Hey Santa!

Santa made a big impression on this young cutie when he visited ABYC last Sunday.  ABYC's children were amazed by a magician, sang Christmas carols and then watched Santa arrive by water courtesy of the Toronto Police Marine Unit.  To the organizers, well done!

Membership, Safety & other matters
- Elizabeth Sloss, Senior Vice Commodore

Despite my reticence to write in Ship2Shore I just wanted to confirm to everyone that in fact I am working at my new post but most of the work to be done at this point is the background noise of running a club, so there is little of detail to post.

First and foremost I encourage anyone who wishes to change their membership or to withdraw from the club to do so before the end of this month - that is the deadline for changes in membership status.  It is critical that you give your change to Lidia in writing so she can bank the changes for us.

As the Senior Vice Commodore is the head of safety at the club and I happen to be both that and a lawyer, of course safety issues have come slamming into my consciousness as I get a better understanding of exactly what we do on this property to run a club with volunteer labour.  With Jim Allen, I will be spending lots of time looking at the safety issues around here and we encourage anyone with any safety training or experience to come forward to work with us.  It is critical that we take this piece of what we do seriously and we rely heavily on the goodwill of our members to volunteer to provide us with any special skills they may have.  I encourage you to talk to Jim if you have anything you feel you can contribute on the safety front.  Furthermore, please feel free to bring any safety issues to our attention.

I am keeping up-to-date on things like the pending changes in legislation that may affect us, thinking particularly of the changes in the new not-for-profit legislation which may or may not be brought into force, and the accessibility legislation.

On a personal note I welcome Diane Reid back to the club after her very brave sailing on the other side of the pond.  I was staggered by her willingness to brave the wind on the ocean this year and was sad when I watched her little boat settle on shore the last time as I tracked her progress in the MiniTransat. Congratulations Diane on a fight well fought and I am glad you are safe and sound.

I wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a wonderful, windy, not-stormy New Year.

If you're looking for a gift for the sailor (or anyone) in your life, we have great dry fit shirts for ladies and men.  You can see the sample shirts and price list in the regalia case in Duffy's or go to

We also have a new toque (with fleece liner) that would make a nice stocking stuffer!

Regalia is available for purchase through the office or by contacting me at regalia@abyc.on.ca.

All special orders from haul-out have arrived.  Please pick your order up from the office as soon as possible.  If you are not able to get to the club during office hours just let me know and we can make other arrangements.

Finally!  After months of refurbishing the pile driver tower and replacing the ageing motor, and a frustrating morning spent dealing with one little problem after another, we drove two steel sheets this past Saturday.  Only 44 to go!

That work should go easier now that we're over the start-up hump, and soon we can start the tie-back repairs, installing the walers and the new cap.  But you can expect to hear us thumping away for many Saturdays to come.

That's a lot of effort by a lot of members behind each thump!

As always, I am only an email or phone call away.
