Goodbye to Stephen Trevitt
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Although the Tuesday night race was cancelled due to weather (surprise!), a large crowd stayed in the clubhouse to say goodbye to departing Senior Member Stephen Trevitt who is leaving us for greener pastures.

Many good things were said about Stephen although it probably wasn't necessary - his many deeds speak for themselves.  Stephen leaves very large shoes to fill,  both for his racing prowess as well as his club contributions and he will be missed.

Hugh Wyers
______________________________________________________________________

Hugh, loving father and uncle passed Saturday, May 17, 2014, age 90.  Hugh was a kind, calm and considerate man, always with decorum, manners, dry English humour an easy smile and well loved by family & friends.  He has gone to meet Mom on the boat in heaven.  May fair winds and sun be with you all of your days.

Memorial service will be held mid June.

New space for Members' Dinghies
- Paul Lefnesky, Harbourmaster
___________________________________________

You may have noticed that one of the new floating rafts is located on White Wall in front of the club house.  This is a newly established area for member dinghies.  If you don't want to leave your tender at your slip you can use this area to store it.

The dock in front of the red patio area is reserved for Sailing School dinghies and the harbour boats should be tied near the Pile Driver to keep them out of the way.

Watch your speed!

Dear members, I have been contacted by the Parks Superintendent regarding cars from ABYC speeding through their parking lot.  They have asked that we slow it down as they have had complaints from the general public as well as their staff.

Many Thanks

MARJORIE PATTERSON

MARJORIE PATTERSON December 29, 1929 - May 18, 2014
Predeceased by her parents, Alice Mary Patterson (née Bull) and Thomas Cragg Patterson, both originally of England. Beloved and cherished by her common-law husband of 28 years, Rick London. Sorely missed by her "sister" from early teens, Edna Jackson. Marjorie was a major presence in Toronto area yacht race management for over 30 years. Interclub racing through CYRA and MYRC, later LORC, brought her to many of the clubs where she gained a reputation of being, "tough, but fair". Although she always paid her dues to Boulevard Club (her home club), Marjorie was honoured with memberships in many clubs because of her involvement in their racing programs. Four clubs never forgot her; Island Yacht Club, Queen City Yacht Club, National Yacht Club and Royal Canadian Yacht Club. Marjorie was also involved with the committee which organized the Canada I Luncheon. Everyone involved enjoyed themselves so much, in spite of all the hard work, they decided to do it again, thus the Spring Thaw Luncheon was born, sponsored by Berly and Derek Tidd. The group raised thousands for various charities including Toronto Brigantine and OSA's BOOM program. She treasured her involvement with the Shellback Club of Toronto. For more than a decade she was First Mate of the club, helping to make it run properly; organizing annual dinners, writing and mailing newsletters, looking after the badges, etc. She always said, "It's easy to do nice things for nice people", and that sentiment extended to just about everyone she met in the sailing community. This past while, Marjorie wouldn't have been able to carry on at home without help from CCAC. She never wanted to go to hospital, or anywhere else that might be able to take better care of her. Through VHA, they provided personal care workers that were exemplary. Always cheerful and competent, never dour, her needs were taken care of with compassion and a sense of fun. Although they are all wonderful, Sharon McLean and Eugenia Romero are two PSWs who epitomize the best of their profession. For medical needs while at home, Dr. Harvey Pasternak (Marjorie's family doctor) and nurse Margaret Salata of ParaMed, saw to Marjorie's well-being. Without their continued monitoring and ministrations, Marjorie would not have fared so well for so long. Thank you, all of you. Marjorie was forced to go to Toronto Western Hospital Emergency about 10 days before she died because of multiple serious problems. In spite of the seriousness of her illness, they were able to stabilize her enough to get her upstairs to acute care. There, the wonderful staff further managed to improve her health to the point they were considering her eventual discharge. Alas, it was not to be. Shortly before breakfast, Sunday, she quietly slipped away with Rick by her side. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial date to be published later. Please consider a charity of your choice in remembrance.

AHOY NEW BOAT OWNERS!

______________________________________________________________

All new (2013 and 2014) boat owners are invited sign up to be host boats in the ABYC New Boat Owners' Party on Sail Past Weekend:

Sunday, June 8, 2014
2:00 pm to 5:00 pm

This is a fun-filled, time-honoured tradition at our club!

How does it work?
As a registered host, you can simply invite members onto your boat for a tour and refreshments and/or you may want to do something more elaborate involving decorations, costumes, themes and games. It doesn't matter whether you offer chips, dip and pop or host a full-scale luau, the point of this event is to have a lot of fun and get to know more ABYC members.  Prizes (gift certificates from the Rigging Shoppe) will be awarded for the Best-Dressed Crew; Best Decorations; Best-Dressed/Decorated Family Boat and Best Cocktail.

Depending on the number and location of boats that participate, we will stagger hosting times, for example, boats on: Red Dock - 2 to 3 pm.; Green Dock -3 to 4 pm; Blue Dock - 4 to 5 pm. We will keep you posted, once we know who is registered.

If you have any questions, just send us an email or give us a call.  Please let us know if we can sign you up!

Happy Sails!

Have Your Flares Expired?
_____________________________________________________________

If your flares have a manufacture date of 2010 or earlier they have or will expire this year.  You can't light them, throw them in the water or in your household garbage.

