Volunteer Contribution Opportunities
with ABYC's Sailing School
_________________________________________________________________________________

The ABYC Sailing School has grown by leaps and bounds under the leadership of Finley and Sophie McEwen over the past five years, and I would like to congratulate them on the program's growth and phenomenal success, and thank them on behalf of parents, students, and the club.  They leave big shoes to fill, and I am grateful for their offer of continued help both in transition and also their ongoing advice in the future.

A key initiative for Sailing School is to develop a broader volunteer support base.  We need members with just about every skill set, communications, marketing, boat maintenance and repair, policy, financial expertise, fundraising, trailer maintenance, and the list goes on.  It's a chance to help to build the future of our club, as today's junior sailor is tomorrow's member.   If you're interested in supporting the Sailing School please send a note to abycsailingschool@bell.net.

Call for Volunteers

- Geoff Huck, Communications Committee Chair

_______________________________________________________

Webmaster

The ABYC Communications Committee is looking for a webmaster to replace Linda DeRusha, who is becoming chair of the Regalia Committee.  We want to thank Linda for her dedicated and effective leadership in this important position for ABYC.

The ABYC webmaster has responsibility for setting consistent policies regarding content and style on the site, for providing content where necessary, and for approving and adding content to the site from other Club committees, in consultation with the Communications chair.  The webmaster also responds to inquiries about the website from both Club members and nonmembers.

The webmaster should be familiar with HTML and a Content Management System like WordPress, but does not need to be an expert programmer or web designer (though of course some experience in those areas would be a plus).

All webmaster tasks can be accomplished from the comfort of your own home.  So, if you're looking for a swell position to fulfill your volunteer member contribution to the Club, get in touch with Geoff Huck, Communications Chair, at geohuc@rogers.com.

Communications Committee Liaison

The Communications Committee is also looking for a person to serve as a liaison with ABYC's working committees.  The liaison will coordinate with the chairs of these committees or their designates to ensure that important information about upcoming events, activities, opportunities, policies, and procedures is distributed in a timely fashion to Club members as appropriate, through Ship2Shore or other channels.  This position is suitable for those who are familiar with or wish to become familiar with the actions and operations of Club committees.  If you are interested, write to Geoff Huck, geohuc@rogers.com.

There will be no overnight parking in the main yard the evening of
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4
due to the yard being laid out for haulout the next morning.

ABYC WELCOMES NOTED BOAT DESIGNER
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2013 AT 7:30

The World Cruising Club has as the guest speaker for their initial evening of the 2013-14 season Mr. Robert L. Mazza, noted Naval Architect, Professional Engineer, member of the team that designed a number of the Hunter series of sailing boats and an active racer of International 14's.

Mr. Mazza will be speaking on the evolution of sailboat design from early unballasted ships to modern concepts in hull design and sail shape.

Prior to Mr. Mazza, there will be a silent auction and a number of books available. The WCC welcomes all ABYC members, both racing and cruising, to attend what will be a fascinating and informative evening.

______________________________________________________________

The season is almost over, alas, so it is best that we plan to make the most of it.  Be sure to show up for the Archie Walker Race on Saturday.  The early forecasts promise a fabulous fall day of sailing, unlike last Saturday for the Summerville, where only the very intrepid finished the race on a cold and rainy day.

Congratulations to Stephen Trevitt, who sailed Five-Fifteen to victory in the IRC 2 fleet ahead of Murray Gainer and the Lively crew and Larry Harrison and the crew of Merlin 2 in third place.

IRC 3 was won by Winston Beckett and the Fortitude gang with Paul McDonald, Karen Albert and the Vertigone team second.  Third place in IRC 3 went to Charlie Alksnis in Trimpus and in fourth place was Starwatch with the Flynn family and crew.

The white sail fleet was won by Shaun Carey and his team on Whiplash while Double Time helmed by Sam Robbins placed second.  Harvey Harman and his crew aboard Sail La Vie were third, while the PHRF fleet was won by Eli Gershman in Black Swan with Bla ck Pearl sailed by Eriks Kalvins was third.

Meanwhile our Juniors starred at Fall Cork:

Matt Sherar did ABYC proud finishing 10th in the Laser Standard rig fleet.  Not so Junior Jeff Dejean was 27th, but placed well ahead of many of the other masters present.

In the Radial fleet, ABYC instructor and coach Sarah Douglas finished SECOND in the 36 boat fleet.  In 29ers, Linor Berezin and Katherine McEwen finished fourth overall.

Our Opti sailors did well, with Martin Staadecker finishing 8th, Rowland Goddard 9th and Hunter Dejean 14th overall, and third in the girl's division. Congratulations to all!

Full results can be found at http://www.cork.org/2013-results/.

Finally, Tim Connolly and the crew of Humidor represented ABYC at the J24 North Americans in Newport.  Alas, no Canadian teams fared very well, with the top Canadian team being that of Rossi Milev's Clear Air crew placing 14th.  Rossi considered it a good wake-up call as he hasn't spent much time in the J24 lately but he plans to do the Worlds in Newport next year, as do most of the other Canadians who were present.

See you all for the skippers' meeting on Saturday!

That's all for this week.

