Important message to all Ship2Shore Subscribers
___________________________________________________

On June 28, 2014, all Ship2Shore subscribers received a message from us asking them to confirm their email address.  The reason for this (compliance with the new Canadian Anti-Spam Law) was explained in the regular Ship2Shore edition on July 2, 2014.  We also indicated that in the near future, all email addresses that had not been confirmed would be removed from our Subscriber Database.

Over the next few weeks, removal of unconfirmed email addresses will take place.

If you stop receiving Ship2Shore in the next 2 weeks, it will be due to:

A)  You indicated in the Confirmation Message of
June 28th. that you no longer want to receive S2S

or

B)  You deleted the original message of June 28 and did not confirm that you want to continue receiving S2S.

If you accidentally deleted the Confirmation Message or if you have changed your mind and want to continue receiving Ship2Shore, you will have to resubscribe

This process is very easy - simply go to the ABYC website (www.abyc.on.ca) and scroll down the opening page.  At the bottom, on the right side you will find the space for subscribing to Ship2Shore.  Enter your email address and follow the instructions.  You might receive a confirmation email from "Constant Contact" asking you to confirm that you wish to receive Ship2Shore.  In that case, you must confirm before you can receive Ship2Shore again.

If you have any questions or encounter difficulties with the resubscribing process, please contact us at:  s2seditors@gmail.com

Host Clubs available during LYRA Weekend
_____________________________________________________________________________________

We are coming up to the busy LYRA racing week-end and we would like to ask you to free up your slip in order to accommodate the incoming racing fleet.  In order to facilitate this process, I have been in contact with clubs in the immediate vicinity and please find below a list of YCs that have slips set aside for ABYC:

LSYC - 3 slips
EYC -  8 slips
DYC - on the wall
BPYC, CBYC and HYC will all have slips.
MCC a few slips
PCYC - some slips

We have not yet heard from RCYC but we are confident they will have spots for us.

In addition, if you do plan to leave this weekend please ensure that you file a sail plan so that we know where there will be slips for the inbound fleet.

Thanks for your cooperation

Tuscarora Cruise

The hardy group of 13 boats and one "Land Yacht" enjoyed an always very friendly club and great facilities.  Our USA hosts were extremely helpful and even lent a car for use to go food shopping in Wilson for our party needs.  They gave us full access to their kitchen, with two stoves, pots and dishes.

The group included 8 newbie cruisers who experienced their first cruise and apparently enjoyed every second of it.  Some of the crowd were racers, who were pleasantly surprised at how relaxing sailing can be.

The fun started on Friday night as a group of boats traveled over to have an extra day.  A number partied at the Sunset Grill for Friday night dinner and had a great time.  The Saturday party was full of a great and yummy variety of appetizers, chicken main course and pie, watermelon and rum cake (with lots of rum!).  A toast was made to the late Mary Pappas for her early push to have TYC accept our cruise.

The weather cooperated with easy wind and waves to allow for pleasant travels with very few tacks.

Some members were extra hardy and cycled, walked and ran, around the Town of Wilson to shop and visit a local winery.

Customs check-in went smoothly with video-phone access and on-the-water check-in for those with Nexus passes.  To avoid challenges, we opted to buy much of the food locally, but it appears that wasn't really necessary.  A few miles out on the way back some of our travelers were greeted by the RCMP dinghy (a large and powerful dinghy) performing customs spot checks on the water.   Apparently the officers were very friendly and cooperative.

We look forward to the RCYC cruise on August 16/17!

Did you know? In the 19th Century, Ashbridge's Bay was a particularly choice spot for fishing and hunting. The waters teemed with bass, perch, catfish, and sunfish, and in the fall, duck-hunters pounded the dawn skies over the Bay with fierce volleys from their shotguns. The marsh around the Bay was prime territory for muskrat, which provided fur for the lining of coats. Where Eastern and Leslie now intersect, there was a large icehouse, and in winter, large amounts of ice were cut out of the Bay and taken to be stored in the icehouse for sale to East-enders to put in their lemonade when the weather warmed. All of this, of course, was well before the arrival of the sewage-treatment plant.

