Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation
- S2S Editors
______________________________________________________________________________________

On Saturday June 28th, all subscribers to Ship2Shore received an email message asking them to confirm their email address so that they will continue to receive Ship2Shore.  This was due to a new law that came into effect July 1, 2014.  Simply put, the law requires organizations that send mass emails to have the consent of its email recipients to do that.  The new law is an attempt to limit the amount of SPAM that people receive.

By clicking on the "Yes, continue sending me emails" button, you are providing that consent to ABYC to continue sending Ship2Shore to your email address.

In the past we have received many requests to add a new email address to our recipients list.  We can no longer do that.  From now on, you must go to the ABYC Website and subscribe.  This is done on the first page of the website - scroll down, on the right side.  When you subscribe, you will receive a confirmation email from Constant Contact asking you to reconfirm your address.

If you deleted the email from June 28th. without confirming your email address, you will be removed from the Ship2Shore mailing list at some point in the future.  When that happens, you will have to subscribe again if you want to receive Ship2Shore.

We are available to answer questions or provide assistance regarding this matter.  You can reach us at s2seditors@gmail.com.

Race Committee - LYRA

LYRA  week is fast approaching and it's time to get our Race Committee ducks in a row.  I have deliberately held off on this one, because I've learned the hard way, that our membership does not like to commit too far in advance.  But now it's time, so here goes -

The week will consist of various long distance feeder races leading up to the 3 day weekend of course racing.  Here is what I need:

Sat., July 26   Freeman Cup - START

This will be a 65 mile and 100 mile race, starting at 12:00 noon.  I will need committee boat crew for this one.

Sun., July 27  Freeman Cup - FINISH

"July 27" could mean any time after midnight on the 26th.  Wind and weather will determine finishing times but we will need people in place over a several hour span to cover it - probably crews of 2, for 2 or 3 hour shifts, stationed on the Sarah Ashbridge at the finish line.  Specific times will be decided closer to the date.  We will also need people to ferry the crews back and forth.

So, if sitting at anchor on the Sarah Ashbridge in the dead of night is your idea of a fun time...

Mon., July 28   Centennial Cup - FINISH

This race begins in Youngstown at 11:00 am and finishes at ABYC later that day.  Same deal as the Freeman - we'll need crews of 2 on the Sarah to record finishes, probably beginning mid to late afternoon.

Thurs., July 31  Founders Cup - START & FINISH

This is a distance race that begins and finishes at ABYC.  Start time is 11:00 am, so we'll need committee boat crew to start the race and crews of 2 in place to record finishes, starting mid to late afternoon.

Fri. Aug. 1 - Sun., Aug. 3 , (Holiday Weekend) -  COURSE RACING

If everyone who has signed up stays signed up, we're not in bad shape  for the committee boat - 1 or 2  more people per day would be nice.  What I do need is mark boat drivers/mark setters and helpers for all 3 days.

This is a major event and I really don't want to be scrambling at the last minute, so please consider helping out and let me know ASAP if you can.

This Canada Day long weekend, 4 ABYC Opti Racers competed in the annual LSSA (Lake Sailing Skiff Association) Regatta, hosted at the Oakville Yacht Squadron.  We were blessed with warm summer weather both days, with a thermal filling in mid-day providing good racing conditions, with winds of around 8 knots.  The Optimist fleet was divided into Blue fleet for sailors aged 10-12 with 6 sailors, and Red (13 and up) with 10 competitors.  Five races were sailed over the weekend.

Martin Staadecker and Timothy Morland represented ABYC in the Red Fleet finishing 7th and 8th respectively.  Congratulations to Paul Staadecker, who was racing in the Blue Fleet, on his 2nd place score.  The sailors learned the importance of quick sail control and balance adjustments around marks, and what a difference a few seconds can make with close competition.  Congratulations is also in order to Kate Evans on her 4th place in the Blue Fleet - this is the first time she has raced outside of the green fleet, and she proved herself to be ready for the challenge!

We have two weeks of intense training ahead of us.  We will be focusing primarily on perfecting our boat handling in preparation for the next regatta, Fogh Boorman in Hamilton.