__________________________________

For the last few years the Summerville has combined a big windward/leeward (or leeward/windward) sausage with a coastal component to the Gibraltar buoy and back.  This year we dropped the coastal component to avoid interfering with the International 14 Worlds.  The start was off ABYC with wind from the SW at 7-10 knots. The lake mark was three miles out at 220 degrees; IRC boats did three times round for an 18 mile course, while PHRF spinnaker and whitesail boats went twice around for 12 miles.  Cold rain lasted for the entire race but 16 hardy boats and crews finished.

This race counts as part of the ABYC offshore series.  For ABYC awards, the race will be re-scored counting ABYC boats only.  Some boats in the ABYC PHRF fleet raced the Summerville in IRC while others sailed in PHRF.  For ABYC scoring purposes only, IRC boats from ABYC were given a finishing time at the end of the second time around so they could be scored against the PHRF boats.  ABYC results will be found on the club race results page.

A Busy Weekend for ABYC's
Junior Race Team
- Coach Mike Goldfarb
________________________________________________________

It might be the middle of September, but the ABYC Junior Race Team just finished one more busy weekend.  It began on Friday with Martin Staadecker, Rowland Goddard and Hunter Dejean heading down to Kingston to compete in Fall CORK.  Joined by Coach Mike Goldfarb and Special Guest Coach Eric Goldfarb, the team was in for a fun but cold regatta.  Saturday brought rain and heavy winds in the morning.  Although the winds settled a bit, the rain did not.  The wet ABYC crew (and parents) unloaded in the rain and headed out to the water.  Despite the rain we still saw a great day on the water (even with the fog).  Martin had some great races, including four in the top ten.  Martin's best race was a 6th overall and his drop was a race where he capsized on the downwind.  Rowland continued on his amazing progress from the summer for his best regatta yet!  Rowland's highlights include two sixths.  Rowland also had the misfortune of capsizing during a race. However, with determination he made a huge recovery and finished that race in 12th.  Overall Rowland finished the regatta in 9th proud to be mid-fleet in a very competitive fleet.  Hunter arrived a bit nervous about the strong winds but was determined to get out there and do well.  Demonstrating some spectacular skill, Hunter's top race was 9th to get her 14th overall and 3rd place female, which earned her a spot on the podium.  Hunter was thrilled to be joined on the podium by two ABYC coaches Sarah Douglas, Linor Berezin and Katherine McEwen, who were racing in Laser Radial and 29er at Fall CORK.

On Sunday, the remainder of the Junior Race Team headed over to ABYC for their regular day of fall training.

Coach Mike Goldfarb and Guest Coach Gordie Budning worked with thirteen Opti Sailors on a cold Sunday at the club.  Despite the cold they all went out on the water and took part in training.  We saw five athletes capsize (and commented that the water was warmer then the air), but still everyone had fun.

With all that the Opti Race Team accomplished this weekend you would never know that it is now fall.  The ABYC Junior Race Team will continue to train at the club on Sundays for the remainder of September and October, continuing to improve their racing and sailing skills!

ABYC Haulout

Crane Haulout
- Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chairman

Mast-Up Storage

Seven boats have been selected for the mast-up storage out of ten applications received.  It was not possible to accommodate the others due to logistics considerations, although we are also tight on space this year.  The owners of the boats selected for mast-up storage have been notified and Roy Little and I will be following up with additional information regarding the process.  The boats selected are:  Saratoga, Blue Moon, Day Dream II, Feisty Lady, Satori, Trinity and Sandpiper.

Yard Marking and Cradle Layout
The yard will be marked for cradle layout on the morning of Saturday October 5 starting at 8 AMAll cars must be out of the main parking lot (including the area along Blue Wall) prior to that time.  Your cooperation is appreciated.

The steel cradles will be laid out on Thursday October 10.  This is an all-day exercise that will start at 9 AM.  All cars must be out of the ground (all areas) by this time.  We will have no choice but to tow any cars remaining on the grounds.

Volunteers for the cradle layout would be appreciated; please contact me directly.  The club provides lunch and the time counts towards club work hours.

Boat Storage Drawing
The boat storage layout is largely complete but the drawing showing the location of all boats will not be posted for at least a week.  It will be posted in the club lobby, in the window of the club office just above the guest book.  Once posted, please check the drawing to identify your boat.  Do not assume that your boat is in the same location as it was last year as some changes are made every year.

Notification of Off-Site Storage and New Member Storage
At present, most people who are storing off-site have confirmed their intention to do so with me.  If you are planning to store off-site and have not notified both the club office and me, please do so immediately.  It is also requested that any boat new to the fleet this year - even if the owner is not a new member - indicate their storage intentions if they have not already done so and especially if you are not sure whether your boat is being hauled by crane or on the railway.  Boats that have steel cradles are not automatically assigned to the crane yard if they are deemed more suitable for the marine railway.  Please note that while the office staff keep the club database current, information about how the boat is hauled is not always accurate, and sometimes boat dimensions or (especially) displacement have not been provided to the club.

Sling Marks, Cradle Assembly and Cradle Condition
Please identify and mark the lifting points (i.e. the points at which the slings will be placed when we lift your boat) on your boat.  Sling mark stickers are available at no charge from the club office.  If you are uncertain as to where to place the marks, your boat's manufacturer is the best source of information.  Alternately, I am happy to assist.

Cradle assembly is the responsibility of each member.  Review the condition of your cradle as your boat's safety on the hard depends upon it.  Last year, there was a cradle failure that, fortunately, did not damage any other boat.  We did have to bring in the large crane to remove it.

Questions?
If you have any questions concerning the crane haul out, please contact me.
