With a not so wonderful weather forecast for the balance of the week, many people took advantage of what can be considered good weather over the weekend to get those last minute jobs completed.

We are nearing zero hour towards launch next Saturday.  There are still some dock maintenance jobs to do before launch (if possible!).  Mike Leroux is putting a team together for Thursday morning, although this will depend on the weather.  If you have some time and are able to come out and help, it would be really great to get these jobs out of the way before Saturday.  You can email Mike Leroux if you have questions or let him know you make it down to the club.

Mooring Tire Situation
_____________________________________________________________________________________

The 2014 Winter (and lack of Spring) has been hard on the docks and the mooring tires.  The Irish Rose has surveyed the harbour and it is safe to say that most tires moved during the winter.  We have moved any tires that were obviously out of place but there are likely many more.  We will start tire adjustments the WEEKEND AFTER LAUNCH when the boats are in the water.

A sign up sheet will be placed at the bottom of the stairs as you enter the club after launch.  In the meantime we ask for your patience and that you tie off as best you can until the Irish can get to you.  If the situation is critical please advise the office.

Also, we still have a shortage of spare blocks and tires, we have tried to ensure that any slip that needs a tire has at least one but if you need/want a mooring tire please add it to the list.  (Note: If you are on a full finger we may not be able to provide you with one until we can replenish our stock of spares.)

Special call out to New Members:  If you are new to ABYC and have not had the 'pleasure' of dealing with stern mooring tires and you are not sure, please ask your mentor or one of your neighbours and add your name to the list.

Regards,

Your friendly neighbourhood Irish Rose Crew

Here we go again!
It is spring and the boats go in the water in just a few days. Launch is for launching our boats primarily and must be our main priority.

I will be working on the grounds launch weekend and if there is anyone not needed on the railway or the cranes, please feel free to help me on cleaning up our Club.

We made an incredible headway a few weeks ago, with so many hands helping out, the grounds suddenly looked like there was hope and that winter was months ago!

Soil that is desperately needed for the planting beds, will not be delivered until all the boats are safely in the water, so it will be available from the following Saturday, May 10th.

That work party will require many more hands to rejuvenate the soil and add some much needed help for our summer season.

I have added jobs on the 'Job Jar' sign up list, if any members find other projects that need help, I look forward to hearing from them.

'Til then, happy, safe launching/sailing and hopefully see you on the water.

April General Meeting
______________________________________________________________________________________

ABYC's annual April General Meeting was held on Monday evening with a large number of members in attendance.  All of the Board Members presented their reports with some of the material generating considerable discussion.  The item with the biggest impact on us was the ongoing study of our Sea Walls and Bob Brew, VC-Planning informed the membership that this should be resolved within the next few months.

This meeting also includes the annual tradition of our Senior Vice Commodore presenting ABYC pins to those who have been members for 10 years and 25 years.

In attendance to receive their 10 year pins were:

L-R:  Senior Member Doug Heldman, Senior Member Alan Coulter
and Past Commodore Carolyn Weckesser & Ralph Weckesser

Absent:  Karen Kaiser, Geoff Huck & Annie Na,
Phil Giddings & Krista Slack and Past Commodore Barbara Jones.

In attendance to receive their 25 year pin were:

Senior Member Elaine Parker and Senior Member Joe Simpson

Absent:  Ruth Simpson and Brad McMath & Donna Miller

In addition to the presentation of the ABYC pins, the membership also approved the awarding of
Life Membership to Bernie & Patty Caron, pictured below with Commodore Bob Hedley.

Comment from Senior Vice Commodore Elizabeth Sloss:

It was such a pleasure to award the Life Membership to Bernie and Patty Caron, (who joined ABYC in May 1974).  It was rather fun as Bernie was sitting right in front of the podium and as I described the person to whom the award would be given, he was looking around the room.  I honestly do not think he suspected anything.  When I made the announcement, I have to say that Patty was more on the ball - it took him a good few seconds to take in that I had announced them as our new Life Members.

I have to thank my Secret Committee for working so quickly to come up with a name for me.  I had the honour of making the announcement but the work was done by the committee not me -- although given how long it took them to decide, it clearly wasn't much work!

A note of thanks....

Recently I had made a double reach out to find a Race Equipment Coordinator and a Marketing Assistant in developing a poster for our soon coming Open Regatta.  To my pleasure and amazement,  both requests were answered by new members ... Keith Sanford (Equipment Coordinator) and Courtney Western.  This does my ABYC heart wonders.

Thank you, Keith and Courtney.

I'm very proud that ABYC is attracting such talent ... all with the willingness to step up and get involved. This speaks volumes for our club and members alike.

You've all built a great place ... enjoy!

