ABYC FALL BELL BUOY RACES

Saturday September 20, 2014

 ___________________________________________

This is one of your last chances to race your boat for the 2014 season.  The nature of this race will allow you to pull together and showcase all the racing knowledge and experience you have developed throughout this year's sailing season

The ABYC Offshore race, formerly scheduled as the Fall Bell Buoy Race is now combined with our club's LORC Donald Summerville Memorial Race.

The boats normally racing in the LORC series in the IRC divisions along with our own PHRF spinnaker boats will be sailing on one course and ABYC Whitesail boats will be sailing on a different course.  We will be using marks of opportunity to the east of ABYC.

The Sailing Instructions are athttp://abyc.on.ca/racing/regattas/donald-summerville-memorial-race/   Per the sailing instructions, the committee boat will signal the courses to be sailed on the morning of the race depending on conditions.

Even though this is a club race all entrants must register for the race at:  www.lorc.org.

The entry fee for ABYC members is a nominal $2.00.  We need to do the ABYC entries through LORC for scoring purposes.

Flags will be presented at this year's Club Racing Awards night.

____________________________________________________________

The cradles for the crane haulout will be laid out on Thursday, October 9.  This is an all-day event starting at 9 AM and usually ending around 3 PM.  As in years past, we will need volunteers for this work.  It counts as a work party project.  Sign-up is possible via the Job Jar or by e-mailing me.  If you can't make the full-day, half a day is appreciated.  The club will provide lunch and beverages.   Hard hats and safety boots are required.

Nomination Committee....Now is the time!

The Fall AGM and the Elections are scheduled for next week, I hope to see most of you there.  I am thrilled to announce that all 3 current board members up for election this term have confirmed that they are running again for their respective postions.  Included in this submission is a brief note from each incumbant.  I am again reaching out to our membership; do you have any interest in running for a board position?  If you have considered sitting on the board, your Nomination Committee is keen to speak with you.

At the AGM, the membership will be asked a final time if they would like to run for a posted position; surprises are always welcome.  Please be prepared to introduce yourself and say a few words to the membership present.

Now...a few words from those seeking re-election on September 22nd.....

Rear Commodore:  Incumbent Paul Brennan

Dear fellow members,

This is my 20th year as a member at ABYC.  Since joining, I've primarily contributed in the Crane Yard, with 5 years as chair, and in the Sailing Committee, as scorer/registrar then Chair, and as a member of the Race Committee.  Moving into the role of Rear Commodore in the spring of 2012 was certainly an eye-opening experience.  It showed me the amount of work that everyone, from Wheelbarrow Operator to Commodore, does to keep our club going and to ensure a strong future.

We're not perfect at ABYC, but we do try to continuously improve, and I think we do a pretty good job at it.  I believe that the on-the-water operations have made steady improvements over the last 2 years, but there are always more opportunities.

If you'll have me, I'm willing to sign up for another two years.  You can expect:

- a continued focus on our junior program (the future of our sport!) and on regattas (which bring fun, food and beverage dollars, and an opportunity for others to see what a great club we have)

- support of innovation and careful growth in all the on-the-water programs

- a philosophy of careful planning for and spending of both dollars and volunteer hours in all club programs, as we move into a challenging few years of major repairs

- a willingness to try new things (if we want to keep things the same here, we have to keep improving, because costs aren't going down)

I thank all the members for making this a great club, and in particular, the Committee Chairs and the Board for advising and supporting me as Rear Commodore.

Most respectfully...Paul Brennan

Vice Commodore - Finance: Incumbent Axel Noriega

Hello to all ABYC members!

I have served as your Vice-Commodore, Financial Services for the past 2 years.  We (my wife, Elise; son, Aubrey and daughter, Zoe) had just recently joined ABYC in Aug of 2012, when I became interested in this role and serving on the board.  I thought that this role would be the right fit for both the Club and myself, allowing me to contribute immediately, given my education (engineering and MBA degrees) and past professional and volunteer (on various boards) experiences.

We have become avid sailors having gone through a steep learning curve in our first two years, while enjoying the camaraderie that the club members have provided.  Similarly I have gone through a steep learning curve regarding how the Club works, its financial systems, its needs, its wants and its resourses.  By speaking with my predecessors and advisors, I believe that the first two years are mostly about learning and preparing for the following two years.

This role is responsible for the finances of the club.  It is a critical role on the board that I take very seriously as we continuously face business and financial challenges that could affect our livelihood as a club.  In the past two years, I have gained a good understanding of our finances, our challenges, our systems, processes and workings of the club.  I have been lucky enough to have a stable and committed Finance Committee.  I am thankful for their support.

We, the Finance Committee and the Board, have accomplished many of our goals, but we continue to be challenged.  I remain committed to doing my best to deal with the day-to-day and larger challenges, to maintain controls in place to ensure transparency and proper usage of our financial resources, and developing a structure that will help us achieve our short and long plans.

The largest challenge that we will face in the next two years are the efforts that we must endeavour to repair our aging infrastructure.  I ask for your support to continue contributing in this role, as your Vice Commodore - Financial services, for the next two years, allowing me to offer my commitment to maintain a level of continuity and stability with the good work that this volunteer board seeks to accomplish over the few years.

