Our members are helping to ensure that ABYC's history is not lost.  This group recently gathered and spent many hours going through boxes of documents & photographs in an effort to catalogue as many items as possible.   All this material has been maintained by ABYC Life member Al Stapleton and we are all grateful to him for the work he did to keep our archives up-to-date.

As our season comes to a close, it's time for YOUR feedback...

Fall has arrived, and our sailing season will soon be complete. The committees are about to start planning and budgeting for next year's sailing programs.

This is YOUR chance to help shape our programs.  All ideas and suggestions are welcome; if you have a criticism, please try to include suggestions for addressing the concern.

Our programs and chairs are:
- Racing & Racing Seminars (Brian Chapman)
- Cruising (Don Sturgeon & Debbie Dockray)
- Adult Keelboat Learn to Sail (Peter Woodall and Diane Schulman)
- Co-op Dinghy (Grant Dietrich)
- Co-op Keelboat (Emily Sawolak)
- Sailing School (Jeff Dejean)

Please reach out to the program chairs directly, or email me and I'll forward your thoughts.

Dry Sail area CLOSED starting November 2nd.
- Stephen Trevitt
_______________________________________________________________________________

This winter our plan is to repair the harbour wall adjacent to the large dry sail crane.  On Saturday, November 2nd. we will start removing fender boards and the concrete cap.  This means that BOTH cranes will be out of operation from that day on.  We also need all Dry SaiI boats removed from the area to give access to the demolition crew that will be sawing the cap off - dump trucks and excavators need a lot of room to work!

This section of wall is 72' long, twice the length we've done in one winter to date.  I realize closing the crane is an inconvenience but we need to start right after haulout so we can be done in time for launch.  And of course if you feel like helping out, that's always appreciated.  We need help before haulout getting the pile driver ready (welder, steel cutting), as well as help after haulout doing the repairs to the wall (Saturdays).

If you have any concerns about our plan for the dry sail area, please contact me.

I sincerely wish to thank Calum Semple for his tremendous efforts in being the Race Committee (RC) Coordinator.  His time is up and will be missed.

Moving forward that leaves a vacancy.  The RC Coordinator position is key to running a smooth operation.  If interested, please contact me at "brian@uksailmakers.com".

I invite (welcome) your feedback, should you have any thoughts on how to improve our sailing experience (either cruising or racing), please don't hesitate at dropping me a line.

Your Sailing Committee does not sleep... we are already scheduled to meet continually over the next 8 months, reviewing the past and building on future seasons.  Many good but doable challenges ahead.

In closing, the Sailing Committee would like to welcome the new Board ... we are at your service.

Volunteer Contribution Opportunities
with ABYC's Sailing School
_________________________________________________________________________________

The ABYC Sailing School has grown by leaps and bounds under the leadership of Finley and Sophie McEwen over the past five years, and I would like to congratulate them on the program's growth and phenomenal success, and thank them on behalf of parents, students, and the club.  They leave big shoes to fill, and I am grateful for their offer of continued help both in transition and also their ongoing advice in the future.

A key initiative for Sailing School is to develop a broader volunteer support base.  We need members with just about every skill set, communications, marketing, boat maintenance and repair, policy, financial expertise, fundraising, trailer maintenance, and the list goes on.  It's a chance to help to build the future of our club, as today's junior sailor is tomorrow's member.   If you're interested in supporting the Sailing School please send a note to abycsailingschool@bell.net.

Outside Race Results for
Ashbridge or Stapleton Awards
- Rear Commodore Paul Brennan
_________________________________________________________________

Any skipper who wishes to be considered for the Ashbridge or Stapleton award, and has results outside of LYRA & LORC that they wish the selection committee to include, needs to submit them to rearcom@abyc.on.ca by Sunday, October the 6th.

(The events book set the deadline as September 30th, but with the excitement of our general meeting and elections, I forgot to send out a reminder, so this is the one and ONLY extension!)

Just a few weeks left to sail ... enjoy them!

Critical Yard & Harbour tasks

- Bruce Morrison, VC-Marine

_______________________________________________________________

The following tasks must be completed before Haulout.

1.  Move the ways in the parking lot this weekend.  This will be done at 11 AM on Saturday, Oct. 5 and I need 60 people.
Everyone participating can log 1 hour against job  "502 -5340 Haulout Preparation - Layout ways in the parking lot".

2.  The ways and the Club's cradles need TLC and repairs before haulout.  These hours can be logged against job "521 - 7510 2013 Pre Haulout Way and Cradle repair.

