Crane Haulout - Priority of Storage
______________________________________________________________________________________

As mentioned in my last S2S notice, space will be tight in the yard this year, and likely to increase going forward as more big boats are brought into the club.  One other contributing factor likely to affect the yard for the next couple of years will be the sea wall repairs, which will require areas where we normally store boats to be kept clear to allow the repairs to proceed.  To address both of these scenarios - in other words to address both long-term and short-term storage trends, the Board is considering a new policy for seniority.  In immediate terms, for boats hauled and stored by crane, this policy means that priority will be given to yard storage to owners whose boats stored with us in previous years, and on the basis of seniority.  It is thought that this is the fairest way to address situations when we don't have enough space to store all the boats.  Naturally, every effort will be made to store all boats that have requested storage, and notification will be given no later than the second week in September to any boats that we cannot accommodate.  This date will be moved forward once the sea wall repairs start along Blue Wall and the Coatsworth Cut.

Feedback and suggestions from all members are both requested and will be appreciated.

Mast Take Down Service
______________________________________________________________________________________

In light of the decision not to include a Mast-Up option during this fall's Haulout, ABYC members might be interested to know that there are services which will unstep your mast for you if you would prefer not to do it yourself.  Bob Wilson <mailto:bwilson@somervilleauto.com> is currently taking orders for a service provided by Jim Speir at a cost of $250.00.

Please e-mail Bob as early as possible to reserve a spot on Jim's list.

The cradles for the crane haulout will be laid out on Thursday October 9.  This is an all-day event starting at 9 AM and usually ending around 3 PM.  As in years past, we will need volunteers for this work.  It counts as a work party project.  Sign-up is possible via the Job Jar or by e-mailing me.  If you can't make the full-day, half a day is appreciated.  The club will provide lunch and beverages.   Hard hats and safety boots are required.

ABYC FALL BELL BUOY RACE

DONALD SUMMERVILLE MEMORIAL RACE

Saturday September 20, 2014

This is one of your last chances to race your boat for the 2014 season.  The nature of this race will allow you to pull together and showcase all the racing knowledge and experience you have developed throughout this year's sailing season

The ABYC Offshore race, formerly scheduled as the Fall Bell Buoy Race is now combined with our club's LORC Donald Summerville Memorial RaceWe used to have in the Club's Schedule of Events; the Fall Bell Buoy, the Archie Walker, AND the Summerville.  Very few members of the ABYC Fleet would sail all three, and rather than running three lightly attended races, the Sailing Committee decided to combine two to provide more competition (and give our Race Committee a well-deserved break).

The boats normally racing in the LORC series in the IRC divisions along with our own PHRF spinnaker boats will be sailing on one course.  Our whitesail boats will be sailing on a different course.  We have concluded that the future of the race is a medium-distance point-to-point race with a course of up to 30 miles or so for the larger boats and 15 miles or so for the whitesail fleet.  This configuration proved to be successful in LYRA.  We will be using marks of opportunity to the east of ABYC.

The Sailing Instructions are athttp://abyc.on.ca/racing/regattas/donald-summerville-memorial-race/.  Per the sailing instructions, the committee boat will signal the courses to be sailed on the morning of the race depending on conditions.  A downwind spinnaker start may be experienced.

Even though this is a club race, we do require all entrants to register for the race at:  www.lorc.org.

The entry fee for ABYC members is a nominal $2.00.  We need to do the ABYC entries through LORC for scoring purposes.

Flags will be presented at this year's Club Racing Awards night.

The last of the LORC "Open" Regattas was on Saturday, and there was a good turnout of ABYC boats to defend out "Club Championship" title.  The winds were fickle, to say the least, with huge holes and massive (160 degrees) wind shifts, just to keep us all on our toes.  Alas, the huge turnout of QCYC boats in the "No Flying Sails" divisions (18 boats!) gave the trophy back to QCYC despite the best efforts of Martin Gibb in Consort and Tim Hill and the crew of Short Bus defending ABYC's honour by finishing second and third respectively in the NFS 2 fleet.

Other ABYC racers also fared very well, with Murray Gainer's Lively 6th in the IRC 1 Fleet and Larry Harrison's Merlin M2 placed 10th.  In IRC 2; Claum Semple and the crew of Sona placed second, with Starwatch sailed by the Flynn family and friends, fourth in IRC 2.

In the J80 Fleet, Bart Smit's crew aboard Nautical Symphony again placed first overall.  The T-bird fleet was won by Looney Tunes with Paul-Angus Bark's Who Knows second and Joe Konecny and the crew of Desperado third.  New member Gualtiero Guadagni with his daughter sailed Full On into fourth place. Full results are at http://www.lorc.org/Results2014/2014_Results.htm.

