2013 LYRA Boat of the Year

__________________________________________

For the first time since LYRA began awarding its Boat of the Year award in 1996, an ABYC boat has been awarded the prestigious trophy for 2013.  Nine of the 14 previous winners have come from south shore clubs.

The LYRA Boat of the Year trophy recognizes the best sailing season by a boat which participated in the LYRA annual regatta.  To be eligible, boats must do the short course racing at the regatta and at least six other races or regattas from a list of more than thirty counter events on Lake Ontario and Eastern Lake Erie (for more details, see www.lyrawaters.org/BOTY.html).  The selection process starts with quantitative analysis (how many boats a candidate beat out of how many it faced during the season) and includes subjective evaluation of the level of competition at different events.

Bob Porter from the LYRA Executive Committee presented the trophy to Stephen at the LYRA Annual General Meeting at ABYC on Sunday.

During the 2013 campaign Crime Scene won her division in the Freeman Cup and the Susan Hood long distance races, the Youngstown Levels, and the ABYC, PCYC and QCYC regattas.

A Tip of the Hat  to Stephen Trevitt and the crew of Crime Scene for this achievement!

2013/2014 Lecture Series kicked off

- Jim Allen & Petra Fischer, Co-Chairs, Winter Lecture Series

___________________________________________________________________________

The first lecture for this season attracted 40 people for an evening of gathering new weather knowledge.  The presentation was given by Morton Biback, a senior lecturer with the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron.

I'm sure everyone came away with some new piece of weather knowledge.  I now know the weather reasons behind the saying "Red Sky at night Sailors delight.  Red Sky in morning sailors take warning"

We passed the beer jug for Toonie Thursday donations and raised $76.60.  Each night we will be passing the jug and at the end of the year we will give the money to the Junior sailing Program and the Corinthian Fund.

2015 Pan Am Games
- Dave Steenbergen
_________________________________________________

The organizing committee for the sailing event at the 2015 Pan Am Games is beginning to recruit volunteers.  We are starting by filling six supervisor positions (the titles are standardized across all sports):

Supervisor, Measurement:  working closely with the International Chief Measurer, responsible for managing the boat measurement process

Supervisor, Sport Competition: working with the Principal Race Officer, responsible for recruiting and managing the race committee (effectively the PRO's local deputy)

Supervisor, Field of Play Services and Equipment - responsible for on-water safety, equipment, and communication

Supervisor, Venue - responsible for shore facilities, athlete services, VIP/officials services, and onsite first aid and doping control

Supervisor, Administration - responsible for managing to the event budget, providing IT support, etc.

Supervisor, Volunteers: responsible for recruitment, training, and coordination of volunteers (especially shore-side)

If you would like more information about any of these positions or you have any suggestions for possible candidates, please e-mail me at dave.steenbergen@rogers.com.  I don't have a lot of information yet about volunteering for race committee or shore-side jobs in general, but if you are interested I would be happy to share what I know.

On the "Road" again!

Diane had to take an unplanned "technical stop" in Portugal late last week (See her blog/Facebook Page for all the details).  The heavy conditions caused some damage to the boat plus she was having a lot of trouble with the batteries.  She went in to a Portuguese port for a few days, hauled out the boat, did the necessary repairs, got new batteries and came out smiling.  The chart below shows Diane well behind the main body of the racing fleet however she is back on the water and sailing fast - that's what matters to her at this time.