3.  Attach the last  finger to the floating dock.  These hours can be logged against job "501 -611- 2013 Pre Haulout Dock Repairs - Install and secure the last finger dock".

4.  Mark out and lay out the steel cradles.  These hours can be logged against job "502 - 5340 Haulout Preparation - Layout Steel Cradles".

5.  Dismantle and store Green Dock Patio screens and tents.  These hours can be logged against jobs "502-6020 2013 Pre Haulout Green Dock Patio".  Remove screens and store and "502 - 6020 2013 Pre Haulout Green Dock Patio - Remove tents and frames and store".

 6.  Service the rail track and fill in the potholes.  These hours can be logged against job "502 - 5340 Rail Bed - Rail Cleat Repair" and "502 - 5340 Rail Bed - Regrade Gravel"

FIX YOUR CRADLE

All steel cradles need to be brought up to the club standard:

"The steel cradle must have a minimum of six (6) uprights on the sides with six (6) cradle pads and be able to fold flat"

This is not an appropriate repair to a cradle

Mast-Up Storage

Seven boats have been selected for the mast-up storage out of ten applications received.  It was not possible to accommodate the others due to logistics considerations, although we are also tight on space this year.  The owners of the boats selected for mast-up storage have been notified and Roy Little and I will be following up with additional information regarding the process.  The boats selected are:  Saratoga, Blue Moon, Day Dream II, Feisty Lady, Satori, Trinity and Sandpiper.

Yard Marking and Cradle Layout
The yard will be marked for cradle layout on the morning of Saturday October 5 starting at 8 AMAll cars must be out of the main parking lot (including the area along Blue Wall) prior to that time.  Your cooperation is appreciated.

The steel cradles will be laid out on Thursday, October 10.  This is an all-day exercise that will start at 9 AM.  All cars must be out of the ground (all areas) by this time.  We will have no choice but to tow any cars remaining on the grounds.

Volunteers for the cradle layout would be appreciated; please contact me directly.  The club provides lunch and the time counts towards club work hours.

Boat Storage Drawing
The boat storage layout is largely complete but the drawing showing the location of all boats will not be posted for at least a week.  It will be posted in the club lobby, in the window of the club office just above the guest book.  Once posted, please check the drawing to identify your boat.  Do not assume that your boat is in the same location as it was last year as some changes are made every year.

Notification of Off-Site Storage and New Member Storage
At present, most people who are storing off-site have confirmed their intention to do so with me.  If you are planning to store off-site and have not notified both the club office and me, please do so immediately.  It is also requested that any boat new to the fleet this year - even if the owner is not a new member - indicate their storage intentions if they have not already done so and especially if you are not sure whether your boat is being hauled by crane or on the railway.  Boats that have steel cradles are not automatically assigned to the crane yard if they are deemed more suitable for the marine railway.  Please note that while the office staff keep the club database current, information about how the boat is hauled is not always accurate, and sometimes boat dimensions or (especially) displacement have not been provided to the club.

Sling Marks, Cradle Assembly and Cradle Condition
Please identify and mark the lifting points (i.e. the points at which the slings will be placed when we lift your boat) on your boat.  Sling mark stickers are available at no charge from the club office.  If you are uncertain as to where to place the marks, your boat's manufacturer is the best source of information.  Alternately, I am happy to assist.

Cradle assembly is the responsibility of each member.  Review the condition of your cradle as your boat's safety on the hard depends upon it.  Last year, there was a cradle failure that, fortunately, did not damage any other boat.  We did have to bring in the large crane to remove it.

Questions?
If you have any questions concerning the crane haul out, please contact me.

New Members bring fresh ideas
- Terry Fagan
_____________________________________________________________________

One of the many strengths of ABYC is how new members are welcomed and drawn into the various activities that are the life blood of the Club. However, this is a two way street, with new members asked to "show up", when convenient to them, whether Wednesday games night, Friday Fine Dining, Saturday morning breakfast or work activity or to just stand at the bar.  Eventually someone will say "Hi" and answer all those questions that we all had when new to the Club.

This is particularly important at this time of year as we will all be going through the process of removing and storing our masts, preparing and assembling our cradles and winterizing our boats.  To this end the next three Wednesdays are "Ask Someone" nights at ABYC's Duffy's Lounge and Bar (No hats, please).  This is an open forum where all questions will be answered from 6:00 o'clock on by the greatest group of experts, and they will tell you that they are, that the Club has to offer.  The purchase of a beverege is not required.

