ABYC Opti Race Team
5th Anniversary Fundraiser
_______________________________________________________________________

As many of you know the ABYC Opti Race Team is celebrating 5 years this season. Our team has had tremendous growth since we began in 2010 and now we have over twenty athletes and three coaches representing ABYC at regattas.  For our fifth season we are raising money for a new coach boat to accommodate our expanding team.  Our goal is to raise $20,000 for a new boat and trailer that can take some of our Optimists to regattas.

We are raising money with various methods.  We are selling limited edition hats and t-shirts featuring a special 5 year logo.  Please come to the Junior Club and support our team.  We have sizes for kids and adults, priced at $25 and $14 respectively (HST included).  If you can't make it to the Junior Club during camp hours, please contact me directly and I can arrange to meet you at another time.

We have also partnered with SailCanada so that ABYC, through SailCanada, may issue tax receipts for donations over $25 for this cause.  Below is a link to a one page form which can be filled out and sent to Roxanne at admin@abyc.on.ca.  Donations can be made by both cheque and credit card.  Copies of this form will also be available with Roxanne in the office.  Please be sure to state "ABYC Opti Race Team" as the name of the specific program.  If this field is left blank, SailCanada will be able to put the funds towards other causes.

Finally, we are looking for sponsors for this project.  If you or anyone you know is willing to sponsor, we have various recognition opportunities available.  Please let me know if you can help!

Thank you all in advance for your support of our programme!

MARY
_______________________________________________________

On behalf of Allysa, Evan, Mary's mother and brothers, I would like thank everyone who participated in Mary's Celebration of Life.

The Elgin Mills Visitation Centre had never seen such turn out over a two day period which clearly shows how many people Mary's spirit touched over the years.

The representation from ABYC was tremendous and I had many of my family come up to me later and ask; "Those Boat People are great, they all had lots of stories of you and Mary and they loved her so much.......How long have you guys been sailing?".  Not long but to quote Jess C. Scott  "Friends are the family you choose"

I would also like to thank specifically:

Danno Heimann for delivering a touching Eulogy; Winnie Gainer and Terry
Fagan for their personal memories.

Roger Marsh, Bruce Hannah and Paul Lefneski who acted a Pall Bearers

Penny McDonald, Celia Lum, Howard Franklin, Mai Meret, Krista Slack, Phil Giddings and Tina Heimann for the many trips to PMH and helping with the final arrangements

The impact of Mary's life is still being felt through your generous donations to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.  I am receiving notices from PMH daily and want everyone to know what a huge impact PMH had on Mary's life and particularly over the last few weeks, and she did the same to them.  Mary was herself right to the end, she got to know all the nurses and they would always come by at the end their shifts to see how she was doing, even if she was not their patient.  These  people are highly under appreciated for what they do until you need them, sorry for the political commentary  but I have seen it first hand now and you could not pay me enough to do what they do.  That is why Mary specifically asked for donations to go to PMH.

Again thanks to all our ABYC family.

Regards,

Chris Pappas

ENJOY A VISIT TO ONE OF OUR NEIGHBOURING YACHT CLUBS

LYRA 2014

July 26th to August 3rd

This year, ABYC has the privilege of hosting LYRA 2014 and as is the tradition during these events, the host club tries to move non-racing boats to other clubs to allow racers to use your slip and the club accommodations.  The opportunity for non-racers is to move their boat to a neighbouring yacht club and enjoy their facility at no charge for slip usage.

In that regard, we would like to ask you to consider moving your boat to a club of your choosing to allow your slip to be used by a visiting racer.  We have posted a sign-up sheet downstairs, in the sailors lounge, where you will be asked to indicate to us your first and second choice of clubs to visit during LYRA.  For example, the boats visiting Tuscarora this week-end would return to their host club on Sunday rather than to ABYC.

Please consider this proposition as a great opportunity to spend time at another club and to showcase ABYC as a first class facility.

Latest news:  Lakeshore Yacht Club has only 1 slip available and QCYC has an inbound group and will be over capacity.

Any questions, please feel free to contact me at luba11@sympatico.ca

ABYC receives Shells & Sails Certificate
_____________________________________________________________________________________

ABYC was awarded a certificate from Shells & Sails, a partnership with ROWONTARIO and Ontario Sailing.  The COAST (Club Operational Asset & Standards Tool) is an assessment tool to highlight what the club does, be it well or not so well.  Shells & Sails is a resource for the operational side of the club and can give future guidance on many things from on water activities or governance.

