Nomination Committee:  Focus on the Board -  Rear Commodore

The Provincial election has wrapped up and now it is time to focus on the future leadership at the ABYC Board level.  Your Nomination Committee will outline the role of each board position up for election this year starting with the Rear Commodore.  We encourage you to reach out to those who held these positions in the past for their personal thoughts and experiences.

Past...and Present Rear Commodores (to name a few):  Paul Brennan, Pat Flynn, David Steenbergen, Julie Hughes, Jim Allen, Ed Wilson

1.03 Rear Commodore (Updated: Aug. 12, 2013):

a) appoint Chairs of the Sailing and Cruising Committees, the Adult Keelboat, Co-op, and Boat Maintenance coordinators, as well as coordinators or Committee Chairs as may from time to time be required for the on-the-water activities of the club

b) appoint the Director of the Sailing School

c) work with the Committee Chairs to assist them to plan, organize, and supervise the on-the-water activities of the Club and to recruit their Committees;

d) ensure that racing equipment and club boats, with their equipment, are maintained in good condition;

e) ensure representation at appropriate racing/cruising groups on behalf of the Club;

f) serve, ex-officio, as a member of the Committees of part a);

g) liaise with Club Manager re: on-the-water activities; and,

h) liaise with the Club Manager regarding Staff issues related to the Sailing School operations.

Q & A: Up close and personal with those who have held the position of Rear Commodore in the past.

What are the challenges of this role?

·         Juggling the needs of all our members and trying to give them the best programs we can given our resource  constraints.

·         A lot of hard work, some of it time critical (when an event is scheduled, we can't just put it off!).

·         Every program in the portfolio is operational, the programs are all delivered in the sailing season, and the buck stops with you when anything goes amiss.

What are the rewards of this role?

·         You can build, buy, do tangible things - equipment, events, marketing, public relations - this is NOT an admin/HR/policy job.

·         Meeting people who take the Adult Learn to Sail and then become active in the club.

·         Interacting with the club racing fleet, taking pride in our racing program, reputation of ABYC for regattas and race management.

·         Contributing to the success of a top-notch Junior Program & management of the club.

·         Seeing our Juniors out on the water, at ABYC or elsewhere.  They are the future of our sport, and I suspect many will become leaders in our society.

Would you recommend taking the Rear Commodore postion at ABYC?

·         Yes, if you can deal with the hard work and sometimes urgent requests, the rewards are well worth it.  You will learn more about your club, and what it's really about ... getting out on the water!

·         Yes, best job by far in any sailing club

·         Yes, if you're passionate about SAILING and the importance of the Club Sailing Programs (racing, cruising, adult and junior learn-to-sail, co-op)

·         Yes,  if you're willing to do a lot of work all year round, including during the sailing season.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to run for this position?

·         Have a clear vision as to what really makes a Sailing Club, don't be afraid to look outside ABYC for successful solutions; be creative, outspoken, entertaining and engaging.

·         Get good people to help you and try to stay out of their way ... I rely on my Committee Chairs, and without them we'd have no programs at all.

·         Your job is to help your committee chairs get the work done.

·         Make sure Committee Chairs are continuing or succession is already in place, do the same for your successor.

·         One area that past Rear Commodores have struggled with is maintenance of the club boats.  It's very difficult to get a volunteer to take ownership of this.

Let's start talking.... On the docks, around the BBQs, and at the picnic tables.  Please contact anyone of your friendly Nomination Committee members if you have any interest running for our Board.  Not ready yet?  Try volunteering for one of the key committees reporting to that position.

Next Focus on the board will outline to position of Vice Commodore, Financial Services

Sail Plan
______________________________________________________________________________________

Going to be away on your boat overnight?  Be sure to file your Sail Plan.  With our full harbour, this is vital to assist our staff in welcoming visitors to our club.  Filing a Sail Plan is also required by Club bylaw.  These forms are available and filed at the gas dock.  The logging of your destination and time of return is for security purposes, and allows visitors to use the empty slip you have vacated.

Cruise to PCYC

Saturday, June 28 to Monday, June 30

(Photo from a past year at PCYC, courtesy of David Studholme)

The "sort of" July long weekend cruise is going to Port Credit Yacht Club on Saturday June 28 to Monday June 30 with an option to stay until Tuesday July 1.  There will be no charge for the third night if you stay Monday night.