Disposing of expired flares has been an ongoing dilemma for boaters across the country.  To help boaters dispose of expired flares in a safe and environmentally responsible manner CPS-ECP and selected CIL Dealers are hosting Safety Equipment Education and Flare Disposal Days. On these days, you will be offered the opportunity to learn about required safety equipment and you can bring your outdated flares to be properly disposed of, free of charge.

In Toronto, expired flares can be dropped off at:
The Rigging Shoppe
, 44 Midwest Rd. Toronto, Ont.

Friday, May 30, 2014 - 5:00pm - 8:00pm

Saturday, May 31, 2014 - 9:00am - 5:00pm

ABYC hosted our annual One Design and LORC Open Regatta on the weekend, and despite the appalling weather we have had in the last six months, the sun gods shone upon us and we even had wind as well as sunshine and no fog.

ABYC boats fared very well. In IRC2, Stephen Trevitt sailed Crime Scene to second place in his final race before leaving us.  He received a well-deserved standing ovation at the presentations, as he will be missed not only by the ABYC racing fraternity, but also by all of those who have raced against him in interclub racing over the years.  But even more than the outstanding racing record Steve has achieved while racing under the ABYC burgee, Steve will be missed by all members of ABYC for his outstanding volunteer service, including rebuilding of the seawalls every winter.  On a personal note, I will miss sharing a pint or two with Steve, and all of us who had the pleasure of sailing with him will miss his mild manner and welcoming smile.

Murray Gainer and the Lively crew were fifth, and Larry Harrison and the Merlin2 crew were sixth, also in IRC2.

Sona, sailed by Calum Semple, dominated the IRC 3 fleet, with five firsts, a second and a fourth place finish.  Congratulations to the the Sona team!

On Bravo course, Eli Gershman and his crew aboard Black Swan managed an 8th place in the J24 fleet. Also competing were Eriks Kalvins in Black Pearl, Tim Connolly in Humidor and Wes Shera and the crew of Excalibur.

The T-Bird fleet was small, but competitive, with only 7 points separating first from last.  Congratulations to David Holmes and the Rattle ya Dags crew for eking out a one point victory over Looney Tunes with the last hurrah for Drew Robertson and the Full On team taking third place.  Although the PHRF Jib and main fleet was won by a boat from another club, Martin Gibb and the Constor team were second with Hazel Wood and Dan Gregory third in Satori.

All in all, we were blessed with great weather, excellent race committee work and another successfully organized Regatta by Roger van Vlack.  A big shout out of thanks to all the volunteers who made the weekend so special.

For full regatta results, follow the link:  ABYC Regatta and select Course A, B or C.

On the Victoria Day weekend, the brave (and foolish!) raced in the TS&CC Icebreaker.  Linor Berezin and her new partner finished third in the 29er fleet while Shawn Gershman finished a very respectable 12th in the Laser Radial Fleet.  ABYC provided Race Committee volunteers on a chilly mark boat as well as the judges.  Meanwhile in the Netherland, ABYC's Matt Sherar raced in the Laser fleet.

Keep posted for the Opti fundraising events to be held throughout the summer.  The program has been so successful that new equipment is needed. Remember, Opti sailors are the future of the club!  Currently we are looking for donations to the fundraising auction to be held later this summer.  If you or your company have an item that could be auctioned, please let me know at wendy.loat@bell.net.

That's all for this week.

Race Committee

The first two events that required RC volunteers happened this weekend - The TS&CC Ice Breaker Regatta, to which we sent a mark boat and crew on Saturday and Sunday and the George Coyles Tune-up on Sunday.

A HUGE shout out to the folks who gave up their time to help out:

Jim Prall and Eleanor MacKay who went to TS&CC
The Robertsons - Mike, Lynda and Briar and Shane O'Dowd Rutherford, who took care of things for the Ceorge Goyles.

It is always  extremely difficult to find volunteers on holiday weekends and it was stupidly cold out there, so I am doubly grateful to you all for pitching in.  Well done.

A Great Start to the Season

- Emily Nicoll, Championship Fleet Coach

__________________________________________________________________

This weekend, ABYC's Championship Fleet Optimist sailors ventured out to the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club to compete in the Lilac Festival Regatta.  This was the team's first regatta of the season and we were fortunate that the wind conditions were exactly those that we had been practicing in this spring - light winds, around 6-8 knots.  As a bonus it was a warm, sunny weekend!  As always, the RHYC race committee ran a great regatta and made us feel very welcome.

This event was the first qualifying Opti regatta for the Ontario Sailing Grand Prix Development Series, in which the athletes' cumulative performance throughout the season is scored against all participating Ontario sailors.

The team's main goals for this regatta included focusing on their boat speed by adjusting their sail controls while racing.  By the end of the regatta the sailors were much more confident reaching forward and tuning their sprit pole tension and boom vang mid-race, especially around the marks.  In addition, the sailors worked on being more aggressive on the start line.  We also identified the areas that we need to work on over the coming weekends.

The teams' hard work led to some admirable results.  Quinten Beelik was the top ABYC sailor, placing 5th. overall, out of 28 competitors.  In addition, Oliver van Rossem won the award for 1st.  Blue Fleet and Paul Staadecker was close behind in 3rd. Blue Fleet. Timothy Morland and Hunter Dejean were both in the top half overall.  Martin Staadecker had a commendable 17th., despite missing the first day of the regatta. Sacha Wilson placed 22nd. overall, which was a great achievement as she just recently transitioned from Green to Championship Fleet.

The team should be tremendously proud of their performance!  This was a great start to the season and I am looking forward to the continued success of our athletes.  They will be competing next at the RCYC Open Regatta on June 21st and 22nd.