Thank you and Ilook forward to serving...Axel Noriega

Vice Commodore - Marine Services:  Incumbent Bruce Morrison

Dear ABYC members, I would like to have my name stand as a candidate for the position of Vice-Commodore - Marine Services.

I joined ABYC in 1982 when I bought the T-Bird Zest II then renamed her to SCREECHER.  Over the past 32 years my work hours have primarily been in the rail yard. For the previous 7 years I was Rail Chair.

The position of Vice-Commodore - Marine Services is responsible for the grounds and harbour and everything outside of the clubhouse and sailing school buildings.  This role is requires a person who understands the intricacies and interactions of the various maintenance and setup process and practices that the membership under take to make this club function smoothly.  In a nutshell, you have to understand how things get done around here.  The most important and rewarding part of this job is working with the dedicated people that make what gets done around here happen.  For the last 15 months I have been serving as acting Vice-Commodore - Marine Services.  Over this time I have gained a detailed understanding of the people and workings of the club and have done my best to deal with the challenges presented by an aging infrastructure and a difficult winter.

Everyone recognizes that most tasks can be done given enough money, time and resources.  If re-elected, I will endeavour to manage the membership's money to maximize the effectiveness of the resources (Manpower) to maintain and improve the club's facilities for the enjoyment of all.

Respectfully yours...Bruce Morrison

Crane Haulout - Priority of Storage
______________________________________________________________________________________

As mentioned in my last S2S notice, space will be tight in the yard this year, and likely to increase going forward as more big boats are brought into the club.  One other contributing factor likely to affect the yard for the next couple of years will be the sea wall repairs, which will require areas where we normally store boats to be kept clear to allow the repairs to proceed.  To address both of these scenarios - in other words to address both long-term and short-term storage trends, the Board is considering a new policy for seniority.  In immediate terms, for boats hauled and stored by crane, this policy means that priority will be given to yard storage to owners whose boats stored with us in previous years, and on the basis of seniority.  It is thought that this is the fairest way to address situations when we don't have enough space to store all the boats.  Naturally, every effort will be made to store all boats that have requested storage, and notification will be given no later than the second week in September to any boats that we cannot accommodate.  This date will be moved forward once the sea wall repairs start along Blue Wall and the Coatsworth Cut.

Feedback and suggestions from all members are both requested and will be appreciated.

Hello from an old Friend

As ABYC members were complaining about the cooler weather that we suddenly experienced this past week, we received a message from former ABYC Bosun, Mike Kovacs who moved to Calgary a few weeks ago.  Mike asked us to say hello to all his friends and to tell you that he and his family have settled in nicely.  He also sent a photograph of the view from their balcony last week:

Somewhere between leaving my computer and arriving at S2S's, the cyber imp  managed to scramble last week's article and things got left out or lost in translation.  Being the total luddite that I am, it's all a mystery to me, so let's try this again.

There are 3 races left  in the season.  At this point, I don't have the Race Committee necessary to cover them and  I'm having a really hard time finding people to help.  It's frustrating, to say the least, to finish out the season this way, so I'm hoping some of you will step up so we can end on a high note.  If not, I'm fresh out of options.

Here's what I need:

Sat., Sept. 20   SUMMERVILLE MEMORIAL RACE (LORC)

This is a distance race and the most urgent need is for the start.  I need 2 or 3 people to help.  If it will sweeten the pot a little, you needn't hang around for the finish - a couple of us can handle that.  If you want to commit to both the start and finish, so much the better, but it's not a must.

Sat., Sept. 27   Black Swan/Double Time Challenge

This is an around-the-marks race, like our week night races.
I  need  2 or 3 people

Sat., Oct. 4  Archie Walker Race

This is a bell buoy type race and the last of the season.
I need  3 or 4 people, including someone comfortable with timing.

Please let me know ASAP if you can help with  any of these events.

Saturday dawned cold and rainy, but 12 intrepid members headed out on their Lasers and Laser Radials to do battle in the 50th running of the Hansen Dinghy Regatta.

Originally run in the club's Albacores, it has been taken over by the club's dinghy racers, although there are some ABYC owned Lasers up for grabs.  Shawn Gershman brought his boat back for the day from RCYC and junior race team member Adam Gillies also joined the "masters" sailors. The wind picked up and was the typical shifty and gusty northwesterly by the time racing began.  It kept our race committee chaired by Gordon Burt with assistance from Eli Gershman, Paul-Angus Bark and Tim Hill on their toes, resetting the course after every race.

There were capsizes, near capsizes and wild shifts and gusts adding to the mayhem.  Mercifully, although the air was very chilly, the water was warm.  Kevin Armstrong, Giles Osborne, Adam Gillies and Grant Dietrich each won a race, so competition was keen.  Final standings saw Jeff DeJean third overall with 8 points, tied with second place Grant Dietrich who beat out Jeff on the tiebreaker, and the victor was first time Hansen winner Giles Osborne with 6 points.

Following the races, we headed in to the clubhouse for some hot soup and refreshing beverages, and compared bruises.  Gord Burt presented the Hansen Trophy to Giles during thunderous applause from the assembled group.

Many thanks to Tim Hill for the photos which can be found at:https://www.flickr.com/photos/127022604@N03/sets/72157647541027146/.

Don't forget to sign up for the Summerville.  So far the forecast for Saturday looks great!  Visit www.lorc.org to register.  Cost to ABYC members is a whopping $2.
