ADVENTURE BEGINS FOR ABYC FAMILY

Last Friday friends gathered to wish "Bon Voyage" to Ron & Cindy Boudah, their son Connor and Zoe their Golden Retriever.  The Boudah family left ABYC Monday on Akula for a year of traveling to the Bahamas and returning by next August.  We wish them a safe voyage.

Help Wanted!

We have an opening for Chair of the Property Department.  Property Department is responsible for the maintenance of the Clubhouse and the Sailing School building.  Working with the Club Manager and the House Committee, this position identifies areas of the clubhouse that require repairs or maintenance, develops budgets and recruits members to get the work done.  If you have any interest in taking on the position please contact me at vcmember@abyc.on.ca or talk to me at the club.

The House Committee has reconvened.  The members are Kent Parsons, Nancy Ogden, Chris Hannah, Linda DeRusha, Sandra Dockman and me.  We would welcome one or two more people.  House Committee's main focus is our Food and Beverage service.  One of our main concerns is Friday Fine Dining.  While we have a small and committed group that come to the club on Fridays, we wonder if we can attract more people.  If you have any ideas being it themes, menu selections, wine lists or entertainment or decor, please let myself or any of the House Committee members know.

It's your club, use it.

That's all I got for this week.  See ya at the club!

White Wall Repair Continued...
- Roger Marsh, Chair - Wall Repair Committee
___________________________________________________________

Work teams: will be an integral part of the overall plan.  Arriving for work party on a Saturday morning and asking what can I do would be good but hardly efficient.  The majority of workers must be part of a team that learns a job, practices a job and completes the job and has enough members that the team works more or less independently for tools, material, special equipment co-ordinanation and clean-up.  More on this later, but obviously a degree of sophistication that goes beyond past practices.

How long should a work party be? Given the enormity of this task I'm going to suggest that for the duration of this project we start at 8:30 am. and continue to 12:30 pm. as a minimum commitment to the task.

If you have had past experience with wall repair with Stephen Trevitt and his teams, please be prepared to share your knowledge and experience by leading a task team that you are familiar with and/or training new members to be proficient.  We'll be in touch, soon.

Several times this summer on club cruises and other social events, members who previously worked on teams building docks or repairing other parts of our infrastructure have said to me, "you know, I learned a lot and it was fun".   So prepare yourselves for a fun Fall and Winter of "Team" camaraderie and work to get the first stage of this project completed before spring.

More details to follow in the coming weeks.

Roger Marsh

Chair: Wall Repair Committee

p.s. Wanted Immediately: Members who are familiar with technical drawing protocols and can use either Google Sketch or Autocad to produce working drawings for component parts required from sketch. (contact: penro@sympatico.ca)

Our club grounds still need TLC!
- Ann Kay, Chair, Landscaping Committee
___________________________________________________________________________

A big thanks to Nancy Ogden, Liz Heron, Dave Gilbert and all those who have spent time pulling weeds and watering.

Our grounds are massive!  You can never give the plantings too much water, the winds from the lake dry out most areas and after so much time and effort, it would be such a shame to lose what has been invested.  You may have noticed many new bushes, these can handle buckets and buckets of water. Once established, they should continue their good looks and hopefully be almost self sufficient, other than the watering of course.  Our Yard staff have been really quite good and we should be most appreciative.

So, if you are looking at adding to the Job Jar, please feel free to weed and water to your hearts content.  If you are not sure what is a weed, then water and someone hopefully in the know will pull it out.  The area just to the east of our Clubhouse entrance is in dire need, as is outside Casa Ballman plus the surrounds.

A big thanks in advance.

1.1 The date of the Challenge Race is noted on the Events calendar.

1.2 A competitors' meeting will be held upstairs in the clubhouse at 1200. The

The Etobicoke Yacht Club Open Regatta was held under almost perfect conditions this past weekend. Not many ABYC boats participated, but of those who did, congratulations first and foremost to the Flynn family aboard Starwatch for their second place finish in IRC 3.

Congratulations also to Murray Gainer and the Lively crew for their fourth place finish in IRC 2, and to Paul Angus Bark and the Crime Scene team for their 8th place finish.  Takes time getting used to a new boat.

A relatively small J24 fleet raced with Eli Gershman and the crew of Black Swan placing 6th while Tim Connolly and the Humidor team placed 7th.  Martin Gibb and his Consort team raced in the C&C 27 division.

A slight correction to last week's report.  I realized after filing that there were still a couple of races to go at the CORK Olympic Classes Regatta.  Sarah Douglas wound up 6th in the Radial Class while Matt Sherar placed 22 in the Laser standard rig fleet.

Next up is the QCYC Open Regatta on September 6.  ABYC is the ONLY club other that QCYC to have won the Club Challenge Trophy and we are the defending champions.  Let's get a great turnout for this, the last of the Open Regatta Series, and defend our title!

That's all for this week.

Canadian Optimist Championships,
Lunenburg, Nova Scotia
- Jeff Dejean, ABYC Sailing School Coordinator
____________________________________________________________________________________

Hunter and Davis Dejean represented ABYC at the 2014 Optimist Canadian Nationals in Lunenburg, NS.  This week long regatta attracted over 90 boats in the Championship Fleet, racing in the open waters of Mahone Bay, and another 30 boats in the Green Fleet, whose course was a stone's throw from the Lunenburg Yacht Club (LYC) clubhouse.  The first half of the week was windy, with races running in 10-15 knots of steady breeze, and the latter part of the week brought more mellow conditions.  Hunter reached her top half of the fleet goal in Championship fleet, with a 38th place overall finish including races in the top 20, and while the Green fleet was not scored Davis enjoyed the racing.

Fresh water at LYC is a precious commodity as they run off a well, so one of the regatta highlights was post race boat rinsing to clear away the salt water, provided by the Lunenburg Fire Department.

ABYC's Optimist team is marked its fifth year anniversary in 2014.  The team continues to grow, fielding a fleet of up to 19 boats at local regattas, and developing a significant presence in the optimist community.  This is also due to our growing experience running Optimist courses at other clubs, which could eventually translate to hosting a major Opti regatta such as the National Championships.

Cheers,

Jeff