An example of new members stepping up are Natasha Brahmachari and Alec Beitinger , who joined us in August with their Hunter 27.  They are already on the Entertainment Committee and have suggested many new ideas as this year's events were finalized and next year's drafted.  This is an example of how current committees and activity leaders should seek out new members and take the time to have them "get up to speed" with the regular team.  With a bit of instruction they will be contributing for years to come.

Mike McDonald, V.C. Members Services, also brought fresh ideas to the table and Bruce Morrison, V.C. Marine was pleased to welcome Natasha and Alec to the Club.

"Darkness falls across the land; The midnight hour is close at hand

Creatures crawl in search of blood; To terrorize y'alls neighbourhood" 1

We recently joined ABYC as senior members and thought it would be a good idea to join a committee.  We wanted to belong to a committee where we could contribute our skills to the ongoing success of the club so we decided to give the Entertainment Committee a try.

When we arrived at the committee meeting for the first time, we were a bit apprehensive however, the entire team made us feel very comfortable.  Alex and I were able to share our ideas in an open, friendly and supportive environment.

We discussed the calendar of events at length and when the opportunity to organize the ABYC Halloween Party arose we immediately jumped at the chance.  Halloween is one of the most popular holidays of the year.  What's not to love about Trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving or the opportunity to dress up in different characters?

We left the Entertainment Committee meeting feeling like we made a contribution and getting involved has proved to be a great springboard for making new friends!

Please join us on Saturday, 26 October at the ABYC annual Halloween Party.  Grab that funky hat, tie, googles, sequins, feathers or whatever else you may find in your closet and let's all do the "Mash, The Monster Mash; It's a Graveyard Smash." 2

Shellback Club
________________________________

With the end of sailing season rapidly approaching, what's an ABYC sailor to do for the next 6 plus months?  One very interesting activity is to join sailors from all over the GTA and attend meetings of the Shellback Club.  Don't know about this group or you would like to know more about them?  Read the following article submitted by Shellback Skipper Jim Taylor.
________________________________________________

THE SHELLBACK CLUB.

"Keel Laid 1934"

Celebrating 80 Years.

The Shellback Club is celebrating 80years and, as usual, we have selected speakers presenting a wide range of nautical and maritime topics.  We plan for 25 meetings loaded with good food, friendly men and women who like nautical topics and interesting informed speakers.

The Shellback Club officially started in February 1934 and met at Eileen Bradley's Tea House on Adelaide Street but had its roots earlier.  Starting in 1924, some of the crews of large racing sailboats from RCYC met weekly in the summer to organize crew duties.  By 1934, these crew meetings had morphed into The Shellback Club as other sailors from Clubs in the area liked the idea of sharing lunch and sailing lore...and even singing a shanty.

To be "Shellback" today only requires attending a lunch meeting and joining everyone in singing a sea shanty:

Location:  The location, as in past years, is the RCYC main dining room at 141 St George Street.

Timing:
We start promptly at 1215 hours and finish about 1330 - 1345 hours.  The guest speaker starts about 1245 hours.  Come early to enjoy the company and a beverage.  All the usual beverages are available at Club prices.

Seating and Dress:
There are no prearranged tables and dress is mostly smart casual.

Costs:
Lunch costs $18.50 including all taxes and service and we suggest $2 for the Dory which includes a draw ticket to possibly win a nautical book in the weekly book draw.  Costs are the same as last year.  There are no annual fees or initiation fees.  Once a year, we suggest a $20 contribution to pay for basic communication costs and the minimal costs of operation.  Funds not needed each year are donated to local youth sailing charities.

Guests:
Guests are always welcome and confirmation regarding attendance is not required for Shellbacks or guests.  Come when the spirit or the topic moves you but come often!

Meeting Dates:
This year the meetings start on October 16 and continue October 23 and 30.  November dates are 6, 13, 20 and 27.  The dates for December are 4, 11and 18.  The Christmas party is on December 18 at the Mimico cruising Club.  After the Holidays, meetings start on January 8, 2014 and continue each Wednesday until April 16.
Interesting guest speakers will continue through the "Shellback Season" on a variety of nautical and maritime topics and adventures.

Plan to come to The Shellback Club on Wednesdays all Fall, Winter and early Spring!

Skipper: Jim Taylor         416 487 2506.

Mate: Marjorie Patterson 416 536 8110.
