ISLANDS...WHAT ISLANDS??

A visitor to our area would be forgiven for thinking that we had islands near ABYC.  These "Islands"
are actually the first protrusion of the Leslie Street Spit as seen through the low-lying fog last week.

Haulout Crane Storage
- Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chair
______________________________________________________________________________________

Although we are still quite some time away from haulout, the September 8 deadline for notifications regarding boat storage is approaching faster.  As the harbour is full, and yard storage this year will be constrained by the work on the seawalls, it is essential for the haul plan that we have an accurate count of those boats that are to be hauled by crane and stored on the club's property this year.  Therefore, anyone who falls into one of the following categories is asked to inform me (copies to the office) if they are planning to haul by crane and store at the club this winter:
  1. Owners of boats that did not haul/store with us last year (including those who regularly haul/store elsewhere).
  2. Owners of boats that were hauled/stored mast-up last year.
  3. Owners who stored with us last year but do not plan to do so this year.
  4. Members who have a different boat this year and wish it to be stored in the craneyard.
Owners who hauled/stored with us last year and plan to do so again this year, do not need to inform the office.

If there are any questions, please feel free to contact me.  (amirvish@hotmail.com)

ABYC Yard Staff Change
- Rennie Stobbs, ABYC Manager
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Members,

I must announce that our Yard Supervisor, Mike Kovacs will be leaving ABYC at the end of this week.  Happily, the reason is that his wife has accepted a teaching position in Calgary.

Mike has been with us for 7 years and during that time has learned how ABYC works.  From the Saturday morning work parties, all our incoming cruises, Launch and Haulout, Mike has been a go to guy, ready to step up to the plate to make sure everything runs smoothly.   When we had gate problems, Mike was the guy who "stood guard" overnight and who could forget his cameo in the bar last winter.

As to ABYC, well she carries on, Greg Chapman will step up and along with Bill Brennan and Matt Glanfield, the transition should go well.

I hope that you will all join me in wishing Mike and his family all the very best for the future. We as a Club owe him a very big "Thank You" for a job well done.

Sunny outlook for the ABYC Adult Keelboat Program

Lots of New Members Learn to Sail at ABYC

The Adult Keelboat Program registered 54 students this summer, an increase of 11 students over last year and an all time high.  These students are also automatically Introductory Associate members.  This year we contracted with Humber College to have a Humber boat, a Hunter 31 named Sunshine, dedicated full time to the program so Tricanna could be used for an introductory co-op boat for keelboat program graduates.  This pilot program was highly successful as 10 graduates enrolled as the introductory Co-op members.  The program has provided a sailing opportunity not previously available to new graduates and we hope this will help them hone their skills and that they return to ABYC  next year.

White Wall repair plan
Fall/Winter 2014/1015

- Roger Marsh - Chair, Wall Repair Committee

When you have finished reading this report you are supposed to say to yourself  "WOW!! This is a lot of work!  How can I best help?"

The Board has requested the Wall Repair Committee to prepare a 3 to 4 year plan to replace all the steel wall in the harbour.  We plan to accomplish this gargantuan task with a combination of member participation labour for preparation, assistance to the contractor, excavation and installation of wall retention Tie-Backs and all site restoration and amelioration.  The chosen contractor will drive new interconnected steel sheet directly in front of the old rusting wall @ 5 sheets per hour for approximately 8 days.  Hiring a contractor to do this part of the work is actually cheaper for the club than buying and maintaining our own equipment to do the job.

Briefly, to prepare for the contractor, to repair white wall (470 ft) this year, we must:

  • Redraw the crane yard for extra whitewall space.
  • Remove all Vdocks and Main Dock attachments.
  • Lift & store all board walk.
  • Disconnect and/or reroute all power and bubbler cables and pipes.
  • Order, accept delivery, stage and prepare enough sheet steel for the repair (315 sheets, 19" wide, 18ft long, heavy!).
  • Possibly remove rocks and excavate some of the berm in front of the clubhouse.
  • Prepare protection for, or strip, Red Dock and Green Dock Patio for construction machine room
  • Mark the location of all existing Tie-Backs, water pipes, power lines, etc

Other than the work done last winter in the Dry Sail area, we haven't driven one sheet of steel yet.  Please think about how you may contribute to this task to assure our Club continues to exist for the next generation of sailors.  We will continue this information to the membership about all aspects of this project over the next few months.

