_______________________________________

Long time members of ABYC will be saddened to hear of the passing of  former Senior Member
Grant Charlesworth on January 28, 2014.  Grant and his wife Carole were members of ABYC from the early 1960's until the mid '80s when they moved out of the city.  When they were not sailing, Grant & Carole were busy ABYC Members with Grant looking after the club motors and Carole a valuable member of the Slipknots.  Grant had been a member of the Marine Unit of the Toronto Police until he retired.  Their last boat in ABYC was Fluid Drive, a Whitby 26.

We extend our condolences to Carole and their sons Scott and Bart.

Funeral arrangements had not been completed at the time of publication however they will be announced on the website of the Ainsworth Funeral Home, Wellington, Ontario:

New Cruising Fleet Captains
_____________________________________

Don and I have really enjoyed acting as your Cruising Fleet Captains for the past 3 years.  What a tremendous opportunity it has provided for us to meet a lot of fabulous folks and to get comfortable traveling to new clubs.

The cruising program wouldn't be the success that it is without the support of the members.  Thank you for both hosting and attending cruises.  Most of all, thank you for sharing your stories, for your highly developed sense of the ridiculous, for not taking yourselves too seriously, and for your welcoming ways.

Please join us in congratulating Mary and Chris Pappas on becoming our new Cruising Fleet Captains. They have volunteered to take over as cruising coordinators for this upcoming season.  Mary and Chris are well known around the club for their very generous volunteering and warm personalities and they have been quite active in the cruising program - both volunteering as cruise hosts and attending numerous events.  Many of you will recall Chris from the toga cruises.  ;-)

Mary and Chris are two of the nicest people we have encountered at ABYC - always with a friendly and genuine greeting for people and we can't think of anyone better suited to take over the cruising program.

Thanks and fair winds, Mary and Chris.

A 50/50 raffle in support of the LYRA 2014 Regatta was held at the General Meeting on January 27, 2014.

A total of $465 was raised with $232.50 going to the LYRA Regatta and $232.50 going to our lucky winner Pat Hedley who was sitting in as secretary for the meeting.  Pat's comment after the meeting was I never win anything.  Well this time you did Pat.

Thank you to Petra Fischer and Diane Reid who helped with the ticket sales and Gladys Humphrey for drawing the winning ticket.

ABYC Lecture Series -
Thursday, February 13th - Diane Reid
___________________________________________________________________

Our own Diane Reid returns to our lecture series to tell her captivating story of the pursuit of her dream to compete in and finish the 2013 Mini Transat.

Diane will talk about her highs and lows during this 3 year journey which ended when
she arrived in Puerto Calero in the Canary Islands early on a  Sunday morning after sailing 300 miles downwind with only her jib.  In short she had broken a spreader bracket and was still having trouble with power on her boat.  The bracket was the top one on the port side.  The only reason the mast stayed up was because she was able to straighten the mast and pull the checkstays on causing the mast to compress the broken fitting which still had some rivets holding.  But this meant that with both checkstays on she couldn't hoist the Main Sail.  The only reason the mast didn't fall down was that she was very fortunate with the weather and that she could do the 300 miles on one tack slightly off the wind.

Come out to hear Diane's fascinating story of resilience and determination as she sailed under the ABYC burgee during her 3 year journey.  Diane told her story during 7 seminars at the recent Toronto Boat Show and now she is bringing her story home to her friends at ABYC.

Come out and enjoy an evening with Diane and an opportunity to thank her for raising the ABYC racing profile in Europe and other Ports of Call.
