ENVIRONMENT

The ABYC Board is legally and morally obligated to improve the quality of the environment that we live and play in.  Please assist us in complying with environmental, safety and health concerns by co-operating with the guideline stated by the Environment Committee.

HARBOUR

The harbour is full.  If you have changed your boat or are planning to change your boat, it is essential that you fill out the Change of Boat form and submit it to the Board for approval for admission of your boat into the club fleet.  Failure to do this will preclude you from being eligible for slip assignment.  The submitted form is the first step before the Harbour Management Committee can begin the process as laid out and documented in the ABYC Policies.

CLUB GROUNDS AND DOCKS

The club grounds and docks have sustained a lot of damage due to the harsh winter.  Please come out to the all-day work party and lend a hand to make everything right for the upcoming sailing season.

It's hard to believe that we will be in the water in less than a month.  It has been a long cold winter and I am so looking forward to getting back on the water.

GRATUITIES & MINIMUM BILLING

A couple of times in the last month I have been asked how gratuities work on minimum billing and on accounts receivable.  At the beginning of each cycle, you are billed $140.00.  This gives you that amount of "credit" at the bar that can be used for food and beverage.  This amount is used for the purchase of food and beverage and any tax associated with it.  It does not cover gratuities.  For example, if you have a meal with beverages and the total of the bill with tax comes to $100.00, the $100.00 is deducted from your "credit".  If you leave without signing your chit, the chit goes to the office, $88.50 is credited to the Clubs Food and Beverage account and $11.50 is credited to tax.  A 15% gratuity (before tax) is charged to your receivables account.  If you sign your chit before leaving for the day you can put in the amount of a tip you would like to leave.  If you feel a tip is not warranted you can put in "0".  Whatever you put in the tip line is charged to your receivable account.  When you have used up your minimum amount, any bill you do not pay at the end of the day is charged to your receivable account.  Same procedure applies.  It goes to the office, a 15% gratutity before tax is added and charged to your account.  Again if you sign your chit at the end of the day you can put in any amount you like and that is what you are charged.  Might I suggest that at the end of your day that you ask for your tab, check it and sign it.

NEW MEMBERSHIP CARDS

Soon you will be issued your new membership cards.  They will have a magnetic strip on them that you will use to open a tab at the bar.  This is designed to make sure your tab is opened under your name and not someone else's.  (In my case there are 3 M. Macdonald's in the system and I have had other peoples tabs charged to my account).  No system is perfect but this will go a long way to make sure the right charges go to the right accounts.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.  This coming Saturday is the all day work party.  As I have to work that day I have given Sue a list of jobs that have to get done around the clubhouse.

SEAWALL PROJECT

Our Seawall Planning Committee continues to work toward finding a timely, cost effective, and workable solution for the repair of the walls.  We are now getting into the detail phases and it is fully coming together as a plan.  I look forward to sharing that plan with you at our upcoming April 28th meeting.

What we all as members already know for sure, and seem to agree upon, is that we really must move forward with a solution.  We also know that it will be costly, it may cause interruptions to our docking and/or winter storage, and we also know it will demand ongoing volunteer support.   The good news is that this will be the kind of project ABYC's members are proven to be well suited to undertake!

Best Regards,

Bob Brew

ABYC Lecture-April 10, 2014
Danno Hitchhikes across the Pacific
_______________________________________________

Several years ago (you can tell it was several by the picture) ABYC member Danno Heimann took a one year leave of absense from IBM to follow his Dream of hitchhiking across the Pacific Ocean.  His adventure ended up extending to 18 months and took him from Mexico to Australia.  Danno sailed with several skippers on several boats during his extended journey.  When a boat would reach its destination Danno would hop off and walk the docks until he found a new boat heading in his direction.

Join Danno and his many ABYC friends as he takes us along with him through his journey across the Pacific.

Danno made this presentation last year to a delighted audience and many asked us to repeat this lecture again this year.  So if you missed last year's presentation this is your chance to enjoy a delightful evening with Danno and his exploits.

Thursday- April 10, 2014

Once again we will be taking up a collection on Toonie Thursday in support of our Junior Sailing Program and our Corinthian Fund.

Team required for White Wall repairs
- Paul Lefneski, Harbourmaster
_____________________________________________________________________________________

I am sure that most of you are already aware that the long and cold winter has been very hard on the harbour infrastructure this year.  The latest development is that some of the tie backs have broken in two different places on the white wall.  This is what holds the wall upright and keeps it from falling into the water.  This is a safety issue and will block approximately 10 to 12 slips on the white wall until it is fixed.  There are also another 10 to 12 slips impacted by the lifted finger docks at the end of the red dock and on the blue wall.

The harbour is completely full this year.  In fact we have a waiting list for slips.  Therefore, if these issues are not fixed before launch there will be members without slips.  The team that would usually fix the white wall is still finishing up on the sea wall in the dry sail area.  This is another vital project that needs to be completed before launch as it is a crane launch point for boats.  So what we need is another team to work on the white wall.  I am looking for a team lead to oversee these repairs and approximately 10 people to work with the team lead.  We will not be driving new steel in this area.  We will just be fixing the tie backs to safely secure the wall.  You don't need any specialized skills do to this job.

