Clubhouse now open

The release of today's edition of Ship2Shore was delayed so that we could inform our members of the re-opening of our clubhouse.  That decision to re-open could not be made until it was certain that the repairs to the water main would hold.  The repair process has been one of difficulties and frustrations due to having to deal with 3 different breaks in the pipe.  As soon as a repair was completed, another break would occur.

Finally everything seems to be holding and we can now announce that the clubhouse is open.

Thank you for your patience.

Preparing for 2014-15 Sea Wall Rebuilding Impacts our Haulout Programs and Plans:

Today, I am announcing the postponement of the Mast Up Storage program for 2014-15.  We have taken this decision in order to allow those members who wish to store mast up the time to find alternative arrangements and to allow our Yard Coordinators time to reconfigure the fall storage.  We will do out best to accommodate all member boats should they wish to store mast down in 2014-15.  Members should let the club know of their plans for fall haulout as soon they have decided.

It was a difficult decision for the Board given that the Mast Up trial program provided a helpful service to those members interested in this service.  As one member put it to me yesterday when he was given advanced notice "I have stepped my last mast".

After reviewing the priority needs for Sea Wall rebuilding, the board decided in the interest of safety and storage optimization, that the club will not be able to continue the Mast Up storage trial program during the major Sea Wall rebuilding.  The need to address the repairs urgently needed along White Wall will necessitate significant yard storage changes for 2014-15.  Anthony Mirvish our Crane Yard Coordinator who has planned the boat spacing for many years now and worked closely with those leading the trial program provided those members who have stored mast up with a more detailed explanation of the challenges he now faces planning haulout and storage.

Once the Sea Walls that are high priority have been rebuilt then we will reconsider the mast up storage program.  I want to thank Roy Little and those members working on Mast Up storage for the past two years.  They wanted to continue to program on a trial basis.  We have learned a lot through the trial program thanks to the members who have participated.

Yours,

Is your boat Shipshape?

We're in the latter half of June and some of our vessels are still not ready for use.  I've heard complaints from members and observed it first-hand.  It's a shame in our short season and it lends an air of neglect to our facility, which so many of our members spend so much time on keeping clean and well maintained.

Board Policy 7.15a (Harbour Management, General) prescribes that:

A member may be called before the Board for explanation if:
(i) his/her vessel is not in operable and seaworthy condition;
(ii) his/her vessel is in an unfinished state without approval, in the opinion of the Committee; or
(iii) his/her vessel is in dead storage in the Club, without permission.
The Board may deal with each situation as it deems appropriate.

In the first week of July, our Vice-Commodore Marine and I will be conducting a tour of the docks and contacting members whose vessels are not ready for use.  If you know your vessel needs attention, please send an email to rearcom@abyc.on.ca with your plans for remedying the situation.

Please do your part to keep ABYC looking its best!

Staff Announcement

After four years of service to the club, Bar Supervisor Albert Philpot has left us to pursue other opportunities in the food and beverage industry.  Albert had a great rapport with the membership and I am sorry to see him leave.  We all wish him well in his future endeavors.  Being promoted to the position of Bar Supervisor is Katie Haynes.  Katie will take over the same responsibilities as Albert was well as having a more active role in attracting and running outside functions.  Welcome aboard Katie!

This past weekend was certainly a challenge for the club.  It never fails that catastrophe will strike on a Friday, and on a Friday of a beautiful weekend.  With the water main break we were forced to shut down the clubhouse in the interest of health and safety to the members.  I know this was a major inconvenience to you the members and I thank you for your understanding.

Member Cards

I ask that the members start bringing their membership cards with them to the bar in the next week.  After working out some bugs we should be going live with the card readers by Friday.  You will only have to use it to open your tab, not every time you order a drink or food.  If you are sending your tab to the office for billing, please check that it is correct.  If you do not put a tip on it the office will put on a 15% before tax gratuity on your account.  If you wish to leave a different amount please write on the bill.

See ya at the club!

Nomination Committee:  Focus on the Board -
Vice Commodore - Financial Services

As the weather improves and we find ourselves out on the water enjoying the long awaited summer days let's not forget to take the time to focus on the future leadership at the ABYC board level.  Your nomination committee will outline the role of each board position up for election this year continuing with the Vice Commodore - Financial Services.  We encourage you to reach out to those who held these positions in the past for their personal thoughts and experiences.

