September General Meeting
_____________________________________________________________________________________

A well attended General Meeting was held on Monday evening.  Reports from all Board Members informed us on the current state of our club and included the introduction of several new members who have joined in the past few weeks.  The Board Members' reports also covered many important issues headed our way such as our ongoing Property Tax dispute, upcoming repairs to our seawalls and related financing alternatives as well as happier items such as racing and cruising activities.  Generally speaking, the club is in very good financial condition and we should be able to meet the upcoming challenges with minimal effect on our members.

The main event of the night was the election of 3 Board Members for the positions of Rear Commodore (Paul Brennan), VC-Finance (Axel Noriega) and VC-Marine Services (Erik Dullerud).  Bruce Morrison, Acting VC-Marine should know that we are grateful for his agreeing to take on the job mid-term as well as for the work he did while in that Board position.

In addition to the elections, it was announced that after nearly 5 years as Chairs of the Entertainment Committee, Celia Lum and Howard Franklin are stepping down.  The new chairs will be Debbie Dockray and Don Sturgeon.  It was also announced that we need new Cruising Captains for the 2015 season.

Inter-Club Cooperation
_______________________________________

A fine example of inter-club cooperation was viewed by many last Saturday as the high winds contributed to a sailboat drifting into the shallow area just outside Coatsworth's Cut.  Boats from TH&SC and ABYC (Jack Cameron) went into action and successfully pulled the vessel to safety.

Good work everyone!

The Chilly Whitby Cruise of Sept 20-21.
_____________________________________________________________________________________

The forecast was not good and the distance daunting this late in the season but the nine boats and crews mastered the 25 to 30 knot gusts and 6 to 8 foot waves with skill and perseverance to the far haven of Whitby on the Saturday and on the return to A.B.Y.C. on the Sunday.  A slightly larger contingent from W.Y.C. also made the exchange, passing in the froth of Frenchman's Bay.

But the rewards were the many.  Tantalizing appetisers, hot homemade chili and fixings and homemade desserts shared with fun and camaraderie and epic stories of similar challenges of the past.  Speaking of the past, three cruisers re-met after an approximate 15 year absence for a warm exchange of family news and memories.

Perhaps a closer destination would be a better arrangement for future late date cruises but we all enjoyed our time together.  Follow the link to the pics and add your own.

Gentle Nudge - Fall is here (#shesback)
- Sue Hamilton, Work Party Coordinator
________________________________________________________________________

Now that the summer days are waning, I am thinking nostalgically about the Saturday work parties, as I'm sure you all are too.  Am I right?  If not, this message is a just a gentle nudge that fall is here and that Saturday, November 1 is our All Day Fall Work Party.  I will be advertising in future editions of  Ship to Shore the list of jobs needing to be done to tidy up the club and grounds in preparation for winter.  #Woohoo #Workparties!

Q. Who is the Duffy that Duffy's Lounge is named for?  There's a little sign on the bar that says it's a "tradition" that one must remove his or her hat when entering or else be required to buy drinks for everyone there.  When did this tradition start?  What's the point?     - from "An Avid Crew Member"

A. According to Past Commodore Rick Humphrey, the late Bill Duffy was a Senior Member who contributed greatly to the Club during the years, but spent a lot of time occupying a specific seat in the   "Sailor's Lounge" (as it was known back then).  It is thus possible under certain mysterious conditions to become famous, as Bill did, by regular visits to a room in a bar - Bill was known for his presence in the Lounge, and the Lounge came to be known for Bill's presence in it.  There are long-time Life and Senior Members in the Club who can relate stories about Bill - ask one of them the next time you're in the Lounge.

