Two and one half weeks to launch and as I write this, the world outside my windows is white with fresh snow; a slow and uncomfortable start to what I am dreaming will be a fabulous sailing season.

In the meantime, there is business to conduct.  We have an AGM on the 28th of April and it is at this meeting that I have the honour of passing out the pins for 10 and 25 years of membership.  I would ask that any of you who are hoping to receive a pin this year will email me before the meeting to make sure that I don't miss anyone.  This process has not been as straightforward as one might hope because both the record-keeping and the rules have changed over time.  I am hoping we can work together to make sure everyone who should be given a pin at this meeting receives one.

Please remember to enter your work hours in the JOB JAR as you go.  That way you will be sure to have a proper tally at the end of the year and won't have to scramble to fulfill your obligation.  If you aren't sure how many hours a particular job is worth please just ask one of the organizers of the event.

You will notice at launch that we have a fully engaged and active Safety Committee.  There will be members of the Committee wearing blue hard-hats patrolling the yard throughout the launch process.  Please raise any concerns with any one of them and we will make sure that your concerns are considered carefully.  Our mission is to improve the safety on the lot at all times for the benefit of members and the Club.  I too will be one of the Blue Brigade so feel free to talk to me about your safety concerns.

A caution to all of you:  Drinking alcohol during launch is not acceptable.  Anyone using any equipment or directing any teams who is caught drinking will be taken off their post immediately and I will not hesitate to bring anyone so caught to discipline.  Launch and haul-out both have the potential to be exceptionally dangerous.  It is our job to make sure we do everything we can to make it as safe as possible.  I am the one responsible at the Board table and I take that responsibility very seriously: drinking on the job is NOT an option.  The liability for the club and for the Board is huge if we do not make sure that we do everything we can to make the lot safe - turning a blind-eye to drinking is not upholding our responsibility.

Business done for now, I have to say that when I watch our boat rise up off its cradle to be launched in the lake I get as excited as I did at Christmas when I was a kid.  It is one of my favourite moments in the year.  I wish that excitement on every one of you.  I hope that we have a warm day with no wind for launch weekend.

Exceptional turnout last weekend!
- Sue Hamilton, Work Party Coordinator
___________________________________________________________________________

All of the praying and singing/humming paid off!  Last Saturday was sunny and warm (everything being relative) and we had a great turnout for the all day work party.  Between 90 - 100 members came out to pitch in and get our club in shape for the summer.  Many jobs were completed which is fabulous - yes fabulous!  Chef Paul and team put out a tasty nutritious buffet which was enjoyed by all.

There are still some jobs that remain though.  Normally we would not schedule a work party on the Easter weekend but there are 2 - 3 areas where we really help to finish the jobs before launch.

We need help:

Finishing up the dry sail area - for the next two weeks
Putting the boards back on the white dock
Finishing up the red dock and blue docks.

Please come out to help finish this off.  We will continue the next two weeks, then we have launch (yay!) and then we will schedule another work party the following Saturday (May 10th).  I will publish a list of remaining jobs.

Thank you to everyone who came out last week - it was a real team effort.  (You can now hum 'We Built this Club House with Rock and Roll' if you like or 'We Sail the Ocean Blue' - for all you Gilbert & Sullivan fans out there)

What a difference a day makes!
- Ann Kay, Landscape Committee Chair

A very big thank you to all of the hard workers who spent the day cleaning up the winter debris from our Club grounds...

I arrived Saturday morning to see what looked to be a daunting task, but many hands made light work of restoring our grounds back to looking like it should.  There is still much to be done including the west side of our Club, so hopefully we can finish off the work at launch.

There will be some triple mix soil delivered by then, so we will be able to put some much needed vitamins back into the ground.

THANK YOU again to all.

These photos show only a sample of the many jobs that nearly 100 of our members were doing last week to ensure that we will all have an enjoyable season.

Kudos to Sue Hamilton for coordinating most of it.

