ABYC conducted cold water safety training last Saturday.  Falling in the water this time of year is very dangerous and our Safety Committee felt that we would all benefit from having some of our members who work on or near the water trained in how to deal with someone who fell in the water. Check your boats
Mast Up Storage was completed for seven boats this fall.  As was conveyed several times this process is still a trial.  All boat owners are encouraged to regularly inspect their boat to ensure their boat and the boats around them will not encounter any damage over the winter.

This caution applies to all boats stored on the club property, not just the mast up boats.

Cold Weather Safety Training
____________________________________________________________________

Considering the amount of work performed by ABYC members around water, our Safety Committee arranged for a short training session for some of the people who work on or near water.  This training included information on working near water in cold weather including a discussion of hypothermia and the 1-10-1 rule:

You have 1 minute to get your breathing under control
10 minutes to self rescue yourself
1 hour before you become unconscious from hypothermia

Also, 5 things recommended for working around water in cold weather:

  • Tethering
  • Wearing of PFDs at all times
  • Buddy System - Always at least 2 people working together
  • Wearing of helmets, proper shoes and proper gloves
  • Having a knife and a whistle as part of your gear
Also discussed and practiced were cold water rescue including training in the proper way to throw a rescue line to a person in the water and a demonstration of how to deal with falling into ice cold water.

A demonstration of how to deal with falling in our frigid water was conducted by one of the trainers and ABYC member Dan Heimann.  Wearing special suits, the two men entered the water and showed the class how to escape the cold water using various methods.

LYRA 50/50 Raffle
at General Meeting

____________________________________________

As part of our fundraising and sponsorship program in support of the 2014 LYRA Regatta we are holding a few 50/50 raffles.  In November the first raffle was held at the Awards Night Dinner and Joanne Wright won $365 and $365 went to the LYRA budget.  Our 2nd raffle will be held at the General Meeting on Monday, January 27th.

Tickets are:
1 for $5
3 for $10
7 for $20

This could be your chance to walk away a winner like Joanne and by purchasing raffle tickets you will be helping us to provide the best LYRA Regatta since 2007 (which ABYC also hosted)

Change to New Members' Night

___________________________________________________________________

New Members' night is being moved from Friday evening to Saturday evening.

Be sure to mark Saturday, April 5 on your calendars, the annual ABYC New Members' Night.  We invite all members to attend this important event to welcome new members to ABYC.  It is an opportunity for members who have joined over the past year to meet many, more established members of the Club as possible in a fun and relaxed manner.

Pile Driver back in action
____________________________________________________

Last week we reported that the Pile Driver had partially sunk due to the adverse weather conditions that we have been having.  We're happy to report that due to a lot of work by Stephen Trevitt and his crew, the water has been drained from the Pile Driver and it is now back in action.  The guys spent Saturday driving piles in the Dry Sail area.
_____________________________________________

The following description of what happened was written by Stephen Trevitt:

The pile driver partially sank sometime around Tuesday, January 7th.  That was a particularly cold series of days, with the wind out of the southwest.  We believe wind and waves caused ice build up on the one side of the barge, tipping it to the point where water could flow in through the hatches on the deck.  It ended up resting with one side on the bottom and the other side up in the air.  Fortunately it didn't tip all the way over!

On Saturday the 11th, we tried a few ideas for lifting it - pumping air in, swinging the backhoe's weight to the other side, chipping off all the ice - all to no avail.  The next day (Sunday) a small group of four built two wooden 'tubes' to fit over the (now underwater) hatches, held in place by clamps.  The idea was to create a sealed tower we could use to pump the water out.  The towers worked, but the high volume gas powered pump (borrowed from the Sarah Ashbridge) wouldn't prime with the hose and fittings we had. Monday night one of the team bought the necessary fittings and Tuesday that small group used the pump to successfully re-float the barge. There was some excitement as we pumped it dry - it kept tipping further and further over to the point where we had to pump water IN to one of the flotation tanks, and use the weight of the backhoe to stop if from flipping.

The barge is very "tippy" when it has water sloshing around inside, so we had to be pretty careful moving around until it was pumped dry.  Our lead bosun, Mike finished the pumping on Wednesday but on Saturday (the 18th) there was more water in both the flotation tanks and the main hull so obviously there is a small leak somewhere now too.  Nevertheless, we pumped it dry and managed to drive 7 sheets in the dry sail area - the most we've driven in one day.

1st Annual ABYC Clothing Swap a Big Success!

 - Alison Booz

Brava! to Kathy Deemar, Linda DeRusha and Barb Baniuk for organizing and running the Clothing Swap.

The dining room was filled with all kinds of coats, pants, tops, dresses, boots, shoes, and accessories. Items were sorted by type and laid out on the tables so we could see what was available.  All the clothing was in good condition, clean, with all the buttons, working zippers and so on, so we could be assured of having good quality, wearable clothing from the start.

Everyone had great fun trying on the clothing and modelling it for honest opinions from the others.  We found that if something didn't fit one person, it would fit someone else.  Everyone went home with at least something (and some people took home lots of treasures).  I am thrilled to have found a pea coat - I've always wanted one!

Despite everyone filling their bags with clothing "new to them", there were still plenty of items leftover to be donated to charity.

We all agreed it was a great afternoon and a super idea.  We hope to do this again next year and perhaps expand it to clothing for men and kids too.  So, as you are going through your wardrobe over the next year, keep things aside for next year's Swap!
