ABYC received the following from Alexandra Jonsson, widow of ABYC Senior Member John Hamilton who passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014.

Hamilton, John Glendenning

Heaven has just been made a better place. John shuffled off this mortal coil in his 73 year on May 14, 2014 in Toronto, ON.  Born to the late Phyllis and Glen Hamilton, Sept. 5, 1940 in Winnipeg, MB.  Much loved, he will be missed by his family and his countless friends.
John loved sailing, gardening, tinkering and most importantly creating much laughter for those who knew him well.  Everyone has a story about John.

John spent his entire working  career in the insurance industry.  Most recently he retired from HIROC where he held the job of his dreams for six years.  What a legacy.

Funeral services will be held at St. Aidan's Church, 70 Silver Birch Ave. Toronto,ON. Friday May 23, 2014 at 3.00 p.m.

Should friends desire, donations may be made in John's name to St Aidans Church or to Myeloma Canada << www.myelomacanada.ca>>.

Those we love don't go away
They walk beside us every day.
Unseen, unheard but always near
Still loved, still missed and very dear

Cruise to CBYC
_____________________________________________________________________________________

The first "real" cruise of the season, to CBYC on May 17-19, was a wonderful success.  Despite the cold and unpredictable weather, more than 50 people on 21 boats made their way to the Bluffs and shared a spaghetti dinner prepared by co-hosts Diane Schulman and Peter Woodall (Saratoga) and Tina and Danno Heimann (Solitude).  In fact, dinner was so good on Saturday, it was repeated on Sunday!  (Leftovers were distributed....)

Although the weather both Saturday and Sunday was cold and rainy, the skies cleared and the sun shined just in time for dinner both days.  Great planning!!

Photos - Danno Heimann

Cruisers were pleased to welcome new members Judy and Mitch Wine and their dog Jesse (Away), Patrizaia and Victor Schulthesis and their children Letizia and Quirin (Jolly Rog), and Jen and Fred Braches (Double Dutch).

We, as usual, thank CBYC for their hospitality and all their help to make our cruises to their club such a pleasure.

Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club and Humber Sailing & Powerboating Centre are pleased to partner in offering a C.Y.A. Intermediate Cruising course at ABYC.  The content of the Intermediate Cruising Standard is extensive and includes items such as:

    • Cruise planning and preparation
    • Extended passage making
    • Making landfall
    • Dead reckoning
    • Chart work and entering unknown harbours

This course allows the student to apply the skills from their Basic Cruising, VHF, Coastal Navigation and Electronic Navigation experience in a live-aboard setting.  The five day course is designed to have fun, learn, vacation and gain valuable sailing experience.  This is all done on the beautiful waters of Lake Ontario.

AHOY "Nearly New" Boat Owners!
______________________________________________________________________________________

Did you get a new boat last year, but missed out on ABYC's New Boat Owners' Party?  It is not too late!  All new (2013 and 2014) boat owners are invited to sign up to be host boats in the ABYC New Boat Owners' Party on Sail Past Weekend:

Sunday, June 8, 2014
2:00 pm to 5:00 pm

This is a fun-filled, time-honoured tradition at our club!

How does it work?
As a registered host, you can simply invite members onto your boat for a tour and refreshments and/or you may want to do something more elaborate involving decorations, costumes, themes and games.  It doesn't matter whether you offer chips, dip and pop or host a full-scale luau, the point of this event is to have a lot of fun and get to know more ABYC members.  Prizes (gift certificates from the Rigging Shoppe) will be awarded for the Best-Dressed Crew; Best Decorations; Best-Dressed/Decorated Family Boat and Best Cocktail.

Depending on the number and location of boats that participate, we will stagger hosting times, for example, boats on: Red Dock - 2 to 3 pm.; Green Dock -3 to 4 pm; Blue Dock - 4 to 5 pm.  We will keep you posted, once we know who is registered.

If you have any questions, just send us an email or give us a call.  Please let us know if we can sign you up!

Happy Sails!

ABYC Goes South
(A.K.A The Chilifest)
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Members walked to the south wall and got a ride back, or they got a ride over and walked back to the club. They brought their kids, they brought their dogs, and they brought chili.  People piled on friends boats and about fifteen plus or minus hardy skippers left dock the Saturday after launch and travelled the distance to tie up or raft off at the South Wall.

While we have Prince Charles and Camilla to thank for the repairs to the wall their absence did not inhibit the revelry . It was anything but chilly.  What a glorious spring day, with nary a cloud in the sky.

The Chili Cook Off entrees were devoured by the 50 some people in the hungry shore party with all offerings being given 5 stars.  Special nods go to "Moonwind's" Don Jackson and his entry "Mexicali Rose" followed by "Grace's" Tom Warrilow and Stacey and their "Made at ABYC" special.  "Jaftica's" Don Sturgeon and Debbie Dockray took home the "It Ain't Chili" prize for their Jerk Chicken (yes, there were a few chickens harmed in the making of their recipe).