Kindest regards,

Brian (Chapman, your Sailing Committee Chair)

CRUISE TO CATHEDRAL BLUFFS YACHT CLUB

MAY 17-19

Please join us for the first cruise of the season (not counting the long trek across our harbour to the South Wall of course!) to lovely Cathedral Bluffs Yacht Club.  This cruise is a great opportunity for all of us seasoned cruisers to get back together after the long winter and, since it is also the New Members' Cruise, to meet new members who are joining our cruising adventures.

CBYC is a lovely destination, not that far from home.  We will be serving up a great Italian dinner on Saturday night and since it is a long three-day weekend, there will be opportunities to get together for drinks and meals at the CBYC restaurant and to cook on your boat or use the BBQ facilities.

Please sign up on the sheet in communications room, or call Roxanne in the office.  We will be finalizing the cruise on Thursday, May 15.  Slips may be limited, so please sign up soon!!

Hope to see you there,

Diane Schulman and Peter Woodall (Saratoga)

Danno and Tina Heimann (Solitude)

All hands on Deck!  It's time for the annual first cruise of the season:

From 14:00 - 16:00 on Saturday, May 10th , bring your boats (masts optional), grab your crock pots and put your taste buds to the test.  We had a great turn out last year, but we're always looking for more of the finest chili concoctions our ABYC chefs can muster.  Prizes are waiting to be awarded!

Witness the crowning of this year's Chili Champion by our panel of "Seasoned" Judges.

This event will be happening, rain or shine - although at the moment we are looking good for sunshine!  If the rain comes, check the bulletin board in the front lobby for Plan B details....

Just a reminder, this is a BYO beverage event.  Please eat and drink responsibly.

See you on the South Wall!

__________________________________________________________________________________

Install your Mooring Lines
Carolyn Weckesser, Dock Ladies Coordinator
____________________________________________________________________________________

All members are reminded to install your mooring lines before Launch.  Please install both your dock lines and tire lines.  The club has two aluminum outboards that you can borrow to help you install your mooring lines on your tires.  As well, remember to install copper keepers on all your mooring lines so they don't work loose during the season.

Having your dock and tire lines installed before Launch goes a long way to aiding the dock team to help you secure your boat efficiently and safely.

Thank you for helping make our job easier!

Spring Delight

by Brian Cory

At the water's edge

Into the bay she is placed

Atop a traveler's ledge

View her state of grace

Slings withdrawn, dripping cold

Engines whine, back off!

Adventure, passion, glory be'told

Of islands viewed aloft

Seven month's of dreaming

Twenty-eight weeks of wait

Topsides polished, gleaming

Dreams soon to create

Let loose the lines, AWAY!

Alone and one become

Safety, faith, growth...we pray!

As birds 'for the wind, "Shall we run?

Race Committee Co-ordinator

Race Committee 2014
Once again, I find myself in the position of Race Committee Co-ordinator - pause here for laughter to subside - and since the boats will soon go into the water, it's time to start wrangling bodies to help us run races.  We have our usual packed schedule of events this year - Club Races, our own Regatta and reciprocal Regattas at sister Clubs who help us out when needed.  PLUS...we are also hosting LYRA at the end of July so, needless to say, I'm going to be relentless, trying to "encourage" enough people to step up and give some time to the club.  That's right...I'm baaaaaack!  What can I say - I live for rejection?  I love people  running away from me on the docks?  Who knows what twisted psychosis has made me take this on again, but take it on I have, so here is my wish list for May:

May 17 & 18 (Victoria Day Weekend)   TSCC Ice Breaker

We are supplying them with a mark boat and crew in return for their help with our Regatta
I need an experienced Mark Layer who will take on the heavy lifting.  Ideally, I'd like the same person for both days, but realizing it's a holiday weekend, I'll happily take a different person each day.

May 19 (Victoria Day)    George Coyles Tune-up

Our first club race of the season. I need an RO & Committee Boat Crew for this one.

May 24 & 25  ABYC Regatta

I'm thrilled to say that we're in pretty good shape for this one.  If the people who have already signed up, stay signed up, all I need an experienced mark layer, BUT we never know how many people the other Clubs who are helping us are going to show up or not show up with, so it would be nice to have some of our own people on hand to fill in slots on other Clubs'  RC boats.

June 8   ABYC Double/Single handed races

RO & Committee Boat Crew needed

June 21 & 22    RCYC Open Regatta

Again, I have almost a full crew signed up already, but that could change.  As it stands right now, I need a Mark Layer and helper for one of the mark boats.  One of the committee boat people is signed up for Saturday only, so I will need a replacement for Sunday.

That's it for this installment.  Please consider giving some time, if not for any of these events, later in the season.  I'll be putting up posters with all the events and dates and they are all listed in the job jar.  One weekend event could pretty much cover your mandatory work hours for the season and here's a bizarre concept - you might even enjoy yourself.

Looking forward to hearing from you...
