Mary Pappas

Mary Pappas, aged 54, died peacefully on July 4th, 2014 surrounded by her loving family after a courageous struggle with cancer. Beloved wife of Chris; loving mother of Allysa and Evan. Daughter of Helen and the late Spas Markoff; and big-sister to Nick and John Markoff.

Mary's spark for life always took her on new adventures. Passionate about the outdoors and travel, Mary embraced new experiences like skiing the Alps and motorcycling across Italy. Most recently, she became an avid sailor as part of Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club in Toronto. There she gained many new, life-long friends, and explored the Greek Islands, the Bahamas, BVIs as well as the many ports around Lake Ontario. Her passion for life and generous nature will be greatly missed by all those she touched.

Special thanks to Dr. Danny Kornhauser for being not only a wonderful doctor but friend. Dr. Shuen of North York General Hospital, and the amazing staff at Princess Margaret Hospital for their attention and dedication, specifically Dr. Oza and Dr. Wilson.

To make a more lasting impact, we ask that in lieu of flowers you make a donation in Mary's name to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. For more information on how to make a donation see here:

Hypothermia in July?

Usually by July we see temperatures in the high teens or low 20s in the lake (well, at least in the top few feet). July 1st evening it was up to 20C on my instruments!

However, by Saturday it had fallen to 15, and Sunday it was down to 10.4.  A variety of changing winds has kept the lake mixed up more than usual and the warmer top layer isn't what we'd expect    As I write this on Monday morning, the Ajax buoy was reporting 12C.

Until things warm up, use a bit of extra caution while you're on the water; if you fall in, you may have more trouble than you expect treading water or climbing back aboard.

5 New Members on the Board?

For those of us who use the Gazebo a lot we have been watching these little guys growing up.  A pair of swallows thought it a great place to raise a family.  Hopefully they will be a little more mobile by the time LYRA starts.  Mom and Dad are getting a bit aggressive when people are around the kiddies.

LYRA
Speaking of LYRA it is quickly approaching. Course racing will start on Friday August 1 and run for three days.  I have posted on Job Jar if anyone has some time to help in the food and beverage with BBQ's, clean up et cetera.  Great way to get in some hours and have fun doing it.
Non-racing members are more than welcome to come down and enjoy the shore side LYRA activities.  During this event we will be using script on the patio, it will be available for purchase in the clubhouse.  As well LYRA regalia will be available shortly.

SUMMERFEST
This coming Saturday will be the July Family Fun Day.  Camille, Don and Debbie have a great day of fun planned and it looks like the weather gods will smile on us.  I would like to be able to attend this event but I will be doing the Lake Ontario 300.  Hopefully this year the wind gods will be kind to us...........

Have a great week and see ya at the club!

PCYC Cruise - Part II
_________________________________________

We had quite a turnout for the Canada Day long weekend - 39 boats joined us on the PCYC cruise.

On Saturday the weather cooperated and it turned out to be a wonderful sunny but comfortable day.  It was a nice sail for some with some assisted motoring and everyone reached our destination.  Although there were 3 incoming cruises we managed to reserve our usual BBQ location and set up our dining chairs very close to the playground for the kids and a comfortable spot for our 20 or so canine friends.  Artistic director Lyn, made sure that we had an appropriately festive Canada day setting.

We were just a little concerned about feeding the group - so along with Nancy our executive cruising chef, we were able to recruit the services of the ABYC kitchen who did a fabulous job in preparing and packaging some of the various dishes.  Harvey and David spent time over the hot BBQ's to round out the meal with freshly cooked pork tenderloin.  Thank you also to our guests who contributed some great hors d'oeuvres and desserts.  In all, your hosts David and Lyn, Nancy and Harvey entertained 106 enthusiastic ABYC members (88 adults and 18 kids).

PCYC as always continued to welcome us and offer us a great facility.  Some of the group entertained themselves with the club's fine dining and bar facilities while others enjoyed the pool (especially on the baking hot Sunday).  The surrounding area is also quite lovely.   We ventured out on our bikes in a westerly direction to Port Credit and beyond, ah-ing at some of the major mansions, discovering some incredible park lands, flower gardens, a concert in Port Credit and a great conservation area.

Many of us headed home on Monday after breakfast to have that one spare day and to avoid the forecasted stormy weather on Tuesday.

David and Lyn

The weather was perfect again for the PCYC Open Regatta this past weekend, but despite the weather, not many boats from ABYC were present.  Hopefully our Juniors will make a better show at the Fogh-Boorman Regatta at Royal Hamilton on the upcoming weekend.

Congratulations to Winston Beckett and the crew of Fortitude for winning THREE races and finishing 2nd overall in IRC 3.  Also in IRC 3, Mike Flynn and crew placed 6th.  Murray Gainer and the crew of Lively finished 7th overall in IRC 2.

In the Jib and main division, Consort, sailed by Martin Gibb and crew finished third overall.  In the J24 fleet, Black Swan placed 12th with Humidor 13th.

Full results can be found at http://www.lorc.org/Results2014/2014_Results.htm.

At the time of writing, no results for Sailfest Sarnia were available.

Don't forget - IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO REGISTER FOR LYRA at ABYC.  The Freeman will be sailed on the weekend of July 26 and 27th, with course racing taking place August 1, 2nd and 3rd.  A large number of both PHRF and IRC boats are expected to participate in the course racing (you don't have to do both).

Register at http://abyc.on.ca/lyra2014/.

That's all for this week.

Race Committee Help Needed

We have a couple events coming up that could use some RC help:

Sun. July 13   Summer Bell Buoy

I need committee boat crew for this one.

Thurs., July 17 - Sun., July 20    Steerers/Fours Sisters Regattas, PCYC

Thursday & Friday - calling all retirees... URGENT - I need 2 drivers/mark layers for the mark boats .
I could also use a couple of people for the committee boat, preferably the same person for both days, but I'd happily take 1 person for each day

Saturday & Sunday - URGENT -  I need 1 driver/mark layer and 2 helpers.
Another person for the committee boat would be nice, too.

As always, please let me know ASAP if you can/will help and also as always, only  those signing up need reply.

Thanks,

Senior Race Team at Sarnia Sailfest

______________________________________________________________________________________

This past weekend the ABYC Senior Race team competed in their first major regatta of the summer season,  Sarnia Sailfest.  All racers put in an excellent effort- Ainsley Doell raced in the radial fleet while Tyrus Sherk and Adam Gilles raced in the full rig fleet.

Sarnia's strong current and high winds, lasting the weekend, made for difficult conditions.  The difficult conditions brought a high level of racing and skilled competitors.  Adam Gilles and Ainsley Doell both placed in the top half of their fleets, and Tyrus Sherk put in a great effort and displayed a positive attitude towards the racing world while gaining valuable regatta experience.

Congratulations to all racers, a great start to the summer season!  Results will be made available in the coming days at the sites listed below;