ABYC received a 4 star rating.

From the Archives
______________________________________________________________________________________

Last week From the Archives asked readers which two boats that had won their divisions in LYRA 1997 were still in the Club.  To the surprise of the Archive Committee, this turned out to be a trick question.  The correct answer, which no one presented to the Committee, is that there is really only one boat from the winners of LYRA 1997 still left in the Club, and that is the late Len Alksnis's Trimpus (now sailing under Sandra Dockman's flag).  Both Jim Allen and Bob Wilson did guess Trimpus correctly at roughly the same time and thus are each awarded a prize.

This week, we have another quiz on the LYRA theme.  The first person to provide the correct answer to archives@abyc.on.ca will receive a beverage (a glass of wine or a pint) at the bar courtesy of the Archive Committee.  The question is as follows (no tricks this time):  Diane Flanagan in The Leeshore Update for September 1997 reported that during LYRA 1997, two ABYC members "took impromptu swims in our lovely harbour." One of the two is still a member of our Club.  Can you name that enthusiastic swimmer?

ABYC Race Committee goes to PCYC

PCYC has been running the Steerers and 4 Sisters Regattas for many years, and it is one of my favourite regattas to attend.  Seeing all the young sailors, including many of ours, full of enthusiasm, confidence, independence, and energy gives you a great reward for the work.  This year we sent a full fleet, 3 boats and 10 people for each of the four days.  (PCYC has already helped us with our Open regatta, and will be back in a week for LYRA course racing.)

Before heading out, we had to prepare and make sure we had all the equipment we needed.  We also needed to cover our Thursday night races ... thank you to Howard Franklin and Beaucoup who graciously hosted the race committee for the Series D race.

Then we faced a real dilemma.  A family of barn swallows had taken up residence on the Sarah.  We'd done evening and bell-buoy races with just a little bit of attitude from the parents, but this was going to be an absence of four days.

While swallows have been known to make a mess on boats (as do some most landlubbers), they also eat their weight in mosquitoes and such and are a protected species.  After consultation with the Aurora office of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, we confirmed that a careful move of the nest was appropriate, given that the boat would be away from the area for so long.  A new shelf for the nest was built from recycled materials and attached to the equipment shed.  A team of 7 ornithologists with special instruments was contacted to perform the relocation, but didn't show up, so yours truly did the job with my trusty sailing knife and a Tim Horton's bag.  We are most happy to report that the nest moved in one piece, the parents quickly found the new location, and the residents are getting bigger each day.

The racing was great, and PCYC were fine hosts for the visiting RC and all the competitors.  Thursday brought cool weather and good winds.  Friday brought sun and just enough wind to get off two starts, but no completed races.  Saturday was our best day, with four full races, and Sunday ... after getting up at way-too-early, we sat at the docks until 11:50 waiting for the fog to clear.  We got one race before the wind started circling the course and the curfew hit us.

To parents of Opti sailors, I want to share a tip.  Just bring out the Uniform flag (black flag effect, but easier on the race committee), and they'll all line up and behave!

There are pictures of the RCYC coach boat, with all their team rafted to it, and one of the ABYC coach boats.  Please give generously to the campaign for a new Coach boat for the Optis -- we need a bigger one!

Thank you to all those who gave so generously of their time to help ABYC run the Optimist course this year!

ABYC's racers and race committee volunteers have been extremely busy lately.

The LO 300 / 600 had no sooner finished when it was time to pack up the dinghies and RC boats and head off to PCYC for the annual kidsfest known as the Steerers, immediately followed by the Four Sisters.

First the LO 300 results.

Congratulations to Murray Gainer and his Lively crew for finishing second in the LO 600, for those masochists who don't think 300 miles on Lake Ontario in July is enough. Lively placed second in this marathon event, behind only Brent Hughes whom many of us know, who sailed solo.

