Another smooth launch is in the books!  In typical ABYC fashion, everyone came out for Saturday's launch and literally pulled their weight to get all our boats in the water.  Great job by everyone, especially the organizers for both yards!

After a very successful launch last weekend, there are a number of jobs that still need to be done around the club.  It is really important to tackle these right away, especially in the dry sail area and out at the end of red dock, so that we will be ready for the nice sailing weather (if or when it ever comes) and all boats will be in their slips ready for action.

In the Dry Sail Area
Finish the backfill and grading so that it's ready for decking.
Finish the wall cap and cut the tie-backs.

On the Docks
  1. Install bracing and fender board sections on White Wall between Green and Blue. (needed for Open Regatta)
  2. Cut 90 fender boards and bevel the top. (cut at 40" from 2x6 by 10' long boards. (Stock is in front of the sailing school)
  3. Deck and install fender boards on RD6,8 dock (once Allen has competed the welding)
  4. Flip the work raft, tighten the bolts holding float to frame and reinstall the boards removed to accomplish this.
  5. Install decking in the dry sail area (once Steve's crew has completed steel work - maybe next week)
  6. Install fender board panels on the dry sail wall.
  7. Finish decking/cleats on last floating dock and launch.
  8. Build new forms for concrete blocks.
  9. Finish installing the finger that was removed.
  10. Re-deck the finger that was removed.
  11. Install posts for safety equipment.
  12. Install dock signs.
  13. Install bumper cord on sailing school docks
In the Yard - lots of clean and gardening.  Soil is being delivered to the club and we need to move it around.

All hands on Deck!  It's time for the annual first cruise of the season:

From 14:00 - 16:00 on Saturday, May 10th , bring your boats (masts optional), grab your crock pots and put your taste buds to the test.  We had a great turn out last year, but we're always looking for more of the finest chili concoctions our ABYC chefs can muster.  Prizes are waiting to be awarded!

Witness the crowning of this year's Chili Champion by our panel of "Seasoned" Judges.

This event will be happening, rain or shine - although at the moment we are looking good for sunshine!  If the rain comes, check the bulletin board in the front lobby for Plan B details....

Just a reminder, this is a BYO beverage event.  Please eat and drink responsibly.

See you on the South Wall!

How much water?  Plenty!
______________________________________________________________________________________

As can be seen when looking at our bay, the water level has come up a lot in the past few weeks.  In case you need to see official proof, have a look at the NOAA produced graph of the water level at Oswego, NY as of May 6, 2014.  You can see that the water level rise is almost straight up (Blue line).  Compared to last year at the same time, the water level this year is quite a bit higher.  How long this lasts is anybody's guess although traditionally the level of Lake Ontario tends to top out around mid-June.

For all our sailors with deep draft boats, have a great summer!

CRUISE TO CATHEDRAL BLUFFS YACHT CLUB

MAY 17-19

Please join us for the first cruise of the season (not counting the long trek across our harbour to the South Wall of course!) to lovely Cathedral Bluffs Yacht Club.  This cruise is a great opportunity for all of us seasoned cruisers to get back together after the long winter and, since it is also the New Members' Cruise, to meet new members who are joining our cruising adventures.

CBYC is a lovely destination, not that far from home.  We will be serving up a great Italian dinner on Saturday night and since it is a long three-day weekend, there will be opportunities to get together for drinks and meals at the CBYC restaurant and to cook on your boat or use the BBQ facilities.

Please sign up on the sheet in communications room, or call Roxanne in the office.  We will be finalizing the cruise on Thursday, May 15.  Slips may be limited, so please sign up soon!!

Hope to see you there,

Diane Schulman and Peter Woodall (Saratoga)

Launch 2014 Was A Success

It is with the co-ordinated efforts of many teams and individuals that makes launch the success it is every year.  We safely launched most boats last weekend using the two cranes and the marine railway.  There are several boats still in the yard.  They are there because the harsh winter prevented the necessary repairs or because the boat is currently for sale.  The owners will be contacted to ensure that the boat will be out of the yard quickly.  This is the first year that I had the honour to oversee the entire launch operation and I have a new appreciation for the dedication and skill of those involved.

I would like to thank those that made both large and small contributions to the overall effort with a special Thank You to:

Crane Yard Chair - Anthony Mirvish

Rail Yard Chair - Dan Marcil

Harbour Master - Paul Lefneski

And thanks to Rennie Stobbs the Club Manager, Mike Kovacs the yard bosun, Yard staff, Kitchen staff, Serving staff and Bar staff.

Crane Launch Thank You
- Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chairman

Launch of the crane boats was successfully completed on Saturday.  The successful completion of launch depends on the efforts of all the crews and team leaders.  I would like to thank everyone on all of the crews for all of their hard work on a very long day, and in particular the following individuals:

John Moody for organizing all the crews, Roy Little for leading the small crane team and Neil Payne for doing likewise on the large crane, signalmen Joe Simpson, Bob Wilson, Stephen Trevitt, Paul McDonald (and Roy Little wearing two hats), Hydraulic Trailer crew chief Paul Brennan, dock foremen Alfie Nonnewitz, Terry Fagan, Doug Heldman and Stefan Cloer, cradle chiefs Kate Driscoll, Stewart Beak and Cam Hind, Equipment Managers Claude Michaud and Robert St. Hilaire, cradle disassembly foreman Jeff Dejean, Dock Ladies Coordinator Carolyn Weckesser and all of the Dock Ladies, Boat Rider Coordinator Rebecca Crumlish and all of the Boat Riders, the crew of Irish and the tow boats, Paul Lefneski, Rennie Stobbs and Mike Kovacs, and our tractor/forklift operators Chris Deeley and Bernie Caron.