A team of ABYC volunteers and sailors headed up the 401 to Kingston for the beginning of CORK, the Opti Internationals.  Approximately 110 boats competed, and ABYC sailors fared very well.  Race committee volunteers included Paul Brennan, Ian Gow and Nick Bailey, as well as honorary member Pat Lymburner.

Our top sailor was Oliver van Rossem, who finished 26th overall (of 87 boats) and 10th in the Blue Fleet (11& 12 year olds).  Martin Staadecker placed 32nd overall and 20th in the Red Fleet (13-15).  Hunter DeJean placed 35th overall, (22nd in Red) but her moment of glory was placing FIRST in one of the races.  She led the race from start to finish, which must have been a thrill for her dad Jeff, watching from his Laser.  The only other Opti dad watching from a Laser was Oliver van Rossem's dad.  Hunter was the fourth best Canadian female.

Paul Staadecker was 45th overall and 19th in Blue Fleet.  Annabel Gravely was 71st overall (31st in Red) and Danny Assimakopoulos was 76th overall and 6th in the White fleet (10 and under).  Placing just behind Danny was Paul Wortman in 78th and 7th place respectively.

Special mention was made of the loaning of the Jack Cameron by ABYC.  As many of you know, Jack was Chief Judge at CORK for over 20 years, so it is especially fitting that the boat that bears his name is prominent at CORK.

This week features the Canadian Youth Championships at CORK.  Full results for all CORK events can be found at http://www.cork.org/2014-results/.

The next LORC event is the EYC Open, August 22 and 23.

Finally, I would like to apologize for a mistake in last week's issue. Richard Weld placed first sailing with Kent Paisley, while Mike Hren was third sailing with Alan Leibel, both in the Etchells fleet.

That's all for now.

That's all for this week.

I can't believe it's the middle of August already. Things are taking on that winding down feeling and LYRA fatigue is lingering, but there is still work to do, so once again, I come begging:

Sat., Aug. 16  FAMILY RACE #2

I need committee boat crew for this one.

Sat., Aug. 23 - Sun., Aug. 24     EYC OPEN REGATTA

We are sending a mark boat to this regatta in exchange for help they gave us.  I need a driver/mark layer and possibly a helper.

Sat. Sept. 6  QCYC OPEN REGATTA

This is a 2 day event but we run a course on Saturday only.  I need the usual complement of committee boat and mark boat crews.  At this point, I have only one person signed up.

I sent out an email about these events last week and got absolutely no response...disappointing , to say the least.  I hope this provides better results - don't let me down folks.

This past weekend, seven ABYC Junior Race Team members competed at Opti CORK hosted at Portsmouth Olympic Harbor in Kingston.  There were 87 competitors from Canada, USA, Bermuda and Mexico, making this the biggest fleet we have raced in this year and the strongest competition.

Friday's conditions provided us with a typical Kingston thermal, filling in to 12 knots. We were able to get off three races.  Saturday it filled in to 9 knots in the afternoon allowing for four races to be completed.  A special congratulations is in order to Hunter Dejean, who got a bullet in the third race of the day, making her the only Canadian this regatta to win a race!  Sunday started off very light, making it difficult to get a race off.  With winds building up to 6 knots in the early afternoon, the race committee was able to run two races.

Congratulations to Oliver van Rossem, the top ABYC sailor, who finished 26th overall, and 10th in blue fleet. Martin Staadecker finished 32nd overall, with his best race being a well deserved 12th place.  Hunter Dejean and Paul Staadecker finished in 35th and 45th respectively.  Annabel Gravely, who is Opti Racing for her first season, finished in a commendable 71st.  Danny Assimakopoulos and Paul Wortman finished in 75th and 78th respectively.

Opti CORK concludes the summer regatta season for the Junior Race Team.  We are extremely proud of our sailors' performance this summer.  They have learned a lot and represented our club very well!  Their next regatta will be Cornish Hen, hosted by RHYC, in the fall.
