Team required for White Wall repairs
- Paul Lefneski, Harbourmaster
_____________________________________________________________________________________

I am sure that most of you are already aware that the long and cold winter has been very hard on the harbour infrastructure this year.  The latest development is that some of the tie backs have broken in two different places on the white wall.  This is what holds the wall upright and keeps it from falling into the water.  This is a safety issue and will block approximately 10 to 12 slips on the white wall until it is fixed.  There are also another 10 to 12 slips impacted by the lifted finger docks at the end of the red dock and on the blue wall.

The harbour is completely full this year.  In fact we have a waiting list for slips.  Therefore, if these issues are not fixed before launch there will be members without slips.  The team that would usually fix the white wall is still finishing up on the sea wall in the dry sail area.  This is another vital project that needs to be completed before launch as it is a crane launch point for boats.  So what we need is another team to work on the white wall.  I am looking for a team lead to oversee these repairs and approximately 10 people to work with the team lead.  We will not be driving new steel in this area.  We will just be fixing the tie backs to safely secure the wall.  You don't need any specialized skills do to this job.

Please email me at
plefneski@rogers.com if you can participate.

I know you are all thinking - is it THE list.. the All Day Work Party list?  Yes my little ABees (with apologies to Barbara Jones 'Call Me A-Bees' song).  Yes it true.  A lot of the jobs are in the Job Jar under All Day Work Party.  There are a number of very important Dock Maintenance jobs that are not there yet but should be by next week.  And you can always send an email to abycworkparty@hotmail.com to let me know which job you are interested in.  Once you have narrowed it down to one job that is.  Take your time, hum your favourite tune, and look over the list.

Seawall Project

In a previous posting to S2S I invited members to contact me with any questions regarding our Seawall Project's plans.  I have been talking with many of you and have received positive and encouraging feedback. The following addresses common questions I've been getting.

Please feel free to contact me. I can be reached at vcplan@abyc.on.ca, or 416-817-5434.

Best Regards,

Bob Brew

VC - Planning

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. I hear we are buying some expensive heavy equipment?

A. Yes, the Seawall Planning Committee determined our best course of action is to continue the seawall remediation "in-house", which does mean acquiring the right equipment for the job.   Be assured, they are looking for equipment that would be suitably aged and depreciated.  All opportunities for leasing/renting/buying or even borrowing are being fully investigated.

Q. Why can't we keep repairing as we are doing so today?

A. The pace is simply too slow.  The walls are failing at a rate faster than the existing technique can keep up.  That technique also requires a large team of volunteers and frequent maintenance to old and inadequate equipment.

Q. Why do we have to do this now?

A. We've known for years that our walls were rapidly rusting and at the end of their life.  We had a study done a couple years ago that confirmed it.  Study results aside, the wall retainers are breaking underground and the walls are crumbling at the water level at an ever faster rate.  They are showing themselves to be worse than estimated and we've lost the luxury of postponing.

Q. What if we do nothing?

A. If we wait any longer, we risk significant interruption to our sailing operations all around the harbour, summer and winter.

Q. Can't our existing tractor/backhoe do the same job?

A. We need the right tool for the job to outpace the deterioration.  Our tractor isn't suitable in several areas including hydraulics and reach.

Q. If we buy heavy equipment, who would be qualified to operate and maintain it?

A. Training several operators will be an important part of the acquisition.  We've found training available from a local firm which has suggested a "one day" training for a small group.  We are told it would be very adequate and at an approximate cost of $1,200.

Q. How long a project is this?

A. This is another project which depends heavily on member participation.  We are still in the logistics-planning phase which includes how we would, going forward, winter-store boats further away from targeted walls, and possibly how to have the least interruption shuffling docks during the sailing season. Today's best-case scenario is three winter seasons, but count on four.  So, 3 to 4 years.

Q. Ok, so how much will it cost?

A. The value of the equipment, either purchased or rented is approximately $100,000.  The bigger concern is the cost of materials.  We budgeted $50,000 for this year - but that was based on working at our existing pace.  With the pace significantly increased under the new technique, we could work through that same $50,000 on a monthly basis for those months we are active.

Q. The big question is - how do we pay for it?

A. The Seawall Committee is currently reviewing options and will present them at our April General Meeting. We will have to get creative.