To assist with cruise planning, the sign up sheet includes a column for attendees to include which day they wish to return to ABYC (i.e. Sunday, Monday or Tuesday).   If you have already signed up, but did not include this information please update the sign up sheet in the club house or email us

at: desouza-cloutier@sympatico.ca

Since ABYC has a 'full harbour', this is a 'boat for boat' exchange. PCYC will have more boats signed up than ABYC will be able to accommodate so it is very important that your cruise status is up to date (on the sign up sheet, or by email as above) no later than Tuesday night, June 24.   This will allow the opportunity for as many PCYC boats as possible to visit our club and to let them know how long that they can stay.  We are hoping that we will be able to obtain pre-arranged slip assignments for ABYC boats.

Port Credit has a pool which many of our members like to enjoy and we always have a great turnout.

There is no special theme this year.  We will provide a BBQ meal on Saturday evening (Pork tenderloin, salad, rice).  You might consider some red and white in your colours since it is close to Canada Day.

If you are coming by "Land Yacht" please sign up on the sheet so we can plan meals for proper numbers.

Hosts are: David Cloutier & Lyn de Souza, (Minerve) , Nancy Ogden & Harvey Harman (Sail La Vie).

Look for more details in next week's S2S on June 25.

Retiring to B.C.
______________________________________________________________________

ABYC members said goodbye to Associate Member Harvey Swanson this week.  Harvey and his wife Alison are retiring to Vancouver Island.  Although Harvey joined as an Associate Member and was not required to work contribution hours, he nevertheless did a lot of work for the Green Dock extension as well as other projects around ABYC.  At the 2013 New Year's Levee, Harvey was awarded the Rolly McKillop Trophy for volunteer Services to ABYC.

His work ethic as well as his friendly demeanor will be missed by his friends around ABYC and we wish him and Alison a long, happy retirement.

Cormorants joining ABYC?

Last year, we had several Cormorants hanging out in the trees in Bay Belle Park.  Unfortunately this year their numbers have increased as can be seen in the photo (16 when we took this photo).

We have all seen the damage that these pesky birds can do to trees and wonder what, if anything, can be done to dissuade these invaders from moving in permanently.  According to a recent article in the Toronto Star, in the early '90s, there were 6 nesting pairs in the Headland area, today there are over 11,000 pairs.
Bench needs Refinishing

Following the Hugh Wyers memorial last Sunday, Hugh's two sons, Brian and Rob delivered Lillian's bench back to our Club.  Hugh always took it home over the winter to be refinished but for the last two winters was unable to complete the work.  It was explained to the sons that we have mandatory contribution hours now and that refinishing the bench would be the type of job that many members would look for in order to get in their time.

The bench is in its usual location on the patio; it is of quite an ornate style of construction and anyone looking for an opportunity to complete some contribution hours should find it a good challenging job.  Members who remember Hugh and Lil will also find the job emotionally rewarding.

We are looking for people to help run the Wednesday night dinghy races.  A few people have offered to help but as it is a long season, more people will lighten the load.  No experience is necessary as training can be provided.

The wings and cold beer always taste better after the racing.

If you are able to help out for some of the season please email me at grant@torbridge.ca.  We started June 4th. and finish in September.

Last weekend the National Yacht Club once again hosted the Toronto Area Hospice Regatta. Approximately $25,000 was raised for the Dorothy Ley Hospice.

Only one boat from ABYC participated, but they did so in grand style!   Bart Smit and his crew (David Holmes, Chris Reil and Pascal Desrosiers) raced Nautical Symphony to a strong first place finish in the J80/J70 division. Congratulations to Bart and crew!

Next up is the RCYC Open this coming weekend. The last weekend in June features the Laser Master Canadian Championships at Etobicoke Yacht Club. We'll have to see what our Wednesday night laser racers can do.

That's all for this week.

Last week we included a link to the results of the Single and Double Handed races held on
Sunday, June 8.  Unfortunately, the link did not work properly so we are including it again this week.

It gives us great pleasure, to announce that ABYC members, David Holmes and Mike Hren, have answered the call to represent our club, in the first running of the Toronto Bay Ideal 18 Invitational Regatta, July 26th 2014.

With even greater pleasure, Susan Bosley of Skinny Legs has stepped in to cover their entrance fee. This is a tremendous showing of support and the assistance is very much appreciated.

Should you see David or Mike please pass on your best wishes.  A healthy nudge to Susan would also be most appropriate.
