Many challenges were overcome during this year's haulout.  The latest change for ABYC was hauling boats with their masts up and taking them to the rail yard.  Well done to everyone involved.

Well, another haulout weekend, I can't believe it's my 23rd. time "pushing on the rope", how time flies.  I found it fun this past weekend to catch up with members that I haven't seen in awhile and meet members that have joined in the past year.  We sure are a diverse group of people, but we all have one thing in common, our love of sailing and power boating.  With such a diverse group, we all have different expectations, wants and needs from our club.  Food and beverage is especially challenging.  From the layout and décor of the clubhouse to the food and wine menu, we can't please everyone.  The portfolio of member services encompasses the physical plant of the clubhouse (maintenance), food and beverage service (including catering), regalia, and communications and marketing.  At this time we have committee chairs in the major departments; however we do not have a "house" committee.  I envision this group as a small committee that does not get into operational issues, but more to determine where we are, where we want to go and how the heck do we get there.  If anyone has any interest in getting involved please contact me at vcmember@abyc.on.ca

Coming up is the Halloween Party this coming Saturday.  Get on your best costume and join in the fun.

The excitement is building for the Saturday, Nov 2 All Day Work Party!  This is a great opportunity to come down to club for a few hours along with your fellow members and get the club property ready for winter.  We have a number of inside and outside jobs - something for everyone.

I would like to highlight the North Wall Repair job - we are kicking this off at the all day work party and we need:
4 people to remove fender boards
4 people to remove interlocking brick
2 people to cut some metal
1 - 2 mechanically inclined people to help re-power the pile driver (that sounds pretty cool!)

We will need a team of 8 people to continue working on this repair throughout the fall and winter during the regular work parties.  Actually, it would be nice to have a few more volunteers as we know that not everyone can always attend each and every Saturday - but the work needs to continue.

We also have yard work, trophy polishing jobs, regular fender board work, chain replacement (yes it continues!), so take a look and if you would like to sign up for a job you can send an email to abycworkparty@hotmail.com or sign up in the job jar.

Here is the list so far:

Cruising Awards Night
- Don Sturgeon & Debbie Dockray, Cruising Captains
_________________________________________________________

The Cruising Awards Night will be held in January again this (next, actually) year.

We would like to have your Mileage and Ports of Call information by October 31 at the latest so that we can order the necessary flags and trophy plaques.  Also, please make note of any of the cruising trophies that you are specifically trying for (e.g. Harbourmaster's Hat).

2013 Cruising Hosts who already own sweatshirts should deliver them to Liz Heron, Linda DeRusha or the Club Office so that they can be embroidered before our meeting in January.

Thanks to everyone for making this another fun season and especially thanks to our Cruising Hosts for once again going above and beyond in keeping our cruisers entertained and fed.

Haulout Messages

Successful 2013 Haulout
- Bruce Morrison, VC-Marine
__________________________________________________________

It is with the co-ordinated efforts of many teams and individuals that make haul out the success it is every year.  We safely hauled close to 220 boats last weekend using the two cranes and the marine railway.  This is the first year that I had the honour to oversee the entire operation and I have a new appreciation for the dedication and skill of those involved.  I hope this is a complete list of the teams and team leaders and if I have missed any I apologise now.

Thank You To:

Crane Yard Chair - Anthony Mirvish

Rail Yard Chair - Dan Marcil

Harbour Master - Paul Lefneski

Chair of Safety - Stan Gap

Dock Ladies - Alison Booz

Rail Boat Riders - Ron Partch

Cradle Crew Co-ordination - Gerald Hamers

Tallow Crew - Nancy Wilson

Winch Operators - Johnny Ballman

Coffee crew - Joanne Wright

First Aid person - Henry Blais

Rail Communications - Susan Bosley

Rope pullers - Everyone

And a special thanks to Rennie Stobbs the Club Manager, Mike Kovacs the yard bosun and yard staff, Kitchen, Serving and Bar staff.