Speaking of the water in the Bay, last week From the Archive asked who took an impromptu swim during LYRA 1997. No one correctly named the current member mentioned in the Leeshore Update from September 1997, so the chair of the Archive Committee will have to drink the prize that was offered himself. If you're curious who the honey-dipper was, you couldn't do better than to ask around!

This week's question: When were Junior memberships first offered at ABYC?

A. 1938   B. 1958   C. 1978   D. 1998

Nomination Committee:  Focus on the Board -
Vice Commodore - Marine Services

One of the board positions up for election this fall is the Vice Commodore - Marine Services.  This position is key to ABYC's primary function "to advance the sport of yachting in all its branches".  The club's by-law defines the role this way:

The Vice Commodore - Marine Services shall be responsible for the use of Water space used by the Club, including provision and maintenance of floating and permanent docks, allocation of space for all boats including dry-sailed boats according to Club policy, organization of haul-out and launch, winter storage, and provision and maintenance of all haul-out equipment (including the railway, winch rail-car, dinghy launch equipment and ways), facilities for dry-sailed boats, dinghy storage area, yard, including gas dock facility, grounds and landscaping, and the hiring and supervision of gas dock/yard staff, and shall, ex-officio, be a member of the Yard Management Committee, Harbour Management Committee and Landscaping Committee.

Prior Vice Commodores - Marine Services have said this position is one of great challenges and great rewards.  Because the role affects every member directly, you get to know literally everyone and their boats.  Building, supporting and maintaining strong committees is essential.  Although the job culminates with each year's haul-out and launch, it goes on all year, working out how to accommodate major regattas and other events.  Another aspect of the position is working with the Club Manager and the gas dock/yard staff, as well as other Board Members, to ensure our marine services are carried out effectively.  While the job requires some technical understanding, it is essentially a matter of working with other members to anticipate, plan, organize and execute all of the work required to ensure our harbour and yard are used to best advantage.

If this role appeals to you, feel free to discuss the job with past incumbents such as Bob Hedley, Roger Marsh or Rick Bott, or any member of the Nominating Committee.

Flares
Do you have expired flares?

You can't light them, throw them in the water or in your household garbage

The Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons and The Rigging Shoppe are hosting a

Safety Equipment Education and Flare Disposal Day

Learn about required safety equipment, the care and maintenance of that equipment and how to safely and effectively use flares when needed.

DATE:  Thurs. Aug. 7th, 9-8pm, Fri. Aug. 8th, 9-6pm and Sat. Aug. 9th, 9-5pm

PLACE:  The Rigging Shoppe Ltd.  44 Midwest Rd, Toronto, Ontario M1P 3A9

In accordance with Transport Canada requirements, flares are approved for four years from the date of manufacture. Typically, this means that you need to replace your flares every third or fourth boating season and dispose of the old ones.  If they have expired or will expire during the boating season, you must replace them... it's the law!

Electrofishing Demonstration
- Jim Allen
_______________________________________________

On July 22nd Rebecca and I watched a demonstration of Electrofishing and survey methods put on by Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA).  The demonstration took place off the South Wall of our Harbour.  During the process a boat goes slowly through the water with electro wires extended into the water.  The electric shock mildly stuns the fish and they come to the surface and are netted and brought to shore.  Once on  shore they are recorded by species and each fish is weighed and measured before being released back into the bay.  When they get something unusual like an eel they may tag it for future tracking purposes.  This is all part of an ongoing conservation management program of the shore waters along the Toronto waterfront and other towns along the TRCA catchment area.

Lisa Turnbull, a Project Manager with TRCA explained that our Harbour is full of fish of all kinds because of the calm waters and good feeding ground.  In the summer there are small mouth bass and pike and in the fall there are brown trout and salmon.  This is in addition to more common fish like yellow perch, catfish, sunfish, suckers and carp.

It was a very educational experience.