It is hard to believe that the season is drawing to a close.  Be sure not to miss the Hanson on Saturday, Sept. 13 (come out and cheer if you don't want to go out and sail a Laser) and sign up for the Summerville on Sept. 20 (cost: $2 plus HST) to enjoy some of the best sailing of the season.

QCYC Open

Rain, a bit of sun, fouled props, water logged lunches, boats changing divisions at the very last minute, OCS's all over the place,  BIZARRE wind patterns, a finish mark that started on our starboard side and ended up on our port side because the Sarah was swinging so much.  Boats screaming upwind to what should have been on a downwind finish - we had it all; just another day on Race Committee.  It was a "challenging" day on many levels, but we got 3 races in and the 40+ competitors on Bravo course seemed happy with that.  Many thanks to the intrepid souls who, fueled by Paul's home baked cookies, made it happen:

On Committee boat:  Paul Brennan (RO), Arlene Taylor, Liz MacIntyre, Allison Brannen, Eleanor MacKay.  And in mark boat,  Chris Lieb  and Neil Payne , who definitely earned their cookies.
Terrific job everyone - thank you.

Now...

This is the tough time of the season for me.  Things are winding down and enthusiasm levels are tanking - let's face it, nobody cares anymore -  but I still have a job to do and that includes staffing 2 more events before we're done:

Sat. Sept. 20  Summerville Memorial Race (LORC)  This is a long distance race.  I need an RO and /or driver and Committee boat crew.

Sat. Sept. 27  Black Swan/Double Time Challenge  I need Committee boat crew for this one bell buoy distance race.  I need an RO and/or driver and Committee boat crew

I got virtually no response the last time I put out this notice, so I'm hoping for better results this time.
Don't let me down folks...just 2 more races.

The ABYC Opti Race Team had ten Optis represent us this past weekend at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club.

Wyatt Small, Amy Glennie, Davis Dejean and Emily van Rossem represented ABYC on the Green Fleet course.  Showing all of the improvement that they have had this season, they all raced extremely well and had some fantastic results.  Wyatt, who rejoined the team after being off for the summer, had some great races including getting 2nd. in some races.  Amy continued to show improvement and started off the regatta with a bullet, finishing in 4th. place.  Davis, fresh off her return from the Opti Canadians in Nova Scotia, had a strong regatta including a phenomenal Saturday with numerous 1st. place finishes and ended the regatta with a 2nd. overall.  Emily also sailed extremely well and stayed consistent throughout the event.  She finished with a 1st. place overall finish and won a hen.

On the Championship Fleet course, Paul Staadecker, Annie Gravely, Kate Evans, Hunter Dejean, Martin Staadecker and Oliver van Rossem, also had a great regatta, competing in a fleet of 29 boats.  With the weather holding on Saturday they were able to complete five races, which was fortunate because on Sunday there was no wind and they weren't able to start a race.  Paul showed some spectacular moments, including a race where he finished in the top five, but was black flagged.  Annie continued to work on her starts and sailing in clean air.  She improved all weekend and was doing better with each race. Kate also worked on fine-tuning her boat and making it move faster.  Hunter, also fresh back from the Canadians, with salt stains on her jacket, was proud to show what she had learned and finished in 10th.  Martin had a great time and finished in 9th.  Oliver had a fantastic regatta, starting the day with two 3rd. place finishes followed by a 2nd.  Oliver sailed well, finding all of the right shifts, had some terrific starts and finished the regatta 1st. in Blue Fleet and 4th. overall (tied for 3rd. in points).

We continue to train at ABYC on Sundays for the remainder of fall. To see photos of our team follow us on Facebook.  If you want to support our team, we are fundraising for a new coach boat.  Please contact us if you would like to donate or contribute in other ways to this campaign.

___________________________________________

This past weekend, four members of the ABYC Senior Race Team attended the Cornish Hen Regatta held in Hamilton accompanied by Guest Coach Sarah Douglas for the weekend.

The first day of racing brought light winds and tricky conditions.  It was important that the sailors stayed focused and kept their heads out of their boats whilst paying attention to the shifts.  They completed 5 races on the first day.  Although tiring, it ended up being a good move due to the lack of wind on Sunday.  The race committee sent all fleets out on Sunday in hope of races, but after abandoning a race and waiting on the water for a few hours, the sailors were sent back to shore to pack up and present awards.  Our 29er sailors Rowland Goddard and Thomas Kidd were the only ones in their fleet, which gave them the opportunity to work on boat speed and communication.  In the laser fleet, Adam Gillies continued to improve his starts, whilst Quinten Beelik continued to work on his upwind tactics.

Congratulations to all the sailors!