In the 300 portion , Murray was just getting warmed up, and finished fourth in his division.  Congratulations to Graham Toms and the crew of The Cat Came Back for their 3rd place finish,

Also competing were Sona (Calum Semple and Giles Osborne) who were 5th, Pasquale Leon and the crew aboard Hammertime II who placed 4th in division, and Paul Angus Bark and the crew of Crime Scene and Larry Harrison & crew on Merlin M2 who both withdrew.

Full results can be found at http://www.yachtscoring.com/event_results_cumulative.cfm?eid=967.

The big weekend at PCYC was held July 17 & 18 for the Steerers, which is a junior event, followed immediately by the Four Sisters on Saturday and Sunday.  It used to be easy for me to write up these events. There would be a handful of boats from ABYC as we didn't have much of a racing team.  Under the direction of mostly Finley McEwan, the racing program has flourished to the point where 23! boats raced under the ABYC burgee for the Steerers and 19 raced at the Four Sisters.  ABYC is suddenly becoming a real racing team at junior events, and with any luck, the coach boats won't fall apart completely or sink...

I will give you the highlights.  There were 211 boats at the Steerers and 162 boats at the Four Sisters. The Sarah Ashbridge, Robert Humphrey and Jack Cameron ran the Optimist Dinghy Course under the direction of Paul Brennan.  I'll let Molly thank everyone else on the crew.

Steerers:

Opti: Annabelle Gravely - 4th in Red, Nathan Latka, 3rd in white, Danny Assimakopoulos (everyone knows Danny!), 4th in white, Aidan Massey-Garrison 5th in green.
29er: Samuel Bonin and Chloe Carr - 4th
Club 420:  Sarah Christensen and Zoe Sherar - 16th out of 63 boats
420 White Sail: Jack Randle and William Bonin - 3rd (26 boats) and Kai Malcolm and Ethan Cyrenne were 6th.
Laser: Adam Gillies was second (our best finish)
Quinten Beelik was 8th and Ainsley Doell 17th in the Laser Radial class of 37 boats.  Ainsley was 4th in the female category.

You can view the full results at: http://pcyc.net/index.cfm?ID=628

Four Sisters:
Opti: Martin Staadecker was 5th in red Optis, and Quinten Beelik was right behind him in 6th, Oliver Van Rossem was SECOND in the Blue fleet, behind the delightful Felix Cutler training here all the way from Bermuda.  Kate Evans was 11th and the top female in the Blue fleet.
Nathan Latka was second in white fleet while Paul Wortmann was third.
29er: Samuel Bonin and Chloe Carr were third
Laser Radial:    Ainsley Doell was17th in the 46 boat fleet and third in the female division.
Laser: Adam Gillies was second again, with Nick Bailey fifth. Nick was third in the Masters division, with Jeff DeJean 4th in the Masters.

Full results are at:http://pcyc.net/index.cfm?ID=629

Before I leave this behind, I want to add that there is probably no better way to get in your volunteer hours than signing up to help at this event.  Molly should never have to beg to get people for these two regattas.  The kids are great, the event is well organized and it is energizing to see so many young sailors.  Besides, PCYC is always a big help to us when we host an event.

Next up is of course, LYRA.  It isn't too late if you haven't registered already.

Visit http://abyc.on.ca/lyra2014/.

That's all for this week.

Steerers/Four Sisters Regattas

We had 2 regattas, back to back, at PCYC this weekend, which made for a long, hard days.  Considering the cold and chop on Thursday, no wind on Friday, rain on Saturday and fog on Sunday, the Optis on Alpha course had the best racing they could have, thanks to the people who worked so hard to make it happen.  A HUGE shout out to:

RO: Paul Brennan
Committee Boat: Rebecca Crumlish, Liz McIntyre, Marjolyn Van der Hart, Linda Gouge, Susan Hogan, Nancy Wilson, Eleanor MacKay
Pin/Mark Boats: Stan Gap, Vlad Ignjatevic, Colin Andrews, Jeff De Jean, Dave Steenbergen, Ken McAlpine, Dan Gregory, Stuart Gibbons

 Well done, everyone. Thank you.