LYRA is now well underway, with the Freeman having taken place in interesting weather.

Congratulations to Alan Jenkins and crew for their second place finish in PHRF aboard Merlin M2, and to Carolyn and Ralph Weckesser for winning their division on the short course.

Murray Gainer and the crew of Lively, sufficiently recovered from the 600, went back at it and placed 5th in the IRC fleet.

Meanwhile, the ABYC team of David Holmes (helm) and Mike Hren (crew), accepted the RCYC Club Challenge sailed in Ideal 18's on Saturday. They managed to finish third in all six races, which wound them in second place overall.  Congratulations!

Full results:

1st Boulevard Club
2nd ABYC
3rd PCYC
4th OYS
5th QCYC
6th IYC
7th RCYC
8th Water Rats
9th Hilton Head ( represented by Tom Webster and Paul Henderson )
10th TS&CC
11th Bronte YC

Meanwhile, the newly reinvented Youngstown regatta, called the Can Am Challenge also took place last weekend.  Pasquale Leone and the crew of Hammertime II placed 8th in the Beneteau 36.7 fleet.  There may have been other ABYC participants, but as Yacht Scoring doesn't bother to list the club, my apologies if I didn't recognize the name of you or your boat.

There is still time to sign up for LYRA, so be sure to visit http://abyc.on.ca/lyra2014/racer-info/ and register NOW! Don't miss the fun.

That's all for this week.

The Lake Ontario 600 Race
- Dr. Gitte Frederiksen

_____________________________________________________________________________________

A crew bank member "rises" to the adventures of the world's longest Freshwater race.

I started racing at ABYC 2 ½ years ago during which time I have been on the T-Birds, "Crime Scene" and "Lively".  This July I had the pleasure of crewing on "Lively" for the Lake Ontario 600 Race.  As a novice in distance racing, I had little to relate to in preparing myself for what I was about to endure.  Having no shortage of "wise words" from presumably well-meaning souls, there seemed to be an overwhelming trend of my participation bordering masochism, insanity or torture.  For 4 days, 20hrs, 0 min. and 24 seconds, I endured!  Dug deep, found a way to stay positive and now I can proudly say that I did it!

It was undoubtedly a physical and a mental challenge.  An inaugural, historic and memorable race, where Mother Nature threw almost everything she had at us, and to quote Joe Doris, Chair of the LOOR Committee: "We are now all better sailors for it!".  However on a personal note, I would be happy if I don't have to round Main Duck Island in the near future!  Yikes, what a "whipping", 29 knots the first rounding and 20 hrs. straight into 17-20 knot winds and big waves from the second rounding towards the Niagara mark.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Murray and Winnie Gainer, Nick Bolden and Kyle Harvey for giving me this experience.  Their support and constant words of encouragement had a big impact in my being able to endure this.  What an amazing team.  So proud of our second overall finish!!

LYRA - Freeman Cup Race

We started the LYRA events this week with the Freeman Cup on Saturday.  Because this race started on Saturday morning and would finish any time after midnight, into Sunday morning, it was particularly challenging finding people to fill out the RC crew.

I would like to thank Elaine Parker, Trixie Hoyer, Mary Jacobs and Kathy Bouey for helping RO, Dave Steenbergen get the boats started off on the 100 mile and 65 mile courses.  Since we didn't know just when they would be finishing we had to have crews of 2 sitting at anchor on the Sarah Ashbridge, in the wee hours, waiting to record the boats as they crossed the finish line - no mean feat, given the pea soup fog that rolled in.  HUMONGOUS thanks to Paul McDonald, Roy Little, Lise Carrier, Dave Steenbergen, Rebecca Lewis and Cam Edmunds.  Particular gratitude to Dave and Lise, who unexpectedly ended up pulling a double shift from 03:00 to 09:00.  Even though in the end, all the boats finished before their scheduled shifts, and their help was not required , I'd also like to thank Eli Gershman, Shawn Gershman, Colin Andrews and Barb Baniuk for signing on to do their bit.

I really appreciate it folks.