Past...and Present Vice Commodores - Financial Services (to name a few): Axel Noriega, Giles Osborne, Brian Neysmith, Thanos Kaponeridis and Ron Clark

Vice-Commodore - Financial Services

a)     Oversee all financial transactions, as approved by the Board;

b)     Oversee the proper accounting records of all monies received and paid;

c)     Report at each regular meeting, or when requested by the Commodore, on the financial status of the Club and present monthly statements;

d)     Present to membership, the annual audited statements and table a motion for the selection of the Auditor for the following fiscal period at a General Meeting

e)     Furnish such security as required;

f)      Furnish statements to the Club Internal Auditor;

g)     Establish and appoint a Finance Committee;

h)     Submit all financial returns to Governments as required by law;

i)      Establish accounting systems and methods and oversee the revision and maintenance of such computerized systems including the audit of their integrity;

j)      Establish and manage the process for the annual operating budget preparation and fee setting, including the provision for capital expenditure;

k)     Administer the policies with regard to delinquent accounts and those members requesting special terms for settling their accounts;

l)      Recommend policies and measures for the collection of aged accounts;

m)   Conduct quarterly analysis of Actual and planned revenues and expenditures and make appropriate adjustments.

Q & A: Up close and personal with those who have held the position of Vice Commodore - Financial Services in the past.

What are the challenges of this role?

The largest challenge that this role has is its scope.  It is about the details. It's about the big picture.  It is about every operation.  It is about having eyes everywhere and understanding all aspects of the operation, as some members would expect.  It is about having full knowledge and understanding of where every cent (or nickel) ends.  If this was a full time job, all of these would be possible.  It is a lot of hard work and it takes a lot of your personal time.   As a volunteer with many other responsibilities, it is about prioritizing and making sure that we have the controls and mechanisms to abide to our governance duties.

It is challenging to review and comment on the operating results and follow up with appropriate board members on major deviations or planned changes during the year.

What are the rewards of this role?

The largest reward, at least for me, is the feeling of contribution and belonging to a group of outstanding individuals (board and members).  Each small job has its own sense of accomplishment.  I do thank the Finance Committee for their support and for having a full ear to bounce off different ideas.  I also thank them for their support in ensuring that our projects get done. Coming together has been one of my biggest rewards.

If you are prepared to give the time and want to participate this is certainly the way to go.

Would you recommend taking the Vice Commodore - Financial Services postion at ABYC?

Yes.  I believe this role requires both qualitative and quantitative skills.  Quantitative skills are those hard skills to ensure that the technical part of the job is taken care of: to understand the financial needs of the club and the membership (two different aspects).  The qualitative component (soft skills) is to be able to influence decisions and ideas, and at the same time to ensure that you build a team (Finance Committee) that will support you.

This position can result in a lot of personal satisfaction from knowing that you have participated in and contributed to the financial planning and operation of a very good club.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to run for this position?

My biggest advice is to build bridges with your peers and colleagues in the club.  I do not think that only one person can do the job. Having the ability to think outside of the box in this role goes a long way.  You should have a basic understanding of accounting principles for Not for Profit Corporations and the ability to organize and summarize the preparation and compilation of the annual budget.

Next Focus on the board will outline to position of Vice Commodore - Marine Services

Cruise to PCYC

Saturday, June 28 to Monday, June 30

(Photo from a past year at PCYC, courtesy of David Studholme)

The "sort of" July long weekend cruise is going to Port Credit Yacht Club on Saturday June 28 to Monday June 30 with an option to stay until Tuesday July 1.  There will be no charge for the third night if you stay Monday night.

We have 41 boats signed up for the cruise and sign-up is now closed.  If you wish to be added, you will need to try to make your own arrangements with PCYC for a dock and we cannot guarantee sufficient food for you.

There will not be a skippers meeting on Saturday morning.  Many members will tend to leave between 10AM and 11AM and we monitor VHF Channel 16.

You will be sent your dock assignments by email once they have been provided by PCYC.  As a courtesy and for your convenience, please hail PCYC on channel 68 when you are arriving to confirm your dock has not changed.

We provide dinner beginning around 6pm.  By tradition many of us gather beforehand around 5:00pm to share some appetizers that you bring.  A few people bring deserts.  With close to 100 people attending you might want to consider bringing your favourite lawn chair.  It is expected you will bring plates, cutlery and glasses.