ABYC Lecture-April 10, 2014
Danno Hitchhikes across the Pacific
_______________________________________________

Several years ago (you can tell it was several by the picture) ABYC member Danno Heimann took a one year leave of absense from IBM to follow his Dream of hitchhiking across the Pacific Ocean.  His adventure ended up extending to 18 months and took him from Mexico to Australia.  Danno sailed with several skippers on several boats during his extended journey.  When a boat would reach its destination Danno would hop off and walk the docks until he found a new boat heading in his direction.

Join Danno and his many ABYC friends as he takes us along with him through his journey across the Pacific.

Danno made this presentation last year to a delighted audience and many asked us to repeat this lecture again this year.  So if you missed last year's presentation this is your chance to enjoy a delightful evening with Danno and his exploits.

Wanted:  Race Committee
Equipment Coordinator
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Jean Gap has been doing the job of Race Committee Equipment Coordinator for a few years now, and has decided it's time to step down.

On behalf of all the Race Committee who has benefited from her efforts to organize and maintain the equipment we use for running races at our club and when we help at other clubs, thank-you Jean!

If you're looking for a responsibility that you can call your own, help our racing program but not have to do race committee (perfect for a racer!), and of course contribute volunteer hours, this could be the job for you.

It involves:
- organizing the equipment shed at the beginning of the year, with periodic checkups (think sail locker on steroids, with dozens of anchors, scores of flags, kilometers of anchor rode, and a herd of large, deflated, marks, and boat kits of smaller items)
- identifying equipment that needs repair or replacement and coordinating with our club manager to do so
- checking that our boat kits are complete
- maintaining an inventory of equipment

The position reports to Brian Chapman, Chair, Sailing Committee.   Please feel free to reach out to Brian (torontosales@uksailmakers.com) or myself (rearcom@abyc.on.ca) if you are interested or need more information .

Thank You!

The LYRA organizing committee would like to thank all those who donated items to the auctions for the LYRA Dinner and to the 70 people who attended the Dinner.  The evening was a great success both financially and as an evening of entertainment.

Our guest speaker; world renowned Boat Designer, Steve Killing gave us an hour long tour of the racing programs of the C-Class Catamarans as well as the 2013 America's Cup.  Not only is Steve an extremely talented Boat Designer, but he is also a very eloquent speaker.  I know I can speak for all that were in attendance that we came away with a great appreciation of high speed multi-hull racing.

The evening was also a great financial success as we raised $4,600 towards our LYRA Budget.

Thank you to everyone in attendance for your generosity.

Safety Warning!

- Jim Allen

_____________________________________________________________________________________

On Saturday March 22nd., Stan Gap did a safety walk about of the yard.  He noticed a boat using tripods as middle supports for its cradle.  One of the feet of the starboard tripod had sunk into the gravel and it was not supporting the boat.  He repositioned the tripod and tightened it against the boat.

Tripods may need to have wood under them since now that the ground is thawing they may sink into the gravel and leave the boat insufficiently supported.

Please check your tripods to make sure they are properly grounded.

Mentors Required

_____________________________________________________________________

At ABYC mentoring a new senior member is a very important part of our self-help club.  This helps our new members get off on the right foot.  We work very hard to match you with someone of like interest and boat size.  These mentoring hours are eligible for your work contribution.  If you are an experienced Senior Member and feel that you have what it takes to be a mentor we need you.

Please contact me at 4cd.sampson@gmail.com.

LAUNCH INFORMATION

Crane Launch Dates
- Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chairman
__________________________________________________________

In my recent S2S notice, I explained that the current plan for launch was for the large crane to work half a day on Friday May 2.  After a very thorough review of the plan, I have determined that it will be possible to achieve the staging for the mast-up/hydraulic trailer boats without interference with the broader operation and still complete the entire crane launch in one day, as per our usual practice.

Therefore, the entire crane launch will take place on Saturday May 3, starting at 8 AM.

There will be no further revisions to this date/time.

As the weather improves, the survey of boats and cradles that was announced after haulout will continue.  We will be informing individual members if their boats require sling marks, cradle modifications and the like.

Information needed for Railyard
- Dan Marcil, Railyard Chair
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Could all owners of boats in railyard who are NOT launching for any reason please notify me as soon as possible or by April 12 at the latest.

Please contact me at dsjmarcil0464@gmail.com or 416-278-4585 .

This will help us organize for launch and keep things flowing smoothly.

Thanks!
