapted quickly to the difficult conditions.

Oliver van Rossem picked up on the frequent shifts and played them well.  He went on to finish in 9th place in the 40 boat fleet; on the other course his grandfather Joe won the Laser Masters class and his dad Chris was 2nd overall in the Laser Masters class, a remarkable three generations racing in the same weekend.

Hunter Dejean shone in terms of her starts, where she consistently won either the boat or the pin, and did very well off the line, landing herself 20th place overall.  In Sunday's patchy conditions, Danny Assimakopoulos did an excellent job of figuring out where the wind was, and incorporated that into his race plan.  He paid attention to the areas of low pressure and made sure to avoid them, eventually finishing in 36th.  Kate Evans did a fantastic job on each downwind, gaining boats because of her great boat control and steady positioning.  She ended up 32nd overall.  Annabel Gravely had several great races and improved consistently over the two days.  She gained a better understanding of the regular wind shifts and finished in 28th.  Paul Wortmann continued to work on his upwind sailing and became more consistent in his performance and finishes throughout the regatta.  He went on to end the weekend with a 34th place finish.

Quinten Beelik represented the ABYC Senior Race Team, placing 27th of 40 Laser Radials, a  superb result as he just moved out of the Optimist and up to the Laser Radial class mid-season.  ABYC Sailing School Head Instructor Stewart Bott and Sailing School Director Jeff Dejean also competed in the Laser Standard rig.

Saving the best results for last, ABYC instructors Linor Berezin and Katherine McEwen won the 29er class in a tightly contested series which included lead changes throughout the 2nd day of racing.

Training will continue for the race teams for a couple of weeks after haulout, weather permitting.

Congratulations to our sailors and instructors on their performance.

Dock Ladies Team is recruiting!
- Carolyn Weckesser, Dock Ladies Coordinator 2014
________________________________________________________________________

It seems that despite my serious case of the 'denials', Haulout 2014 is soon to be upon us.

Time to recruit members for the Haulout "Dock Lady" crew!

The Dock Ladies team is one part of a large and detailed Haulout operation.  This team performs a crucial task of liaising with the skippers to ensure that the right boat is at the right haulout point at precisely the right moment.  Too soon, and the harbour gets clogged with traffic and the skippers are away from their work assignments for an unnecessary period of time jeopardizing the continued safety and efficiency of the operation.  Too late, and the crews and the cranes are left waiting wasting both money and resources.

Would you be willing to be on the Dock Lady crew for Haulout?  I'd love to have you on the team.  Please let me know if you are available and willing to help "on the docks" this Fall.

No offence to the gents, but this team has traditionally been crewed by our women members as many of the men are assigned to the heavily physical tasks...hence the name "Dock Lady".  However if you find yourself unable to contribute in either the crane or rail yard, we'd love to have you join our team!

Anyone interested in joining our team, please contact me at [email protected] for additional details.  No technical skills are needed, just enthusiasm!

YARD LAYOUT AND LIST OF BOATS

A hard copy of the yard layout has been posted on a foam board in the Club lobby, just above the Visitor's Guest Book.  In case it is hard to remove, you can handle the board but do not remove it from the lobby.  There is also a complete list of all the boats being hauled by crane on the bulletin board at the base of the stairway.  Please check that your boat is on the list.

Electronic copies (PDFs) of the yard layout, list of crane boats, and the list of the first boats to be hauled have been posted on the Club's website, in the Member's Section, under Miscellaneous.

FRIDAY HAULOUT
There will be a total of twenty (20) boats moved by the hydraulic trailers this year.  We will haul all 20 of the hydraulic trailer boats first on Friday.  The small crane will lift 7 of them at Coatsworth's Cut and stage them on the upper level of the Cut.  The large crane will lift the remaining 13 and stage them immediately behind (east) of the crane itself.  This should provide ample turning space for the trailers and will get all of these boats out of the way at once.  There will be significant movement of main yard and Coatsworth's Cut cradles throughout the day so all members storing in these areas must have their cradles assembled by Thursday October 16, as must all of the cradles for boats being moved by hydraulic trailer.

Owners of boats being moved by hydraulic trailer are to have a minimum of 6 6x6 wood blocks for their cradle OR equivalent steel feet welded to the cradle, together with levelling wood.  The Club has a supply of blocks but not necessarily enough to cover all eventualities.

The crews working on the trailers will be given drawings showing the staging area layouts because some boats must be placed bow to the trailer and others stern first to allow correct positioning in the rail area.

Once all of the hydraulic trailer boats have been hauled, the small crane will proceed to Blue Wall to complete its lifts, and the large crane will finish the first half of the main yard, after which it will move to its position for Saturday.

SATURDAY HAULOUT
On Saturday, the small crane will start at the Coatsworth Cut, then lift the rafts and the storage hut near the Sailing School (to make room for the sea wall work), and finish in the Drysail area.  The large crane will lift the balance of the main yard boats, the boats at the north end of Blue Wall, and the boats being stored near Bay Belle Point.

All the "regular" trailer boats (Crime Scene, Peace of Eight, Trimpus, Torrens, Orientis, Gingersnap and Japhet) will be hauled on Saturday to keep the tractor free to assist moving cradles on the Friday.

Both Friday and Saturday will be full days with both cranes finishing at roughly the same time - hopefully.  If all goes well, we should be done by 5 PM.

TIMING OF BOATS
For planning purposes, we  have always assumed 10 minutes to haul and place a boat in its cradle.  Over the last few years, time has crept up with a considerable impact to the day's length and the cost of the crane.  For this reason, we will be timing all of the boats hauled by crane this year.  The crews will ensure that the boats are placed vertically in their cradles on the marks specified by their owners, but we will not be using the crane to "fine-tune" boat positions when the necessary adjustments can be made using the pads and the muscle-power of the crews.  If you expect to need leveling wood, have it on hand.  If the nuts on your boat's cradle pads lack handles, ensure a wrench is on hand.

YARD MARKING AND CRADLE LAYOUT

The yard will be marked with the cradle locations on Saturday, October 4, starting at 9 AM.  The entire main parking lot and the lower level of Blue Wall must be clear of all vehicles by that time, and the yard will be closed to cars until approximately noon.  This task is closed in the Job Jar because I have the team that will perform the marking.

The cradles will be laid out on Thursday, October 9, starting at 9 AM.  This is a full-day activity.  The club will be closed to vehicle parking during this period as we will have a forklift and the club tractor moving cradles throughout the day.  All vehicles must be off-site by 9 AM.  This task is still open in the Job Jar and a number of people have already signed up there or contacted me directly.  The club provides lunch.  Typically, we are finished by 5 PM.  The Drysail area must also be clear of boats (except along the north wall at the club's property line) to allow the tractor/forklift access to this area.