Mast Up Storage was completed for seven boats.  As was conveyed at the last general meeting this process is still a trial.  All boat owners are encouraged to regularly inspect their boat to ensure their boat and the boats around them will not encounter any damage over the winter.  This caution should apply to all boats stored on the club property, not just the mast up boats.

There is one other thing that needs to be addressed.  Due to the sea wall repairs, the sailing school docks will need to be stored near the mast crane.  All masts need to be dismantled and stored in the mast racks.  I have inspected the area and there is ample room for all masts.

Crane Haulout
- Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chair
_________________________________________________

A total of 148 boats, including seven with their mast-up, were safely and successfully hauled by the cranes.  Despite rain all-day Saturday, a late crane arrival on Friday, and the new challenges created by the inclusion of the mast-up boats, the teams on both crane crews rose to the occasion and pushed through two very long days to complete the planned haul out schedule.

Heartfelt thanks are extended to all of the crews, dock ladies, boat riders, yard and kitchen staff for their efforts.  I would also like to recognize the following individuals:

Crane foremen Roy Little, Neil Payne and Paul MacDonald; crew organizer John Moody; signalmen Joe Simpson, Bob Wilson, Steve Trevitt and Paul MacDonald; Radio Coordinator Alison Booz and her Dock Ladies; Boat Rider Organizer Rebecca Crumlish; dock foremen Paul Brennan, Alfie Nonnewitz and Cam Hind; cradle chiefs Stewart Beak and Kate Driscoll; Equipment Managers Claude Michaud and Robert St. hilaire; tractor driver Bernie Caron; Harbourmaster Paul Lefneski; and Club Manager Rennie Stobbs.

An additional word of thanks to Paul Brennan, Neil Payne, Steve Trevitt, Giles Osborne and John French who stayed late Saturday to help disassemble the large crane (which for those who did not get to see it closely was more complicated than any crane we've ever had at the club).

The layout of the cradles in the yard prior to haul out is also a full-day activity and in the pre-haul rush I forgot to thank the team that came down to help with this important activity.  Thanks are therefore extended to Chris Deeley, Bernie Caron, Juris Altraks, Rick Itenson, Fergus Mallon, Andy Levy, Jarrod Armstrong, John Gibson, Alfie Nonnewitz, Scott Elliott, Stan Gap, Doug Workman, Jim McDermott and Ron Occhipini.

Thanks to the Rail Yard crews
- Dan Marcil, Rail Yard Chair
_________________________________________________________________

After another hard working haul-out weekend I would like to send some thanks to our rail yard crews.  This includes the tallow crew who kept things slippery, the cradle crew who did the heavy lifting, the winch operators who kept boats moving, and the folks who repaired cradles as needed throughout the day.  To Rick Humphrey, Gord Buchanan, and Susan Bosley many thanks for their efforts as the Rail Communications team. And of course Johnny Ballman and the team that got us going again with minimal delay when the railcar jumped the tracks -- thank you much.  To the boat handlers at the mast crane, many thanks.  To everyone out there rain AND shine, rope pullers one and all, thank you for your tireless efforts, patience, and camaraderie -- may you hear my voice in your dreams this winter, waiting for launch!  To the many people who had a kind and encouraging word of support throughout the weekend many, many thanks.

On a more personal note, I want to thank Bruce Morrison for his guidance, knowledge, and organizational skills that actually get it all done, in a weekend!!!  THANK YOU Bruce.

Another Safe Haulout
- Stan Gap, Safety Committee
____________________________________________

We did it again.  We hauled out all the boats without an injury or major problem.  I would like to thank all of you for keeping safe.  I would especially like to thank all the team leaders in both the crane and rail area for making safety a priority.  Also, thanks to the members of the Safety Committee, Susie, Jim and Helmut for their hard work last weekend.

Lets keep safe while we winterize the fleet.
