Call for volunteers for the Board Secretary Role
At the last General Meeting our VC Planning, Bob Brew showed an image of an individual seeing his own shadow.  Bob claimed that it was our Commodore (me) seeing my shadow and therefore dooming us to 6 more weeks of winter.  At the time I thought it was funny, however, now that we're well into February with little signs of a break in winter's grip I am not so amused.  Since Bob says that I am capable of forecasting the weather then I now say that we have only 2 more weeks of winter and then it will be time to start planning launch.

One of the jobs available in the Job Jar is that of the Board Secretary.  This is a volunteer assignment that involves recording and posting the minutes from monthly Board of Director meetings and Club General Meetings.  We use word templates and each board member submits their respective reports to make it as streamlined as possible.  Anyone wishing to inquire about the role may contact me directly via email commodore@abyc.on.ca .  It's a great way to learn about how our club operates and plans for the future.

I would also like to thank Diane Reid for sharing her amazing sailing adventure with us last Thursday at the club.  Diane proudly carried the ABYC  burgee and the Canadian flag for the past 2 years as she qualified and competed internationally.

Yours,
Bob

Love was certainly in the air Friday Night!

Another fun filled evening with many of us dancing to the tunes of Ed Smith until 11 p.m.

Thank you Sandra Conley and Mai Meret for helping with the table decor.

Thank you to our staff (Albert, Cheryl, Kristen, Mike) for helping create the romantic ambiance, and for an overall great job and a special thanks to Chef Paul and your team for another delicious dining experience.

We look forward to seeing you all next year.

Thank You Diane

On Thursday, February 13th, 40 or so members and guests were treated to a special presentation by Diane Reid.  She included several video clips from the Mini Transat from camcorders on her boat and the boats of other competitors.  Through these videos we were able to understand just how far and how dangerous a campaign Diane had waged in her quest to follow her Dream.

So thank you Diane for sharing your dream and for going where no other Canadian woman sailor had ever been all while flying the ABYC burgee.

Diane is now off on the road until the end of April with 20 presentations that began in Sodus Bay on February 15th and will end in Kingston in late April.

This Snowy Owl photo was taken Sunday about 6 p.m. in the channel between Green and Red docks.

An invasion of Arctic Snowy Owls is moving south in record numbers, many of them taking up residence in airports.  Driven by a search for food, the birds are appearing in large numbers in central and eastern Canada and the American northeast.  Some are even behaving like snowbirds, travelling as far as Florida.

Experts aren't sure what's causing this "irruption," a term used when birds migrate outside their normal range.  But there are likely two reasons, says Toronto Zoo curator, Kevin Kerr.  There may have been a collapse in the Arctic lemming population - a favourite food source - or a boom during the last owl breeding season that has increased competition for food.