Port Credit YC has a pool which many of our members like to enjoy and we always have a great turnout.

There is no special theme this year. Y ou might consider some red and white in your colours since it is close to Canada Day.

Hosts are: David Cloutier & Lyn de Souza (Minerve) - desouza-cloutier@sympatico.ca and Nancy Ogden & Harvey Harman (Sail La Vie).

Water Main Breaks
______________________________________

So why does it take so long to repair a water main break?  In the case of ABYC, the pipes that are in the ground are 35+ years old and made of older material that is crumbling.

ABYC Sr. member Brian Cunningham who is doing the repairs has had to deal with recurring breaks in this pipe.  The first break occurred on Friday and by the time Brian got his equipment to the site, located the leak and dug the hole to access this leak, it was late Saturday.  The first repair was completed on Sunday and within minutes a new break occurred and the hole filled with water (see photo below).   When these breaks happen, the city has to be called in to shut-off the water and then the water in the hole has to be pumped out  - all very time consuming.  This happened again on Monday but finally, after the third repair was completed on Tuesday, no more breaks happened.

So the next time you see Brian (Drainman), be sure to thank him for his hard work.  He deserves it.

After a break in the pipe, water fills the hole and runs throughout the east side yard
Thanks for caring!

We were fortunate to have some timely rain during the past couple of days so that our grass areas and our many flower baskets were properly watered.  Also, some of our members as well as Yard Staff were seen watering the flowers with water from the bay.  When you're desperate you use what is available.

I want to thank the members and Yard Staff who gave that extra effort to ensure that our plants survived during the period of no water due to the water main break.

The weather was spectacular for the RCYC Open Regatta, and ABYC boats represented us well, especially in the Dinghy fleet.  RCYC is the only club that includes dinghies and Juniors in their Open Regatta; kind of a throwback to the old days of the Metro Yacht Racing Council (MYRC).

In IRC  2, Murray and Winnie Gainer's Lively placed third overall, while Winston Beckett and the Fortitude crew placed second in IRC 3, while Michael and Pat Flynn and crew were able to get Starwatch back on the race course to finish 7th.

Adam Gillies finished FIRST in the Laser class, ahead of 7th place finisher and teammate Tyrus Sherk.

BIG congratulations to Shawn Gershman who placed first in three races in the Radial fleet and managed Third overall despite being black flagged in one of the races and having to count 18 points as a result as there were no drops.

On the Delta Course, Sarah Christensen and her crew placed fifth in the 420 fleet just ahead of teammates Rowland Goddard and crew.

Paul Staadecker was the top ABYC finisher overall in the Opti fleet with an 8th place finish but was FIRST in the Blue fleet. Quinten Beelik  was 8th in the Red Fleet (9th  Overall) and brother Martin was 9th  (10th overall).

Hunter Dejean, only recently having moved up from the Green fleet, finished 15th overall and 13th in Red, with Jack Peabody 17th (12th in Red).  Sacha Anderson placed 24th, 14th in Red.

In the Green Fleet, Petra Fischer's favorite junior Danny Assimakopoulos placed SECOND in the 21 boat fleet, followed by Taylor Knoll (THIRD), Annabel Gravely and Kate Evans in 4th and 5th places respectively, with 7th to 9th going to Matthew Laffey, Paul Wortmann and Caoimhe Laffey.  Wyatt Small was 12th, while Davis Dejean ws 13th, Connor Roggekamp 15th, Aidan Massey-Garrison 17th Connor Hill 19th and Amy Glennie 20th, all in their first event.  Well done all!

Full results can be found at http://www.lorc.org/Results2014/2014_Results.htm.

Next events include the Canadian Laser Masters Championships at EYC this weekend, followed by the PCYC Open on the 5th and 6th of July.

Senior & Junior Race Teams at RCYC
- Linor Berezin and Mike Goldfarb, Coaches
______________________________________________________________________________________

Over the weekend, members of the Junior and Senior Race Team attended the RCYC Open Regatta.  The sailors were faced with challenging conditions throughout the entire regatta, including extremely light and shifty winds.   A record 23 boats attending from the ABYC Junior Club totalled one more than the number of boats from RCYC's Junior Club; perhaps next year the junior component of the regatta will be called the ABYC Open!