2014 Cruising Kick Off
Friday, April 11, 2014
- Chris & Mary Pappas, Cruising Captains
_________________________________________________________

Last Friday the 2014 Cruising Kick off presentation attracted a full house at the club.  Of course it may have been the beautiful weather and the great menu put on by the restaurant staff but we are going with the epic interest in this year's calendar of Cruising events.

Thanks to all who attended and for the great show of support.  For anyone who was unable to attend, the cruises are on the calendar on ABYC.on.ca and we will be posting the sign up sheets in the communication room shortly.

Because some cruises fill up faster than others, we sometimes may have to limit attendance and create a waiting list.  For this reason and just common courtesy, we ask for your cooperation   If your plans change and you cannot attend a cruise that you have signed up for, please let the office know.   We can remove your name from the list and advise the hosts (menu planning);  the gas dock (available slips), and the destination club (reciprocal slips).

Just 24 days to the first cruise, get those bottoms painted and top sides polished!

IMPORTANT NOTICE

_____________________________________________________________________________

The invoices for your PHRF-LO certificates were mailed out on April 11th. with other club material relating to the upcoming General Meeting - please look for it when you get the envelope.  In each package, I have included a blank PHRF-LO Application and Change Form on which you can note any updated measurements or changes to your boat, and instructions on establishing various measurements are also included.  Those members who did not get a copy of their 2013 certificate from me earlier last year have been supplied with a copy in the mailing.

For 2014 PHRF-LO is continuing to fine-tune the various adjustments to each boat's standard rating (SP).  Rating adjustments, which used to be handled in only 3 second increments, are now handled with 1, 2, 3 or more second adjustments to obtain a boats final rating, the Adjusted Speed Potential (ASP).

In order to properly apply these adjustments to each boat, PHRF now requires additional sail measurements - specifically the foot measurement on the spinnaker.  On many certificates, especially those with older spinnakers, the foot measurement is shown as the same length as the maximum girth measurement (which was default setting).  PHRF is now rating the total sail area as opposed to just the maximum girth.

Furthermore, any boats racing with a "square-top" mainsail, or any boat that normally races with a non-overlapping headsail as their largest genoa (i.e. under 115% of the J measurement), now needs to supply more detailed measurements for these sails.  Please contact me directly if your boat uses either of these sails.

You may choose to re-measure these spinnakers yourself, and supply me with the updated foot measurement, or you may bring your largest spinnaker to the PHRF Measurement Night at the club on Tuesday May 13/14, where I will assist you in obtaining this dimension.  Alternatively, if your sails are with a sailmaker for any repairs over the winter, please ask them to supply you a measurement certificate for the largest spinnaker.

As before, all new sails must be supplied with a sail-makers measurement certificate.  This applies to mainsails, largest spinnaker, and largest headsail.

To sum up, most racers in the JaM division (No-Flying Sails) need to do nothing, most racers with spinnakers (Flying Sails) now need to supply the foot measurement of their largest spinnaker.

The cost of the PHRF certificate for 2014 is $35.00 payable to ABYC.  Please call the office to process your payment, or pay by cheque on Launch day or at the PHRF Measurement Night.

Remember to complete a Race Registration Form at Launch - Late Registrations will be subject to a late registration fine.

2015 Pan Am Games Race Committee
- Dave Steenbergen
______________________________________________________________________

There was some confusion (at least I was confused) about applications for race committee at the Pan Am Games. Here is the straight scoop.

If you are interested in submitting an application you need to contact Tammy Coutu (tammyco@sympatico.ca) as soon as possible, but no later than April 28th, 2014.   All Race Committee volunteers will be required to participate for the duration of the Regatta as well as the training events.  The official dates of the Regatta are July 8 to July 20, 2015; but it is likely that most Race Committee volunteers will not be required until July 10.

The training events are:

Fall Test Event:    Oct 17 - 19, 2014
Spring Training:   Spring 2015, 2 one day seminars - dates to be confirmed
Spring Event:        May 16 - 17 TS&CC Icebreaker Regatta

The test event this fall is scheduled for our haulout weekend.  The Organizing Committee has looked at whether it could be moved and concluded that there are no alternative dates that would work.  If you are selected for Race Committee, you will need to appoint someone to look after your boat at haulout.