The origin of the tradition of removing one's hat in Duffy's isn't quite so clear.  Rick suggests it could have arisen out of respect for the picture of the Queen that hangs there, but also mentions that it probably had its source in the military (in which many ABYC members served during the world wars), independent of images of the Sovereign.  It is a service tradition to take off one's headdress in a mess hall, where there would usually be a picture of the Monarch, but on a Military Base there are such pictures in many offices where hat removal is not prescribed.  By extension, hats might also be removed in a canteen or bar, though, again, probably not because of a photograph.  As Al Stapleton puts it, it's a matter of etiquette: would you wear your hat at the family dinner table?  The custom of buying drinks for all present for a hat breach was apparently designed to enforce the tradition and to keep it from waning, but we haven't turned up any military orders to that effect.  Incidentally, the military tradition calls for only men who are "not on official business" to remove their hats in the mess; women (and men on official business) may continue to wear theirs.  Thus, a woman might, with good reason, claim that the restriction in Duffy's shouldn't apply to her.

Archives Committee seeking members
- Geoff Huck, Chair

The Archives Committee is seeking several additional members.  Most importantly, Archives needs (1) an Internal Communications person who will record and disseminate information to members of the Committee, and (2) a Computer-savvy Person who will be in charge of scanning paper documents and photos for electronic archiving.  If you want to accumulate Job Jar hours but would prefer not to work outside during the colder months, volunteering on the Archives is an excellent way to do so.

YARD LAYOUT AND LIST OF BOATS

A hard copy of the yard layout has been posted on a foam board in the Club lobby, just above the Visitor's Guest Book.  In case it is hard to remove, you can handle the board but do not remove it from the lobby.  There is also a complete list of all the boats being hauled by crane on the bulletin board at the base of the stairway.  Please check that your boat is on the list.

Electronic copies (PDFs) of the yard layout, list of crane boats, and the list of the first boats to be hauled will be posted on the Club website by the end of this week.

FRIDAY HAULOUT
There will be a total of twenty (20) boats moved by the hydraulic trailers this year.  We will haul all 20 of the hydraulic trailer boats first on Friday.  The small crane will lift 7 of them at Coatsworth's Cut and stage them on the upper level of the Cut.  The large crane will lift the remaining 13 and stage them immediately behind (east) of the crane itself.  This should provide ample turning space for the trailers and will get all of these boats out of the way at once.  There will be significant movement of main yard and Coatsworth's Cut cradles throughout the day so all members storing in these areas must have their cradles assembled by Thursday October 16, as must all of the cradles for boats being moved by hydraulic trailer.

Owners of boats being moved by hydraulic trailer are to have a minimum of 6 6x6 wood blocks for their cradle OR equivalent steel feet welded to the cradle, together with levelling wood.  The Club has a supply of blocks but not necessarily enough to cover all eventualities.

The crews working on the trailers will be given drawings showing the staging area layouts because some boats must be placed bow to the trailer and others stern first to allow correct positioning in the rail area.

Once all of the hydraulic trailer boats have been hauled, the small crane will proceed to Blue Wall to complete its lifts, and the large crane will finish the first half of the main yard, after which it will move to its position for Saturday.

SATURDAY HAULOUT
On Saturday, the small crane will start at the Coatsworth Cut, then lift the rafts and the storage hut near the Sailing School (to make room for the sea wall work), and finish in the Drysail area.  The large crane will lift the balance of the main yard boats, the boats at the north end of Blue Wall, and the boats being stored near Bay Belle Point.

All the "regular" trailer boats (Crime Scene, Peace of Eight, Trimpus, Torrens, Orientis, Gingersnap and Japhet) will be hauled on Saturday to keep the tractor free to assist moving cradles on the Friday.

Both Friday and Saturday will be full days with both cranes finishing at roughly the same time - hopefully.  If all goes well, we should be done by 5 PM.

TIMING OF BOATS
For planning purposes, we  have always assumed 10 minutes to haul and place a boat in its cradle.  Over the last few years, time has crept up with a considerable impact to the day's length and the cost of the crane.  For this reason, we will be timing all of the boats hauled by crane this year.  The crews will ensure that the boats are placed vertically in their cradles on the marks specified by their owners, but we will not be using the crane to "fine-tune" boat positions when the necessary adjustments can be made using the pads and the muscle-power of the crews.  If you expect to need leveling wood, have it on hand.  If the nuts on your boat's cradle pads lack handles, ensure a wrench is on hand.