Have a great sailing season,

Anthony

Please share my vote of gratitude to the members who worked diligently as part of the Dock Ladies Launch 2014 Team!

Our team is responsible for ensuring owners of crane yard boats are dockside when their boat is launched or called to the rail yard, liaising with the tow boats and boat riders if necessary, and then assisting the owners to secure their boat at the docks.  Yesterday's operations were made a little more challenging by the temporary docking locations during the harbour repairs, and the weather of course, but still this team's enthusiasm was never dampened!

Thanks to: Wendy Babcock, Alison Booz, Kathy Bouey, Cindy Boudah, Jennifer Braches, Debbie Dockray, Catherine Fagan, Winnie Gainer, Silvia Grava, Lyne Gringas, Joyce Guest, Sue Hamilton, Pat Hedley, Barbara Jones, Anne Judge, Maxine Lewis, Alison Liddell, Corinne Lusty, Teresa Magdanz, Margot Mitchell, Amanda Parsons, Elizabeth Qualben, Kelly Ryan, Cindy Sampson, Noreen Stumpf, Anne Swanston, Arlene Taylor, Mary Lu Taylor, Marjolyn van der Hart!

On behalf of the team, we wish everyone a safe and enjoyable season!

Thank you Rail Yard Gang

The boats are afloat and looking as lovely as ever.  The day was long and wet.  The effort and team work always amazes me.  From the top of the yard to the mast crane, we all worked our buns off.

John, Brian and Terry who run the Winch House, Thank you. To Rick and Gord for their expertise on Rail Car alignment, Thank you. Simon who took the lion's share of time calling Rope Crew that gave me the time to adjust to my new duties, Thank you. The Tallow Crew who's job so eases the amount of effort the pullers exert, Thank you. To all the people who kept a smile on your faces and pulled with a will, Thank You.  To Sue  and the gang at the mast crane, Thank you.  And of course Bruce Morrison who has been teaching, guiding and supporting me as I learn my new duties, Thank you Sir.

Last but not least, Roy Little, Stephen Trevitt and Anthony Mirvish with the Small Crane Crew who at the end of their duties moved over to rail-yard and worked til after 8 P.M. to move the last boat, Thank you.

Please join me in thanking our tireless "Ladies-in-White" of the Tallow Crew, who once again did such a marvellous job of keeping things sliding smoothly through the launch drizzle.

Kudos to Susan Hogan, Trixie Hoyer, Pat Chittley, Jean Gap and Eleanor MacKay.

Great work ladies.

If you thought it was a cold day on Saturday launching boats, our Racing Program was in action on the water, taking part in an Optimist clinic at RCYC.  Our entire spring championship fleet took part and though there were some cold fingers and toes at the conclusion of training on Saturday they all seemed to enjoy it. The program included fitness training, two days of sailing, including a 20 knot breeze on Sunday, as well as some guest athlete speakers.  Those that participated were: Martin and Paul Staadecker, Hunter Dejean, Quinten Beelik, Jack Peabody, Oliver van Rossem and Tim Morland.  Our green fleet was also busy, spending Sunday afternoon preparing their boats for spring training.

With the dinghy area's docks now in place, we will have 20 Optimists out on Sunday afternoons for our spring program, as well as the senior race team, which also starts next Sunday in lasers, 420's, and 29ers.  These keen sailors are all thankful that they now have docks to launch from.

As this year marks the fifth anniversary of the formation of the Optimist Junior Race Team, we have created a special high five logo to celebrate this milestone.  It was in 2010 that our Optimist Junior Race Team hired it's first Opti coach and had its inaugural team of 7 sailors; after Finley and Sophie McEwen took the first steps of creating the team in the fall of 2009.  The Optimist is the largest youth racing class in the world and has six continental championships, as well as an annual world championship.  Many of these motivated and enthusiastic Optimist sailors graduate to racing the laser radial, as well as the 420 and 29er, with great success.  We would like to thank everyone who has supported and contributed to the success of the team as it continues to flourish and grow.

I'm still looking for mark boat help on the holiday weekend.  I need a mark layer/driver and helper for the TSCC Ice Breaker on Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18.  Ideally, I would like the same people both days but, realizing it is the first long weekend of the season, I'll happily take different people each day.  TSCC shows up every year to help us with our Regatta and it would be SO not cool if we didn't give them a hand with theirs, so please don't let me down people.  There must be somebody out there who doesn't have wild and crazy plans for the weekend.

Eagerly awaiting those emails...

2014 Launch Race Registration (Duffy's lounge) / Mustang Survival Suit Silent Auction
Once again, the Sailing Committee's race registration desk was successful in getting our weekday club racers and weekend warriors to pre-register for the 2014 season.  This year, the Sailing Committee provided you with a RACE KIT which included a new Protest Flag, summary of the racing rules, sunglass croakies, sunglass cleaners, a signal flag decal and important information on upcoming events.  Warning:  gone are your excuses for not knowing the signals the RC is making or putting up an actual Protest flag, now those red hats can go back on your head.  Thank you UK Sailmakers (Toronto) and Skippers' Plan Insurance for the kits.

5 Racing Rules of Sailing books were donated by Skippers' Plan to be raffled off among those who entered.  Congratulations to ...Juris Altraks, Gus Gillespie, John Moody, Dave Steenbergen and EricDullerud. (Your book will be left in the office with your name on them.)

Congratulations to Cindy Sampson who outbid Drew Robertson for the 2 Piece Mustang Survival Suit. The Corinthian Fund is the recipient of $205.00.   Thank you to past Associate member, Joanne McBay for donating the suit.

Have a safe and fun boating season.
