One more big push!
Calling all hands!  Your help is requested.  We have one week to go before the ABYC Regatta and we need to tidy up the dry sail area so that we can launch from that location.  This winter was a particularly hard one and did more damage, adding more scope to our maintenance projects.  Many people have worked very hard under tough conditions (though they are hardy fellows!) to fix the docks and the sea walls so far.  We need one more big push to complete all of the jobs (#reallybigpush for you twitter types).

Mike Leroux and team plan to work on Wednesday (today, if you are reading this now) to continue on the decking of the docks and get the remaining boats on the visitors docks into their slips.  Please come out if you can.

On Saturday, the plan is to concentrate on the dry sail area and replace the decking and fender boats. This is a pretty big job and we need everyone we can get to help out.

We do have other jobs if by some miracle we get a good turnout:
redeck the sailing school raft
put up the sign posts
put up the safety poles
yard & gardening
finish the bumpers on the sailing school

Let's all rally to help and get our club in shape for the ABYC Regatta.

ABYC Board Elections-Fall 2014
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Your nominating committee is looking for members who are interested in running for a Board position in the Club's upcoming Elections.  This year's available positions are as follows;

Rear Commodore

Vice Commodore, Financial Services

Vice Commodore, Marine Services

Per the Club's by-law 4.02 Qualification - Each director shall be:

(a) eighteen (18) or more years of age, and

(b) a Senior member or Life member of the Club.

No member shall be elected as Commodore or Senior Vice-Commodore or Rear Commodore unless such member has at least a third (1/3) interest in a boat enrolled in the Club Fleet.

In the next few Ship2Shore editions, your Nominating Committee will be highlighting one of the available board positions.  Included in the article will be a detailed description of the role's duties and responsibilities along with comments and advice from members who have previously enjoyed the positions.

If you are interested in learning more about running for the Board in the 2014 elections, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Nominating Committee.  If you are not ready to step into the board position, perhaps you'd be interesting in leading one of the Committees directly reporting to the position....We can help with introductions.

Side note:  If you are interested in learning more about the Nominating Committee or joining our team, please contact me anytime at [email protected]

Pile Driver Recovered
_____________________________________________________________________________________

As most of our members know, our Pile Driver mysteriously sank at the end of Red Dock several weeks ago.  The cause is still unknown however, it has now been recovered.

Recovery Barge Arrives  (Photo Peter Woodall)

_____________________________________

The actual recovery operation took place last Thursday morning.
The photos below show:

Photo 1 - The recovery barge approaching the Pile Driver which is laying on its side in approximately 16 feet of water.

Photo 2 - A diver using special breathing equipment is sent down to hook chains to the appropriate parts of the Pile Driver.

Photo 3 - After several hours of work, the Pile Driver is slowly raised to the surface

Photo 4 - Once the 2 open deck hatches are above the water, pumps are used to drain the water out of the compartments and the Pile Driver is floating again.

The Pile Driver is now resting in its usual place near the Mast Crane and efforts are being made to determine the cause of the sinking.

A short YouTube video of a portion of the recovery can be viewed by clicking on the link below.

The End of Rolling Starts

For many years we have started one division and at the same time given the warning signal for the following division.  On a busy Thursday night this saved 4 whole minutes!

However, it increased traffic near the start line, complicated the job of the race committee, and taught racers a practice no longer used at regattas.

Effective with the start of our 2014 season, we will discontinue rolling starts.  In most cases there will be a one minute period between a start and the subsequent warning signal, but a longer period is at the discretion of the race committee.

Good racing to all, and watch the flags!

We finally had weather on the weekend that reminded us all that the sailing season is well and truly upon us.

ABYC kicks off as usual with the George Coyles Tune-Up Race (or should we rename it the George Coyles Bundle-up Race this year?), on a new date, MONDAY, May 19.  The forecast is looking good, but be sure to be safe.  The water is still very cold.  If someone goes overboard they will not be able to self-rescue as the water temperature causes the muscles to lose their strength within about 30 seconds, unless they are wearing a wet suit, survival suit or dry suit.

Series A starts on Tuesday May 20 and Series B starts Thursday, all of which will be good practice for the ABYC Open Regatta on May 25 and 25th, particularly early this year due to calendar anomalies.  We have brought back White Sail and PHRF divisions for this event, so be sure to come out and support the Club's Regatta.  Register at www.lorc.org.

Of interest to anyone planning to cruise down to Kingston this summer is the "Modern Age of Sail" exhibit at the Great Lakes Marine Museum, one block east of KYC.  Nick and I were present at the opening of the exhibit, which features a large board thanking various supporters, including ABYC.  At the Gala Dinner, I found myself seated with Don Green, of Evergreen fame, Steve Killing and Rob Ball, designers, and various other luminaries.  George Cuthbertson of C&C Yachts and Bruce Kirby, another designer and well known sailor were inducted into the Hall of Fame.  I was totally fascinated by the stories and history of these very influential people in our world of sailing.  The exhibit has some fun and interactive displays for children, including one that teaches about weight distribution in design.  Be sure to stop in if you are in Kingston this summer.

That's it for this week. Sail safely!

Spring is here and the grass is starting to grow at Bay Belle Point.  All of the dinghies need to be moved to the dinghy area.  Please move your own and a couple of others.

I will be coming out some nights this week after work to move some and could use help.

Also mark all your equipment with your name and member number for identification.