YARD MARKING AND CRADLE LAYOUT

The yard will be marked with the cradle locations on Saturday, October 4, starting at 9 AM.  The entire main parking lot and the lower level of Blue Wall must be clear of all vehicles by that time, and the yard will be closed to cars until approximately noon.  This task is closed in the Job Jar because I have the team that will perform the marking.

The cradles will be laid out on Thursday, October 9, starting at 9 AM.  This is a full-day activity.  The club will be closed to vehicle parking during this period as we will have a forklift and the club tractor moving cradles throughout the day.  All vehicles must be off-site by 9 AM.  This task is still open in the Job Jar and a number of people have already signed up there or contacted me directly.  The club provides lunch.  Typically, we are finished by 5 PM.  The Drysail area must also be clear of boats (except along the north wall at the club's property line) to allow the tractor/forklift access to this area.

SUMMERVILLE MEMORIAL RACE

It was rockin' and rollin' out there, but a fun day for a race.  We had 19 boats in the Summerville on Saturday and thanks to the RC volunteers who made it happen:

Paul Brennan (RO), Max Smith, Deepak Mathur, Allison Brannen and Helen Phillips from HYC, who has helped us out on numerous occasions when I couldn't find enough help in-house.

Two more events left - the Black Swan /Double Time Challenge on the 27th and the Archie Walker on Oct. 4.  I've got the people I need for the Challenge, but could use 1 more for the Archie.

Please let me know if you can help.

THE SECOND ANNUAL
ELIZABETH KIMBALL
MEMORIAL ARTS AND CRAFTS SHOW

Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club
Sunday, November 2, 2014
1:00 to 4:00

The artistic talents of many of our fellow Club Members are often talked of but rarely put on proper display.  To again showcase the quality and range of artistic expression among our modest and skilled members there will be an afternoon showing of painting, photography and crafts (quilts, dolls, wood work, etc.), selected and submitted by the artist, at "Gallery ABYC".  All Club Members are invited to attend this event.

To the Artists: This will be a non-adjudicated event (there will be no First in Class Awards) open to Club Members and guests who may submit one or two pieces.  While efforts will be made to properly display the art, the provision of your own easel or display device will ensure a better showing of your work.  Other members with a spare easel or two are asked to bring them to the Show.

Artists are asked to display their art prior to 12:30.

Please e-mail or inform Terry Fagan of your participation.

Halloween

How to prepare for ABYC's Famous Halloween Party

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Halloween is a wonderful time that stirs up the imaginations of young and old alike.  Costume ideas are no doubt on people's minds, as the spooky night nears.

"Here are some tips to help you choose a Halloween Costume:"

1. Read the fine print - Know exactly what costume pieces and accessories you're getting before buying.

2. Predict the weather - Before you buy, think about what the weather may be like in October.

3. Know the right size - Make sure the costume you pick is comfortable and allows you to move with ease.

4. Buy early - Don't wait until the last minute to purchase a Halloween costume, especially if you're ordering online.

5. Try it on - Take the costume out of the bag well before the Halloween Party, just in case it doesn't fit. Steam or iron the costume before wearing it.

6. To save money, use makeup - Short on cash? Change your face with makeup to help the same costume look dramatically different if attending multiple Halloween events.

7. Accessorize to add variety - Add gloves or a hat to help make the same costume look different from one night to the next.

8. Practice in advance - Buy enough makeup to do it twice -- and leave enough time to get ready. Do a practice run with your makeup a day or two, or even a weekend before the Halloween event.

9. Make costumes safe - Some costumes come with masks or hats. If the eye slits of a mask are too small to see out of, make them a little bigger by cutting them open. Then use makeup to blend in the color of the mask with your skin.

10. Know your pet - Dressing up your pet for Halloween? Understand that some pets just don't like to wear a costume. Stick to something that has a cape if your pet isn't thrilled about wearing a costume."

Halloween Costume ideas are as endless and as diverse as the people who wear them.