The Pan Am Games website (toronto2015.org) is accepting general volunteer applications for all sports, but for now Race Committee volunteers have been requested to submit their applications by email to Tammy and to hold off on registering on the Games website.  (You will need to register on the website eventually, but holding off on that should reduce the chances of you being assigned inadvertently to baseball or badminton....)

Please copy me (dave.steenbergen@rogers.com) on correspondence with Tammy, so that I can try to smooth out any further bumps in the road.

Since you read last week's article, Quinten and his parents made the long trip down to Uruguay.  Team Canada consisting of three athletes is doing training with Antigua, on Quinten's first two day he got to go out and test the conditions and get some practice in.  Getting used to the conditions in Uruguay and preparing to race in the very competitive fleet.

Friday night Quinten also got to be the flag bearer for Canada at the Opening Ceremonies.  However; on Saturday with high winds, the practice was cancelled, and this did allowed Quinten and his family to get some sightseeing in as well.

Monday featured the first day of racing, Alison was able to let us know that "they had three races today in light wind with huge shifts."  Quinten is working hard, determined to improve his starts and appears to be having a good time.

As of Monday evening, Quinten is in 153rd, after competing three races.  He continues racing this week. If you want to follow ABYC's Quinten Beelik at this event go to http://www.sudopti2014.org where they have results, photos and a system where you can track Quinten live in each race.  You can also visit our Facebook page www.Facebook.com/ABYCJuniorRaceTeam to see some photos and updates that we post from Uruguay.

Be sure to check next weeks Ship2Shore for more updates.

Danno Revisited
___________________________________

On Thursday, April 10th Danno Heimann gave a presentation of his hitching across the Pacific by boat for 18 months in 1992/1993.  Danno began his adventure in Costa Rica when he joined a skipper he had never met and sailed off with him and other crew on his 105 foot sailboat.  Over the 18 months Danno's journey took him all over the South Pacific and on to Australia, eventually ending up in Thailand. At the end of his journey he spent 10 days in a Buddhist retreat where he was not allowed to speak and he survived the experience.

During his journey he sailed on about 6 different boats, ( I lost count) leaving 1 boat when a skipper had reached his destination and jumping on another boat to continue his trip.

His first boat actually sank under him when it went aground on a reef and drove a big hole in the hull.
Danno's presentation, was both informative and entertaining.  He is a gifted presenter and his pictures are outstanding.

And we raised another $80.25 in our Toonie Thursday collection.  The money we collect will be divided between the Corinthian Fund and the Junior Sailing Program.

Dock Ladies Update
Launch 2014
Carolyn Weckesser, Dock Ladies Crew Coordinator 2014
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Since 2001 Alison Booz has been the ABYC Dock Ladies Co-ordinator.  She has elected to step down this year and I have agreed to take up the responsibility.

Alison has done an admirable job and we wish to thank her for her outstanding contribution and leadership.  The good news is that Alison has agreed to remain part of the team.

The "Dock Lady" team is one part of a large and detailed launch operation.  At launch, the primary team works on the docks to welcome, and assist boat owners to their slips for the first time in a new season.  The team also includes members stationed near the launching areas (cranes and rail) to announce your "splashdown" to ensure there is someone to greet you at your slip and the public address system announcer.  This team is integral to making the launch (and in the fall the haul out), operations run smoothly, efficiently and safely.  Your cooperation with our team is greatly appreciated!  (More about lines on the tires to come...!)

No offence to the gents, but this team has traditionally been crewed by our women members as many of the men are assigned to the heavily physical tasks, hence the name "Dock Lady".

We are recruiting new members for this crew for 2014.  Anyone interested in joining our team, please contact me at ABYCDockLadies@gmail.com for additional details.  No technical skills are needed, just enthusiasm!

Crane Launch Dates
- Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chairman
____________________________________________________________________________________

The entire crane launch will take place on Saturday May 3, starting at 8 AM.

There will be no further revisions to this date/time.

As the weather improves, the survey of boats and cradles that was announced after haulout will continue.  We will be informing individual members if their boats require sling marks, cradle modifications and the like.
