Rules expert and renowned sail maker Butch Ulmer gave a presentation on the Racing Rules of Sailing last Thursday as part of the ABYC "Toonie Thursday" speaking series.

After the presentation, Butch said  "I enjoyed the audience and I hope that they enjoyed the presentation as much as I enjoyed them" and "BTW Brian - thank you and the Yacht Club for your gesture of the fleece jacket.  I will wear it proudly.  Best Regards, Butch"

Seawalls

At our January General Meeting, I mentioned my intention to resurrect our Seawall Planning Committee.  It is now up and running at full speed, and has been making excellent progress.  I believe you are all well versed in the unfortunate state of deterioration of our seawalls.  (I'll comment on our latest observations further below.)

In 2012, members were presented results of a consultant's study, which proposed several options for repair.  The Seawall Committee has determined our best course of action will be similar to one of that study's recommendations, but with the intent of undertaking the work "in-house".  This means we plan to continue driving sheets of steel in front of the existing wall, without outside contractors, but with significantly upgraded equipment.  With our Club's current method, we are successful at driving only a few pieces per day, which represents only a few feet of wall length.  Acquiring equipment more suitable to the task will enable us to place several steel sheets per hour.  At our upcoming April General Meeting, we will be asking for membership's approval to increase the budget in order to obtain appropriate equipment, and to allow the purchase of more steel and materials.  You can watch for further information on this as it becomes available.

Inspection of our Seawalls this past Saturday revealed an extremely troubling state along White Wall.  The entire length of the wall in front of our clubhouse is weakening.  The walers (horizontal steel beams which spread support across the steel wall and are connected to the tie-backs) are rusting off.  Some have completely fallen in the water.  Without them, the pressure of the land behind is pushing hard on the wall toward the water.   In Photo 1, the V-docks along White Wall are angling downward as the wall they are attached to starts bulging outward.  Photo 2 shows the absence of one of the walers.

If you have any questions, concerns, or comments regarding this project, you are encouraged to contact me directly.  I welcome your thoughts and can be reached at vcplan@abyc.on.ca, or 416-817-5434.

Best Regards,

Bob Brew

One of the very first things on my list of things to do when I took this position was to get rid of the freezer that was in the gazebo.  There is a great "Redneck Joke" I could insert here but I think it would hit the cutting room floor.  As we didn't have money in the budget in 2013 to replace it, it was top of my budget  items for this year.  Well this past week my dream came true, it's gone (see photo) and a new one resides in the clubhouse.  We had picked out a new one and thanks to Mike Kovacs (Yard Bosun), we saved $200.00 on the replacement.  Having it gone now gives the House Committee and the Property Department a structure that we can incorporate into the patio renovations.  More to come on that later.

Speaking of the Property Department, we now have a new chair.  Robin Rowat has come out of retirement and is taking over the position.  This is not new to Robin, he has held the position a few times during his time with the Club and I look forward to working with him on continuing the improvements to the Clubhouse and the Sailing School Building.

This coming Saturday is our annual "Spring Fling" party.  The Entertainment Committee has a great evening planned, hope to see ya there!  It might be still freezing but at least we can pretend spring is coming... On the 29th we are having the LYRA fundraising dinner.   Tickets are $65.00 with $25.00 going to the Regatta.  I am really looking forward to the guest speaker, Steve Killing, who has had a hand in designing some great boats, a few of which I am sure we all have sailed on.

Tickets are still available so call Roxanne in the office and reserve a space.

 We are in a time-crunch

Well I must admit, it's hard to get enthused about the all day SPRING work party while I'm still shaking ice pellets out of my boots and the snow is still 2 feet deep in the driveway.  But not to worry, spring starts on Thursday, so I'm sure Mother Nature will realize that it is time to make the change to warmer weather.  Am I right?  In the meantime the planning continues.

Last week we had a good turn out to help with the wall repairs, and we need to keep up the effort.  We are in a time-crunch here and once the pile driving is completed in the dry sail area, we need to use it in several areas out in the harbour where some of docks have gone 'vertical' on us.

Please come out and lend a hand to get all repairs done before launch.

A Remarkable Sailor

_____________________________________________________________

Hans Fogh, born in 1938, passed away on 15 March 2014, aged 76 years, was one of the world 's most successful sailors with a sailing career which really started when he, as a 22 -year-old, won Olympic silver in 1960 at his first Olympic Games for Denmark in the Flying Dutchman class, together with Ole Gunnar Petersen. and as late as 2006, it was the World Championship gold in the Soling.

Hans Fogh grew up in Copenhagen in a family of gardeners, who expected that he would take over the family business.  He started sailing at age 17 in Hellerup Sailing Club and was soon offered a job with his sailing friend Paul Elvstrøm, who also sailed in Hellerup.

From Elvstrøm he learned his skills as a sailmaker and in 1969 he emigrated to Canada and started Elvstrøm Sails Canada.  Later he started Fogh Sails, which later became the Norths Sails Canada.  In addition, he operated Fogh Marine, which his son Morten took over some years ago.

Hans Fogh also helped to design the first sail for the world's most popular dinghy class - the Bruce Kirby designed Laser - and was the first person to sail the Laser.

Ever since he moved to Canada more than 40 years ago, he has maintained relations with the family in Denmark, his great friend Paul Elvstrøm and Hellerup Sailing Club, which he always visited a few times a year.

Hans Fog participated in six Olympic Games.  Four Olympic participations for Denmark, where he won Olympic silver in the Flying Dutchman in Naples in 1960, and two Olympic participations for Canada, where he won Olympic bronze in the Soling in Los Angeles 1984.

In 1985, Hans Fogh was honored in Canada by being inducted into the Canada Sports Hall of Fame.

Probably more than you wanted to know about the definition of Cruising but if you are interested in finding out more about the exciting 2014 Cruising Season make sure to mark April 11 in your calendars.

The Cruising Kick Off night will begin at 7pm with an overview of this year's ports of call and some key changes to the Cruising program.  It will be an informative and entertaining night and if you wish to have dinner first please make reservations with the Club.

Also, anyone with pictures from cruises over the last few years, we would appreciate getting them so that we can augment the slide show which everyone enjoys.  Please email pictures to portofino@rogers.com .

Look forward to seeing you there.
Heineken Regatta in St. Maarten

- Wes Shera, ABYC Senior Member

__________________________________________________________

Three members of the ABYC, Tim Connolly, Wes Shera and Jon Wigley were crew on Derek Hatfield's Volvo 60 Spirit of Adventure at the recent Heineken Regatta held March 6-9 in St. Maarten.

The 16 member all Canadian crew (only two professionals on the boat) had several days of training prior to the regatta and the boat was rated for the regatta using a code 0 rather than the spinnaker, given the size and complexity of the spinnaker operation. In the first race around the island of St Maarten Spirit of Adventure was awarded a trophy for being the fastest non-spinnaker boat around the island - 3 hours and 34 minutes, 3 minutes ahead of its closest competitor. For the overall regatta Spirit of Adventure placed 5th. The three ABYC members played roles as trimmers, navigators, tacticians and helmsmen. All agreed that it was a fantastic learning experience and as the regatta slogan goes "Serious Fun" - it certainly is the best annual regatta in the Caribbean.

Jon has produced a short video clip which gives you a flavour of the experience. It can be found on UTUBE at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7RECF7Soc8    Enjoy!