Please email me at
plefneski@rogers.com if you can participate.
Spring has Sprung!!
- Ann Kay, Chair - Landscaping Committee
__________________________________________________________________________

Well I may be speaking out of line, but I do believe that spring has sprung!!!!

I managed to pull the birch boughs out of the planters last Friday, so maybe that is it for winter and the ice has gone???

This coming Saturday, our first all day work party, the emphasis will be on cleaning up whatever we can from this dreadful winter.  There are branches everywhere and damage done to the grounds and our plants.  I plan to remove all of the debris that is not still in ice and clean up wherever possible.

So bring down your clippers, gardening tools and anything that you can think of that will help clean up our grounds.

We have a lot of debris and green garbage bags will be available.

Hope to see you next Saturday and that the weather holds for us.

More on New Members' Night

Senior Member, Trixie Hoyer enjoyed last Saturday's New Members' Night and provided us with a few of the photos she took of our new members.

Message from the Environment Committee

- The Enviro Committee

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Launch is a few short weeks away; we all know what that means!  Sand - Paint - Clean & Tune Up time !!!

The ABYC Board is legally and morally obligated to improve the quality of the environment that we live and play in.  Please assist us in complying with environmental, safety and health concerns by cooperating with the following guidelines:

Important Things to Remember:

When sanding and painting boat bottoms with antifouling paints or compounds, please, where possible, use tarpaulins and all available means to contain any sanding residue, paint chips or chemicals!  All collected debris should be disposed of in a proper fashion.  If you have any questions please contact us before starting any work.  The club strongly urges the use of ablative type water based antifouling paints.

Discharge of sewage, contaminated bilge water, solid refuse, or any other pollutants into the waters of the Harbour is strictly prohibited by law.  We ask that you complete this part of your work effort on shore to minimize the negative impact to our harbour

All removed petroleum products, anti-freeze, chemical residues, damaged or worn out parts, batteries, or refuse resulting from the normal maintenance and repair of vessels must be disposed of in accordance with all existing club, city, provincial, and federal rules that govern such actions. If you have any questions, please inquire at the club office or with the bosun.

WASTE DISPOSAL:

  • All garbage/refuse and or recyclables' must be placed in the containers provided by the club for that purpose.
  • The disposal of petroleum/fuel products MUST be brought to the gas dock and given to the bosun personally.
  • Anti-Freeze (glycol type contaminates) MUST be disposed in the appropriate containers clearly marked behind the winch house.  Keep used antifreeze in a covered container and out of the way of children and animals!
  • Used Batteries and Oil are to be disposed of behind the winch house in the marked area.

Take note that when contaminates are mixed in the containers it TRIPLES the cost of disposal.

Thank you to everyone for taking extra care this year and helping us meet our goals.

LAUNCH INFORMATION

Dock Ladies Update
Launch 2014
Carolyn Weckesser, Dock Ladies Crew Coordinator 2014
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Since 2001 Alison Booz has been the ABYC Dock Ladies Co-ordinator.  She has elected to step down this year and I have agreed to take up the responsibility.

Alison has done an admirable job and we wish to thank her for her outstanding contribution and leadership.  The good news is that Alison has agreed to remain part of the team.

The "Dock Lady" team is one part of a large and detailed launch operation.  At launch, the primary team works on the docks to welcome, and assist boat owners to their slips for the first time in a new season.  The team also includes members stationed near the launching areas (cranes and rail) to announce your "splashdown" to ensure there is someone to greet you at your slip and the public address system announcer.  This team is integral to making the launch (and in the fall the haul out), operations run smoothly, efficiently and safely.  Your cooperation with our team is greatly appreciated!  (More about lines on the tires to come...!)

No offence to the gents, but this team has traditionally been crewed by our women members as many of the men are assigned to the heavily physical tasks, hence the name "Dock Lady".

We are recruiting new members for this crew for 2014.  Anyone interested in joining our team, please contact me at ABYCDockLadies@gmail.com for additional details.  No technical skills are needed, just enthusiasm!

Crane Launch Dates
- Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chairman
____________________________________________________________________________________

In my recent S2S notice, I explained that the current plan for launch was for the large crane to work half a day on Friday May 2.  After a very thorough review of the plan, I have determined that it will be possible to achieve the staging for the mast-up/hydraulic trailer boats without interference with the broader operation and still complete the entire crane launch in one day, as per our usual practice.

Therefore, the entire crane launch will take place on Saturday May 3, starting at 8 AM.

There will be no further revisions to this date/time.

As the weather improves, the survey of boats and cradles that was announced after haulout will continue.  We will be informing individual members if their boats require sling marks, cradle modifications and the like.

Information needed for Railyard
- Dan Marcil, Railyard Chair
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Could all owners of boats in railyard who are NOT launching for any reason please notify me as soon as possible or by April 12 at the latest.

Please contact me at dsjmarcil0464@gmail.com or 416-278-4585 .

This will help us organize for launch and keep things flowing smoothly.

Thanks!

Spring makes an appearance (Finally!)
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Spring made a surprise appearance last Sunday and our members were quick to pounce on the opportunity to remove tarps and start getting bottoms ready for launch (not that far away).  With the temperature of +12°C, it was also a good day for just wandering around, getting reacquainted with people we had not seen since last fall.