The senior team, which races in both singlehanded and doublehanded boats had two 420s at the regatta, all of whom are new to the boat and were excited to compete in their first regatta.  Rowland Goddard and Thomas Kidd had a great day on Saturday, finishing with a 3rd in their best race.  Zoe Sherar and Sarah Christensen sailed very well on Sunday, consistently finishing mid-fleet.

Also from the Senior Team, Adam Gillies had a fantastic regatta, finishing first in the Laser fleet, and Tyrus Sherk posted an excellent 5th place in his first Laser event.  Former ABYC Senior Race Team member Shawn Gerhman was 3rd in the Laser Radial fleet.

Our Junior Race Team sails Optimists; this was their 2nd regatta of the season.  The top ABYC boat was Paul Staadecker, one of the youngest members of the team.  Paul came 8th out of 27 boats and won his age category in the Blue Fleet.  Quinten Beelik was close behind him in 9th overall.  Quinten sailed excellently on Saturday, consistently placing top 8 with two 3rd place finishes, though he ended the regatta getting blackflagged twice on Sunday, showing that he's not afraid to be aggressive on a very rowdy starting line.   Martin Staadecker earned the Optimist Championship Fleet Prince of Wales flag when he won the first race of the regatta, and carded a 10th overall. Hunter Dejean finished 15th overall, and was the 2nd place girl in tie breaker with the first place female.  Jack Peabody finished in 17th overall.  New to the championship fleet, Sacha Adamson had an excellent regatta, finishing 24th overall, and placed mid-fleet in two races.  Finally, Tim Moreland of EYC was 4th overall - Tim trained with the ABYC team this spring as his own club doesn't have a spring program.

The Opti Green Course consists of beginner racers, and ABYC's growing Green Fleet team made up almost 2/3 of the fleet.  Nine year old Danny Assimakopoulos had an amazing regatta with some of his best sailing yet.  Danny finished 2nd overall with two bullets in the regatta.  Taylor Knoll also had a very strong regatta finishing 3rd overall.  Annie Gravely kickstarted her first regatta by winning the first race on day 1, earning her a flag as winner of the Prince of Wales race for Green Fleet.  In the first race of the 2nd day her teammate Kate Evans won the Governor General's Race earning another flag for the team.  Annie and Kate were also 1st and 2nd female. Matthew Laffey, Paul Wortmann, Caoimhe Laffey, Wyatt Small, Davis Dejean, Connor Roggekamp, Aidan Massey-Garrison, Connor Hill and Amy Glennie also represented ABYC, sailing really well..

We will be sending a small team of Optimists to LSSA in Oakville next weekend, and the Learn To Sail program starts on June 30, so expect to see all aspects of the Junior Club in action starting next Monday.   Race teams are full for the season but there are still a few spots open in the learn to sail program; these sessions run either two weeks or a month for the more advanced sailors.

I seem to have the hardest time finding people to cover our club races, which makes no sense to me at all.  We should be particularly supportive of our  own events, so please let me know if you are interested in helping with either or both of these.  And don't forget  - Race Committee time counts toward your mandatory hours and can be logged in the Job Jar.

We are looking for people to help run the Wednesday night dinghy races.  A few people have offered to help but as it is a long season, more people will lighten the load.  No experience is necessary as training can be provided.

The wings and cold beer always taste better after the racing.

If you are able to help out for some of the season please email me at grant@torbridge.ca.  We started June 4th. and finish in September.

This past weekend Etobicoke Yacht Club hosted the one day WOW - Women on the Water Regatta.

This regatta is a casual affair where the point is to have fun and gain experience.  No protests will be heard, and the rules are loosely interpreted.  The point is to have women plays roles on their sailboats in which they might have limited experience, for example, as skipper, helmswomen, or tactician.

ABYC has entered at least one boat each year of the WOW's existence.  This year we were represented by "Jester" skippered by Barb Baniuk.

In very light air and 3 races later "Jester" finished middle of the pack, 8 of 15.  Although we believe that "Spirit of Adventure" was placed 15th having never left the dock, since she was only in attendance as a sleeping boat.

Pictured is the crew in the "Skippers' Plan" shirts won for placing 2nd in last year's regatta and provided courtesy of Petra Fischer.  Petra was on hand at the regatta again this year representing Skippers' Plan sponsorship (and informally hearing protests).
