We ask that you complete this part of your work effort on shore to minimize the negative impact to our harbour. All collected debris should be disposed of in a proper fashion. If you have any questions please contact us [email protected]
Important Things to Remember and Where to put it.
All removed petroleum products, anti-freeze, chemical residues, damaged or worn out parts, batteries, or refuse resulting from the normal maintenance and repair of vessels must be disposed of in accordance with all existing club, city, provincial, and federal rules that govern such actions. If you have any questions, please inquire at the club office or with the yard bosun.
WASTE DISPOSAL:
- The disposal of petroleum/fuel products MUST be brought to the gas dock and given to the bosun personally.
-
- Anti-Freeze (glycol type contaminates) MUST be disposed of in the appropriate containers clearly marked behind the winch house. Please keep used antifreeze in a covered container and out of reach of children and animals!
- All garbage/refuse and or recyclables' must be placed in the containers provided by the club for that purpose.
- Used Batteries and Oil are to be disposed of behind the winch house in the marked area.

The long winter of 2014
didn't stop ABYC's Opti Team
- Mike Goldfarb, Coach
_______________________________________________________________ As we near the start of the spring season and most of us count down the days until the boats are back on the water I also wanted to take a moment to reflect on ABYC's Opti Race Team and how many of the team members did not let winter stop them. Yes, the weather certainly kept us off Lake Ontario, but this winter was seen to be an active one for some of our team members who have been sailing all over. This week we are commencing work to get the Optis out on the water for the 2014 season and I wanted to take a moment to mention just some of what has been taking place this winter. Sacha Adamson is currently in Clearwater, Florida she has been taking part in an Easter Clinic this long-weekend and enjoying every minute. Her family has let us know that she has been out sailing in the Gulf and enjoying every minute. Yesterday she took part in a long up-wind grind and then practiced surfing down-wind. Sacha got to practice some team-racing and improve other skills this weekend. Danny Assimakopoulos was down in Saint Kitts this February, although he didn't get any Opti sailing in he did manage to get some experience in a much larger boat on the Caribbean Sea. Danny made sure to share some videos and pictures with me. Quinten Beelik has been all over, as you have already read he had a regatta in Florida and spent the last week in Uruguay at SUDOPTI 2014. Since last weeks update he had a phenomenal week. On Tuesday they only managed to get one race in, which Quinten placed 37th. Wednesday he was able to get another day to sightsee before placing 16th in his final race of the Qualifiers on Thursday. On Friday he started with a 27th in Bronze Fleet before having a final few races on Saturday and finishing off SUDOPTI in 152nd. He had some very impressive races during his time in Uruguay and showed some tremendous improvements with some strong races this Regatta. Quinten enjoyed the experience and sharing a coach with Antigua. Rowland Goddard had a family trip to Cuba in March and he got some time on the water sailing a few different boats. Rowland got some double handed experience in while in Florida, as he considers what boat he will sail after he ages out of Optis this season. Finally, I got some Opti Coaching in while I was in Eilat, Israel this winter. I spent a few weeks Guest Coaching Eilat's Opti Race Team on the Red Sea. It was a terrific experience coaching a group of Israeli athletes in the southern tropical city. During those few weeks I got the fun and challenging experience coaching in a different language learning new words for all the different sailing terminology. When May starts we will be back on the water for a busy 2014 season. The ABYC Opti Race Team is in its 5th Season and has more athletes then ever before. Make sure to read Ship2Shore all summer to read updates on what our young athletes will be doing all summer long, you can also follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/ABYCJuniorRaceTeam. If you are at the club and see us training please come say hello. It was a fine winter for some of our Opti Sailors |

ATTENTION ALL CLUB RACERS
IMPORTANT NOTICE
_____________________________________________________________________________
The invoices for your PHRF-LO certificates were mailed out on April 11th. with other club material relating to the upcoming General Meeting - please look for it when you get the envelope. In each package, I have included a blank PHRF-LO Application and Change Form on which you can note any updated measurements or changes to your boat, and instructions on establishing various measurements are also included. Those members who did not get a copy of their 2013 certificate from me earlier last year have been supplied with a copy in the mailing.
For 2014 PHRF-LO is continuing to fine-tune the various adjustments to each boat's standard rating (SP). Rating adjustments, which used to be handled in only 3 second increments, are now handled with 1, 2, 3 or more second adjustments to obtain a boats final rating, the Adjusted Speed Potential (ASP).
In order to properly apply these adjustments to each boat, PHRF now requires additional sail measurements - specifically the foot measurement on the spinnaker. On many certificates, especially those with older spinnakers, the foot measurement is shown as the same length as the maximum girth measurement (which was default setting). PHRF is now rating the total sail area as opposed to just the maximum girth.
Furthermore, any boats racing with a "square-top" mainsail, or any boat that normally races with a non-overlapping headsail as their largest genoa (i.e. under 115% of the J measurement), now needs to supply more detailed measurements for these sails. Please contact me directly if your boat uses either of these sails.
You may choose to re-measure these spinnakers yourself, and supply me with the updated foot measurement, or you may bring your largest spinnaker to the PHRF Measurement Night at the club on Tuesday May 13/14, where I will assist you in obtaining this dimension. Alternatively, if your sails are with a sailmaker for any repairs over the winter, please ask them to supply you a measurement certificate for the largest spinnaker.
As before, all new sails must be supplied with a sail-makers measurement certificate. This applies to mainsails, largest spinnaker, and largest headsail.
To sum up, most racers in the JaM division (No-Flying Sails) need to do nothing, most racers with spinnakers (Flying Sails) now need to supply the foot measurement of their largest spinnaker.
The cost of the PHRF certificate for 2014 is $35.00 payable to ABYC. Please call the office to process your payment, or pay by cheque on Launch day or at the PHRF Measurement Night.
Remember to complete a Race Registration Form at Launch - Late Registrations will be subject to a late registration fine.

Install your Mooring Lines
Carolyn Weckesser, Dock Ladies Coordinator
____________________________________________________________________ All members are reminded to install your mooring lines before Launch. Please install both your dock lines and tire lines. The club has two aluminum outboards that you can borrow to help you install your mooring lines on your tires. As well, remember to install copper keepers on all your mooring lines so they don't work loose during the season. Having your dock and tire lines installed before Launch goes a long way to aiding the dock team to help you secure your boat efficiently and safely. Thank you for helping make our job easier!
