ABYC Sail Past

Sail Past is only a few days away and I wish to invite all of you to take part.  Once again our theme of Sail Past is "At Home on the Water" and that means come and enjoy life at the Club as well as your boat.

This is one event that weather doesn't stop.  We will, however, be considerate of the sea conditions and belay the sailing if weather and sea aren't cooperative.  Otherwise though everything goes as planned.

The day begins in the Clubhouse with a Breakfast Buffet from 8:30 to 11:30 am and I know that Chef Paul has a great selection of food for us.  After breakfast you'll have time to gather your crew and prepare your boat for Sail Past.  Don't forget there are prizes for the most decorated boats and crews.  This is also a good time to purchase your tickets for the BBQ and draw that will be held later in the day.

Listen for the sounds of the piper which will signal it's time to gather on and around the main patio area.

At 12 noon, the official Opening Ceremonies will take place with some presentations, the flag-raising ceremony, and instructions from Rear Commodore Paul Brennan for the carrying out the Fleet Review itself.  A really fun part of the day is the Flag Officers' harbour tour and we ask that all vessels return to the dock by 15:00 to dress ship and socialize on the docks.  A tradition that has developed over the past number of years has been the collecting of funds for the Sailing School during that harbour tour.  We will continue with that tradition and I'm hoping that we can break the fund-raising record of last year where we almost raised $1,000.  Your contributions are appreciated.

From 4:00 to 7:00, the fun continues with a Steel Band Island Dance Party and BBQ, including face-painting, games at the Flagpole, and a balloon artist.  At 4:30 pm, back on the patio, we ask that all skippers and crews gather for the Sail Past category prizes that will include:

Most co-ordinated crew (clothing or actions)

                        Most dapper skipper

Best dressed vessel and the loudest salute to the Flag Officers in the Harbour

                        Cutest, youngest, most mature, etc.

Tickets are available from 10:30 to the start of the Review of the Fleet, and proceeds will go toward the Corinthian Fund.  Remember, you have to be on the patio at 4:30 to win.

Don't forget to buy your tickets for the BBQ at the bar in the club house from 4:00 to 7:00 presented by Chef Paul.

Sail Past will be a great event with good food, excellent entertainment, and continued support for our Club's events, and I extend my thanks to the Entertainment Committee that has worked so hard to make it a success.

The rest is up to you as members.  Come...Celebrate!  I will see you there.

I have been working away behind the scenes on some of the organizational stuff at our club and there is something that I would like to bring to everyone's attention.  While we are all members of the club and our membership is what pays our staff, we as individuals are not employers.  It is important to remember this because it is very easy for any one of us to believe that because it is our club that we should be able to give instructions or advice or suggestions to any one of our staff.

It is way easier for everyone concerned if you bring anything that you would like to raise with a staff member into the office.  Rennie is our Manager and it is up to him to manage the staff.  It is critical that we all give him the opportunity to do that and it makes it much easier for our staff if all direction comes from our management.  So I would appreciate it if you could do your best to raise concerns, suggestions or comments about staff function with Rennie rather than with the staff member in question.   It will make my job lots easier.

Memorial Service for Hugh Wyers

Place:  Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club (ABYC)
Time:  2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Sunday, June 15, 2014

We wish to celebrate the life and love of Hugh Wyers, where the Wyers' family spent the happiest of times; many years of sailing, cruising, racing and socializing.

Many friends were made in these years, an intimate web of diverse people with a common goal - to spread the joy of sailing through camaraderie.

Please come and join us; raise a toast to Hugh, who has gone to visit a vast array of sailing friends who have gone before him.

If you have a story to tell, please tell it!
If you have a toast, toast it!

Seawall Pile Driving Testing Underway
- S2S Editors
_____________________________________________

As most of our members know by now, we have a problem with rusting seawalls that need to be attended to in the very near future.  Some of the wall in the Dry Sail area was replaced over the winter but there is much more to do.

Roger Marsh and his committee have arranged for several tests of equipment that could potentially be used to rebuild the walls and the first test was performed last Thursday in the Dinghy area.  The result was very impressive - minimal effort is required, 3 men can do the job (once the preparation work is complete).  We witnessed 3 sheets being driven and by the 3rd one, the operators had the time down to less than 6 minutes per sheet including getting the sheet from its storage area.

We made a 6 minute video of a portion of the test (driving sheet #3) that can be viewed at the following link:

Don't forget ABYC Regalia

Racing and cruising are well underway but don't forget to take a look at the regalia that we have on display in the case located in Duffy's.  You can also see our catalog on the ABYC Website.

Our long sleeve and short sleeve dry fit shirts make great layering options when it's cool out on the water.