Family Race and Bell Buoy

In my haste to get the word out last week about LYRA, I forgot to acknowledge the people who had run these two races.  I apologize for that and many thanks to:

Paul McDonald, Karen Albert, Linda Gouge, Brian Chapman and Paul Brennan

 ...and speaking of LYRA

It's coming up fast, folks and I'm still far short of the people I need to cover all events.  I need 2 or 3 hour shifts of 2 people to record finishes for the following:

Freeman Cup -  Sat. July 26 starting late Saturday night/Sunday morning  and  overnight

Centennial Cup - Monday, July 28   This race begins in Youngstown and finishes at ABYC. We'll need people on station, starting late afternoon and into the evening

Founders Cup - Thursday, July 31 - This distance race starts at ABYC at 11:00 am and finishes at ABYC. I need committee boat people for the start and finish (not necessarily the same people)

Course Racing - Friday. Aug. 1 to Sunday, Aug. 3
Yes, I know it's a holiday weekend and I'm not happy about it either, BUT...it is happening and I need help to pull it off.  I need committee and mark boat people for all 3 days and would rather not spend the next week pulling my hair out, so if you can help, PLEASE let me know asap.

Eagerly awaiting your "yes, I can",

Thanks,

ABYC was well represented at Steerers' and Four Sisters regattas.  The senior team arrived at Port Credit Yacht Club to compete in Steerers' on Thursday July 17th - with all members of the team putting forth an excellent effort.  Congratulations to Adam Gillies who finished 2nd overall in Laser Full Rig fleet, just missing first by a single point.

A solid performance from Jackson Forster and Tyrus Sherk who added to their regatta experience in the Laser Full Rig class.  As well, a great performance by Quinten Beelik who finished 8th overall in Radial fleet, this was his first regatta in the boat switching over from the Opti fleet.  Ainsley Doell also competed in Radial class, finishing above mid fleet, putting forth a valiant effort. On the double-handed course the senior team was represented in both the 29er and 420 class.  Sam Bonin and Chloe Carr were sitting 3rd in the 29er fleet after the first day of racing - unfortunately they were unable to hold onto a podium position and finished 4th overall.  Also competing in the 29er class were Thomas Kidd and Rowland Goddard who showed great improvement and the start of what could be a great duo, competing in their first regatta in the boat.  Competing in the 420 fleet were

Photos - Alison Wardman/Mary Claire Kartner

Sarah Christensen and Zoe Sherar who finished top 20 out of 60+ boats, showing a great ability for racing.

With the end of Steerers', the team's focus shifted to the Four Sisters regatta.  All racers, once again,  showed promising things for the future of ABYC.  Congratulations to Adam Gillies earning another spot on the podium in the Laser Full Rig fleet, finishing 2nd overall.  Also congratulations to Sam Bonin and Chloe Carr for earning a spot on the podium with a 3rd place finish in the 29er fleet.

The CANsail 3 & 4 sailors also got the chance to experience Steerers' Regatta - some of them for the first time.  ABYC had exceptional overall finishes from all the sailors.  Ryan Brownsdon and Cameron Harbaruik who came in 22nd in the Club 420 fleet.  Another outstanding finish was from Jack Randle and William Bonin who placed 3rd overall in the white sail fleet.

Congratulations to all the sailors who participated!

Last Thursday and Friday, 10 members of the Junior Race Team went to Port Credit Yacht Club to

Photos - Ken Evans/Alison Wardman

participate in the Steerers' regatta.  The first day of the regatta consisted of 8 knots of wind and big waves, which enabled the fleet to sail three races.  On Friday, the wind was very light and shifty so the race committee was unable to start any races.  Annabel Gravely was the top ABYC sailor, placing 7th overall out of 37 boats and was the 3rd. female. Nathan Latka was 3rd. in white fleet, aged 10 and under and Aidan Massey-Garrison was 5th. in green fleet, for beginner racers, out of 25 boats.

Over the weekend, 15 of ABYC's Junior Racers competed on the Optimist course at Four Sisters regatta.  Four races were completed on Saturday, with winds starting fairly light and building to 8 knots. On Sunday the fleet got a late start due to heavy fog and was only able to fit in one race due to the extremely light wind.  Congratulations to Martin Staadecker, our top ABYC sailor who placed 8th. overall out of 35 boats, and to Oliver van Rossem who won the award for 2nd. place Blue Fleet out of 17 sailors, aged 11 to 12.  Also, a big thanks is in order to the Race Committee, from ABYC, for running a smooth regatta and to PCYC for being great hosts. We are looking forward to our next competition, YODE, at RCYC.