Very special thanks go to "C-Turtle's" Chris Kennedy who took over with late notice to run the show.

Toonie Thursday Wrap Up
- Jim Allen and Petra Fischer, Toonie Thursday Co-Chairs
_____________________________________________________________________________________

The 2013/2014 Winter Lecture Series concluded on Thursday May 8th when 35 eager members turned out on a chilly evening for a hands on Rig Tuning session lead by Sailing Chair Brian Chapman.  Those who attended agreed that it was worth standing around in the cold to learn how better to trim their rigs.

Over the course of the 7 lectures collections were taken and people were asked to donate a Toonie or more if they enjoyed the evening.

In total about 350 people attended the lectures and we were able to raise $690.15!

Thank you to everyone for your generous support.

The money was allocated as follows:

Canadian Wildlife Federation in support of the work of Damian Foxall our January speaker who serves as an Ambassador for CWF--$100

Junior Sailing Program-$295.07

Corinthian Fund--$595.08

The 2014/2015 Toonie Thursday lecture series will begin on the 2nd Thursday in November.  We look forward to seeing everybody in the fall.

Dry Sail Area Work
_______________________________________

Last Saturday a small group of dedicated ABYC members spent most of the day getting the Dry Sail area ready for the season.  The seawall was replaced over the winter and this week new decking was installed and grading done.  There is still a bit of work to be done, such as more grading, however it should soon be usable by ABYC's Dry Sailors.

Update - May 15th ABYC Crew Bank Night
- Rebecca Crumlish, Co-Coordinator Crew Bank Night
______________________________________________________________________________________

The purpose of ABYC Crew Bank Night was to match all sailors, racers, non-racers, cruisers, skippers and crew.  The evening began with registration - we welcomed 25 potential new associate crew members and most of them worked the room,, working on Skippers and joining their team for club night racing and day sailing, cruising.  From the 25 forms issued, 3 found a boat skipper.  The other 22 stated that they were racers (10), both racers and cruisers (9), and cruisers only (3).  A special thank you for the volunteer committee members - you made it happen!!!  Brian Chapman, Terry Fagan, Diane Schulman, Peter Woodall, Jim Allen, Deepak Mathur, Howard Franklin, Celia Lum, Scott Elliot, Trixi Hoyer, Molly Asseltine, Linda DeRusha, Susan Hogan and Nancy Wilson.  Also, special thank you to Rennie, Club Manager, Albert and staff for service, the PA System and the room set-up.

As Club race night begins Tuesday and Thursday, May 20th and 22nd, I would like to ask all skippers racing for your support and hope we can assign all potentially new crew associate members on racing boats and/or race committee - pending weather.  Skippers for non-racers sailing on Tuesday or Thursday evenings please check in with the Crew Bank in whiteboard Duffy's 5:15 pm until 6:00 pm for crew as this would be appreciated.  Tuesday evening John Chittley, Thursday evening Rebecca Crumlish.

Also, non-racing skippers for day sailing, weekends or cruising please signup on sheets in the Communications Room or send email for a match up for your requests.  Also, please sign up for online S2S articles for my Crew Bank updates.

FINAL EIGHT BALL POOL COMPETITION RESULTS

_____________________________________________________________________________________

As the cue dust has finally settled and the rankings, which may rankle some, have been established, the Golden Cue Award for 2014 goes to Peter "The Bat" Batson.

Peter, with his radar like technique, flew through his opponents with dexterity and humour, keeping his seven challengers (including his son) well "in hand".

The new placement of the pool table was appropriate, as it now sits outside the door to the Club kitchen. The end of a pool table opposite the rack is commonly known as "the kitchen".

Race Committee

The first two events that required RC volunteers happened this weekend - The TS&CC Ice Breaker Regatta, to which we sent a mark boat and crew on Saturday and Sunday and the George Coyles Tune-up on Sunday.

A HUGE shout out to the folks who gave up their time to help out:

Jim Prall and Eleanor MacKay who went to TS&CC
The Robertsons - Mike, Lynda and Briar and Shane O'Dowd Rutherford, who took care of things for the Ceorge Goyles.

It is always  extremely difficult to find volunteers on holiday weekends and it was stupidly cold out there, so I am doubly grateful to you all for pitching in.  Well done.

Your Sailing Committee has reviewed and are very hopeful our club will field a team (team consists of 2 individuals).  This is a wonderful opportunity not only for those participating, but our club (ABYC) ... we have deep roots in the sport of yacht racing, proudly.

Those interested, please forward you and your sailing partners (not necessarily collective) race record to "brian@uksailmakers.com" by end of May 2014.  Pending interest, contact will be made and further details on the selection process will be tabled.

Note, there is no age restriction and should a team of ABYC Junior Members wish to participate and be selected, your entrance fee will be covered by the Sailing Committee.

Please don't hesitate in contacting Brian with any questions.
