Although the very light wind conditions made it more of a "Motor Past", it didn't really matter to most members.  The weather was fantastic and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

ABYC Sail Past 2014 - Thank you all

What an amazing weekend "home at ABYC" was.  We kicked the weekend off with the Commodore's Ball on Friday evening.  The clubhouse was appropriately decorated and the sound of a Harp (Susan Vinovich)  greeted everyone.  As I made my way around the tables to say hello during the dinner people were complimenting the food and service.  The traditional toasts were spiced with some humour.  As they say, the band played on and everyone danced.  The next morning we all awoke to brilliant sunshine and light breezes.  Sean McKenzie, our piper, led the parade of officers to open the Sail Past ceremonies.  Leigh Olson, our Fleet Chaplain, gave the fleet blessing and together we all sang "'O Canada".  Then it was off to our boats and a gentle sail as the fleet paraded past Sarah Ashbridge.  Our fleet looked very impressive, both in numbers and in how the boats and crews presented them.  As Commodore it was an honour to salute each boat that passed.

Upon return, it was the Flag Officers' turn to parade amongst the boats now dressed for show and fun. Together with our driver Dan Kirkley, Sean McKenzie, our piper, SRVC Elizabeth Sloss and Rear Commodore Paul Brennan, we maneuvered throughout the harbour coaxing members to give money for the Corinthian Fund and food & drink for our crew.  I am thrilled to report that members and guests gave over $1,300.  We even harassed the skipper and crew of Slip Stream while still under sail just outside the harbour.  Thanks to everyone for being such great sports and making the afternoon pure fun for everyone.  As the afternoon progressed to the sounds of the steel drum band people arrived to see who would receive prizes and honourable mention for their efforts.  I am happy to report that Bill Logie (Bones), Bob Brew (Anon Brew) and Elaine Parker (Lady Alice) were the winners.

On Sunday the rain held off until late in the afternoon and the New Boat Owners Party was well attended. The level of participation by our members and guests was tremendous.  I salute those new boat owners who participated.

In summary, each event seemed to have something special so that when you put it all together it became a memorable weekend.  It takes the involvement of many people to plan and execute a weekend like this one beginning with my wife, Pat.  Thank you to all.  Also, I sincerely appreciated the messages from members who unfortunately had obligations or other plans.  All I can say is get this weekend in your calendar early so you won't miss the fun next year!

Sail Past
_____________________________

The ABYC members and guests who attended this year's Sail Past will have something special to remember - one of the best weather days for Sail Past that we have had in many years.

The official portion of Sail Past began with the blessing of the fleet by Leigh Olsen, Fleet Chaplain.  This was followed by the presentation of burgees and the always moving flag raising ceremony.

Warm temperature and glorious sunshine from morning to night; along with a light to no breeze, forced most skippers to "Motor Past".  This didn't matter to most of us, however Commodore Bob Hedley and his party spent approximately 2 hours watching the parade of boats go by.

Once the lake portion of the day was over, our Flag Officers did the annual harbour tour and with a goal of raising at least $1,000. for the Corinthian Fund, they came back on shore with $1,350.  Well done to all our members who gave so generously!

Prizes were awarded for various categories and a delicious BBQ was put on by Chef Paul and his very capable staff.

All-in-All, A GREAT DAY!

New Boat Owners DID
Come Out ABYC Style!

Although a forbidding weather forecast added considerable drama, that didn't stop our boat owners from hosting a fantastic afternoon of food, cocktails and entertainment at the ABYC New Boat Owners' Party last Sunday.  More than 20 new owners participated, delighting people with the extent of their generosity and creativity.  The competition was extremely tough but members voted, and here are the results:

Best Dressed Crew
Meshuggana (G079) - Allen Lewis
(Included an old-fashioned popcorn maker)

Best
Cocktail
Crime Scene (B58) - Paul-Angus Bark
(Ginger and tequila-infused jalapeno margarita)

Best Dressed/Decorated Family Boat
OhEhOh (RC3) - Sandra Strangemore and Jordan Rock
(Mexican theme with a piņata)

Best Decorations

Tiramisu (R56) - Margaret and Simon Cooper
(Mexican theme with a Mariachi Band)

Attendees also voted (verbally) to add more categories next year to properly acknowledge the broad range of talents of ABYC boat owners.  New categories will include Best Appetizer and Best Entertainment.  Although it wasn't an official voting category this year, Johnny's Cabana (GB8) - John Scherlowski, received many kudos for the appetizers that were served.

Thanks to all the new boat owners that participated, to the members that turned out and to our event volunteers: Celia Lum, Elaine Johnson, Elaine Parker and Beverley Howell.

Natasha Brahmachari, Das Bolt (G95) and Sandra Conley, Windover (R76)

Finally the sailing season has been launched and we can enjoy hopefully warm weather and kind winds. Like our Club and myself, you and your gardens have probably lost many plants, shrubs and trees due to this disgusting last winter.  Our grounds suffered many losses and it will be years before we have the kind of cover that we had become accustomed to.  All of the gardening pros I have spoken to have said just wait!  That seems pretty crazy as most of the brown plantings look dead to me.  There are obvious fatalities like the first cedar near the white dock by the mast and the cedar I removed from our planter by the front gate. These will be or have been removed or replaced.  There is a 'Rose of Sharon' on the west side of the clubhouse that MAY come back, but due to an over indulgent member, it probably will not.

I have made a list of some of the obvious areas to be attended to in the Job Jar, as well as some areas that could use some new soil, which has been delivered and is laying on the west side of our grounds near the entrance to the Belle Bay Point.

Weeding is an ongoing project, so on your way to your boat or just coming into the Club house, please keep an eye out for anything in need and if every member just pulled one weed, we would be on a winning streak!  Watering to is a concern, many of our planters seem to get over looked, so please feel free to add water when necessary.

I would like to thank the many hands that have helped so far in the plantings and cleaning of our grounds, including Mike and Lynda Robertson, Liz Heron, Nancy Ogden, Trixie Hoyer, Lise Carrier and many more.

If there is any area of concern, please feel free to contact me via the Club.

So enjoy the season and fair winds.
Sincere Thank You

Many thanks to the member who recovered my two camera tripods from the dinghy area steel driving test last week and safely put them in the Lost and Found area.  A much appreciated action.

It was a lot colder out there than we expected, but at least the rain held off until we got back in.  I had a hard time getting RC personnel for this one, leaving us short handed on the committee boat so I'm that much more appreciative of those who did volunteer:

Tom Shenstone (RO), Robin Anderson and Eleanor MacKay (mark boat) and Helen Phillips, who came from Highland Yacht Club to give us a hand.  Despite freezing fingers, radios that didn't work and a timer/sound signaler (that would be me) who fired a gun that should have been a horn, we got a race off. Well done, guys.

Now...I'm still looking for 2 mark boat helpers for  Saturday, June 21, for the RCYC Open Regatta.  It's coming up fast and I'd really like to know well in advance that I have a full crew, so please let me know asap if you can help with this one.
