Fall 2013 Sea Wall Repair
- Bruce Morrison, VC-Marine
________________________________________________________________

The sea wall repair project has begun in earnest.  The contractor has cut off the concrete cap and all can see that some of the sea wall disintegrated under the pressure of that work.  The pile driver repair is almost completed so we can soon begin driving sheets of steel.  Come out and lend a hand.

Yard Cleanup

I want all member's property left on the ground or attached to the fence moved away from the fence and relocated to your cradle, especially your ladders.  I will repeat this message for the next two weeks and then clean up the fence area and dispose of everything left behind starting Dec 1, 2013.

Back from a couple of weeks of travel.  I was in Victoria B.C. two weekends ago, it was nice to walk around the harbourfront and see all the boats still in slips.  I do miss the smell of salt water (but not the tides that go with it!).

We are now into our "winter" season and the usage of the clubhouse changes now to work parties, seminars and socializing.  The Halloween party was a huge success; we even got a visit from the "Mayor"! (I am not sure if that is a good or a bad thing........).  Many thanks to Natasha and Alex, new members this year for putting on a great evening.  This past Sunday was the first annual ABYC Artists Show.  All I can say is that I was blown away when I walked up the stairs.  The dining area and dance floor was filled with paintings, photographs, quilts, jewelry and knitted goods.  To accompany the show was some complimentary wine and cheese thanks to Jonathon Lewis.  Thank you Terry Fagan for coming up with this idea and running with it.  It made for a very enjoyable Sunday afternoon.  I would love to see more functions like this in the club.

This past Friday evening we had a visit from the Alexandra Yacht Club house band; I believe that it might have been someone's monumental birthday.... The dining room was packed, the food was good and all had a great time.  I do ask that if you are planning to come down on a Friday evening please call ahead and let the staff know.

I will be having my first House Committee meeting on November 20.  If anyone is interested in attending please let me know at vcmember@abyc.on.ca

"It's going to be an Epic Run of Endurance" - Diane Reid

After a month of delays and an abandoned leg, Diane's 2013 Mini Transat has started.  They were all clear on the starting line about 0945 local time (3:45am Toronto) this Wednesday morning.  Diane has commenced her 3,700 mile, non stop run from Sada, Spain, south to pass between the Canary Islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, then across the Atlantic to finish in Guadeloupe.

Mini Transat's weather forecast around Cape Finisterre calls for ENE winds at 16/21 knots with gusts to 35, slamming into 3.5M seas coming from the NNW.  Wet and lumpy getting the westing out of Sada before heading south past Cape Finisterre.

Diane and the other English speaking skippers share their pre-start thoughts in a new video:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x174861_mini-transat-english-sailor-quotes-prestart-11-nov-13_sport

The non-stop course, through the Canaries to Guadeloupe, make this the longest leg in Mini Transat history, which dates back to 1977.  When Diane was advised last week, that the originally scheduled stop in the Canaries was dropped, she declared:  "I am seriously stoked for this.  It's going to be an epic run of endurance."

This is Diane's position in the fleet (Red Boat) shortly after this morning's start.  3700 miles to go!

More Job Jar clarification
- Michelle Wolfson
__________________________________________________________

Recently I got a phone call from a member who made an effort to use the Job Jar to sign up for work in advance.  The member was very frustrated and disappointed that they didn't get to do the job that they signed up for.  I got this statement:

I signed up for a job in the Job Jar  but no one contacted me by email with any details?

How do I get work if no one contacts me about jobs that I sign up for?

Oops, somewhere there is a break in communication.

All projects in the Job Jar are linked to a supervisor and every time someone signs up for a job, the project supervisor gets an email alerting them to the sign up.

If you are a supervisor of a project in the Job Jar you need to make sure that:

 - Your email address is correct in the Job Jar....(look under the My Profile Tab)

  - You respond to sign ups and let the applicant know any details about the job.

Your email might just say "Thanks, see you Saturday November 2nd'" or it might say "Please bring your hard hat, construction boots and a hammer".

If you have questions about who the project supervisors are or which projects are attached to you name please contact me.

Weather Seminar -
Toonie Thursday

____________________________________________________

Tomorrow, Thursday, November 14th is the first of our 2013/2014 Toonie Thursdays Lecture Series.  These lectures will take place the 2nd Thursday of every month through May.  A full schedule will be posted soon.

Tomorrow evening Morton Biback and Craig Stewart of the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron will present a 3 hour in-depth weather overview of what to look for when on the water.  The lecture begins at 7:00 and will run until 10:00 PM.

You will have plenty of opportunities to ask those weather questions that you may have encountered during your years of sailing or power boating.

New to this year's series is Toonie Thursdays.  At the end of the evening we will pass a hat and if you enjoyed the evening we encourage you to donate a Toonie (or more if you like).  The proceeds during the year will go to the Corinthian Fund or the Junior Sailing Program and Junior Racing Team.

Mayday Mayday Mayday!!!

7 November, 2013 9:25:51 AM EST

After 46 years assisting boaters in trouble on the waters of Lake Ontario, the tides have turned; PARA now needs your help.  The starboard engine on Pickering Auxiliary Rescue Association's vessel PARU has failed, taking the boat out of service.

Our dedicated volunteers would like to get back to the business of assisting mariners in distress.  But with an engine down and the other one being twenty years old, both need to be replaced.  Until then, PARU and her volunteers are docked.

We need to raise $115,000 to purchase and replace the engines.  To get started, we hope you will join us at our first fundraising event:  British comedy at a local dinner theatre in Pickering.

Tom, Dick and Harry
Herongate Barn Theatre

Tickets are $60 per person, which includes dinner and the performance.   Tickets are available online http://para-rescue.org/dinner-benefit-2013/or call Gary Endicott at 416-287-3327 .

If you cannot attend but would like to help, we gratefully receive donations online http://para-rescue.org/donate/ or by mail by sending a cheque to: PARA, 1235 Radom St. #89, Pickering, Ontario, L1W 1J3.  Tax receipts will be issued for donations of $25 or greater.

We look forward to seeing you, your friends, family, neighbours and colleagues at the event. It promises to be a great night!

Your financial assistance will ensure we can continue to help those in trouble on the water.

Please answer our Mayday call.

Arts & Crafts Show

Works by Elizabeth Kimball

Last Sunday saw the first of what will become an annual event at ABYC. More than 25 members participated in "Gallery ABYC", showcasing more than 80 pieces of engravings, oils, pointalism, ceramics, quilts, photographs, etc. featuring scenes of sailboats, landscapes, flowers and a popular nude sketch.

In addition, a table was set aside for showing five water colours and oils painted by Elizabeth Kimball, a past ABYC member, who passed away a few years ago.  As well, there was a copy of her childrens' book, "The House That Stephen Built", describing her childhood summers with her uncle (Stephen Leacock) spent at the famous Ontario humourist's home near Orillia.

The number of artists participating was a marvelous surprise and their excellent work overflowed the dining room and into the bar area.  More than 65 people viewed the artists' work and enjoyed a glass of wine (provided by Jonathon Lewis) and a variety of cheeses.  A very pleasant and classy afternoon was enjoyed by all.