Sail Past Dress-up
_____________________________________________________________________________________

As Commodore Hedley said in his article, Sail Past prizes are awarded for various categories including best dressed crew/Skipper or boat.  This seems to be an appropriate time to provide a great example from the past of dressing/coordinating a crew.

As can be seen in the photograph below, late Life Member Hugh Wyers had imaginative costumes for the crew of Kaila for one of our Sail Pasts.

Thanks to David Gilbert for providing the photograph.

The Challenges of Weeknight Race Committee

Last Thursday night, the regular RC assembled as usual.  Everything was ready to go, except, as it turned out, Sarah.  Two things had gone wrong (why do such things tend to travel in pairs?); a breaker had tripped on the outlet the boat was plugged into, AND the battery switch was left on "Both" with a few odd things running, leading to the start button producing only muted clunking sounds.

As fast as possible,  jumper cables were commandeered and the Robert Humphrey was brought over in an attempt to assist the now labouring battery charger; but there was not enough juice from the big outboard to boost a D8 battery and turn the huge diesel on the Sarah.

The Race Committee was then directed to "grab what you need and get your butts onto the Jack Cameron".  We left the dock 7 minutes later, with flags, poles, number boards, horns, clipboards, life jackets, and, of course, snacks.  The wind forecast wasn't good, but our Race Committee does NOT like to be late!

We did get to the course with 4 minutes to spare ... just in time to postpone.  Not ones to quit, we then teased the wind gods ... we opened up the snacks (6 people in an open boat laying a buffet).   It was then we realized that we'd forgotten a key piece of RC equipment...

Fortunately, SI #18 speaks about Race Committee Duties, and with some careful interpretation of the rule, we convinced Captain Gillespie on Isogon that loaning the RC equipment was covered by the rule, and that a cheese knife was important equipment for the running of a  race.  He most graciously produced a cheese knife, and threw in a cutting board out of the goodness of his heart.

Snacks proceeded, and after some discussion between the RO and Don Macintyre, IRO, we agreed that giving cheese and crackers to a competitor was not providing an advantage, and returned the knife and laden cheese board to Isogon.

After 25 minutes, we discovered that in addition to a cheese knife,  we'd forgotten the November and Alpha flags.  We lowered the AP, and sent a final radio message to the fleet suggesting that they visualize the aforesaid flags hoisted, and we headed back to shore.

Better wind next time!

Friday evening saw the start of the Susan Hood Race, hosted by Port Credit Yacht Club.  It is one of the few overnight races left on the Lake Ontario racing calendar.  There are those, like my spouse, Nick, who swore off doing it ever again years ago.  To quote Nick, there is little worse than being becalmed off Burlington at 3 am when the Lake temperature is still in double digits.

The good news for those who sailed in the 2014 Susan Hood is that they were becalmed off Burlington at 3 pm and the sun was shining.  The bad news is that it took more than 24 hours for most of the boats to finish.  Congratulations to all those who had the stamina to stick it out.

Looking at the results, it is clear that this was one long distance race that actually favoured the smaller boats.  Imagine sailing for somewhere around 22 hours, then sailing into a giant hole as you approach the finish line.  You sit and watch the entire fleet of boats around you catch up.  Of course, when the wind finally picked up, it left you with no chance to save your time on the slower boats.

ABYC was represented by Murray Gainer and the crew of Lively, who were third in division and 8th overall in IRC.  Hammertime II, sailed by Pasquale Leone and crew were fifth in their division, and Graham Toms and the crew of The Cat Came Back were 9th.  Larry Harrison in Merlin M2 and his crew decided at some point that enough was enough, and headed home, as did Calum Semple and the crew of Sona.  The latter was sailing in the double-handed division.

Follow the link for race results:  2014 Susan Hood Trophy Race

ABYC Dinghy racing starts tonight.  There is no racing this weekend coming so everyone can participate in Sailpast.  Next up is the Hospice Regatta at National Yacht Club followed by the RCYC Open Regatta the following weekend (June 21-22).  Let's hope these bright sunshiny weekends continue.

And don't forget that the Opti Racing program is looking for donations for their auction.  If you are able to help out these very junior sailors, please contact Mike Goldfarb (mikeg@ajsportsworld.com).

See you at Sailpast.

Correction to last week's Article
- Emily Nicoll, Championship Fleet Coach
______________________________________________________________________

Last week's article regarding ABYC's Championship Fleet Optimist sailors competing in Hamilton contained some inaccurate information.

The article should have stated that Sacha Adamson placed 24th overall...which was a great achievement as she just recently transitioned from Green to Championship Fleet.
