Crane Haulout 2013
- Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chairman
___________________________________________________

Planning for this year's haulout is underway and, although haulout is almost eight weeks off, there are a few announcements of which all members whose boats are hauled by crane should be aware.

Friday September 6 is the cut-off date for notifying the office that you intend to haul out with us this year.  After that date, boats otherwise accepted into the club fleet will not be hauled this year.  Deletions from the haul list can be made later than September 6, but not additions.

Any member who usually stores off-site or anyone deciding to store off-site this year, should inform the club office and me of that fact.  This is important because the club database is used to plan the yard layout and it is essential that we account for and know the status of all boats.

August 30th is the cut-off for boats whose owners wish to haul and store with mast-up.  There has been a good response to this proposal.  I am currently reviewing the list with respect to logistics.  Please note that while every effort will be made to accommodate all requests, the additional time required to haul each boat, the need for special lifting gear, and the need for the entire process to fit into our haulout operation means that it may not be possible to accommodate all boats that request mast-up storage.  Priority will be given to boats whose characteristics fit into the overall process:  ties will be resolved on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Please note that all decisions are mine alone, and will be final.

With respect to process, the current plan is to haul the hydraulic trailer boats and mast-up boats on Friday October 18, however this is not yet final.

With respect to hydraulic trailers, we have signed a contract with Drew Marine under which the trailers will be modified to a tab system, which should be easier on the crews who work with the trailer boats (hopefully, no more need to move heavy steel bars).  This should result in a faster and less strenuous process.  Drew Marine has two trailers and we may use both of them at haulout.

The Etchells 22s held their Canadian Championships at CORK this year which featured at least two former Olympians.  Winning the event was Hank Lammons with Dirk Kneulman and John Clark (Camielle's brother, Ron's son).  Second place went to Allan Leibel with ABYC's very own Mike Hren.  Former ABYC member Darryl Suderman was aboard the third place boat and Richard Weld sailed on the 8th place boat.  Congratulations to Mike and his team!

Congratulations also to Matt Sherar who placed 24th in a very competitive Laser Standard Rig fleet in the Olympic Class regatta.  Well done!

Ryan Wynott competed in the I14 regatta.

EYC had a very disappointing turnout for their event this year, both with respect to the number of boats and the poor turnout from the wind, but ABYC boats fared well.  Stephen Trevitt and the Crime Scene crew were second in IRC 2 while Murray Gainer and the Lively bunch were fourth.  Fortitude and the Winston Beckett team were third in the IRC 3 division with the Flynns and the crew of Starwatch 5th.

In the white sails division, Martin Gibb on Consort was third.  Also competing for ABYC were the J24s Black Swan (Eli Gershman) and Humidor (Tim Connolly).

NOTICE!!!
ABYC's Laser / Laser Radial sailors haven't had enough yet!  We are planning a "regatta" this coming Saturday.  Competitors meeting will be at 11 am in the dinghy area and the first horn will be at noon.  The racing will be followed by a BYO BBQ.

ALL ARE WELCOME!  Over half of the Lasers in the dinghy area haven't been used yet this year, so come on out and have some fun.

And while you are looking at your calendars, don't forget the Summerville on September 14th.  Remember, this is a "Club Race" and replaces the Fall Bell Buoy for which there are many trophies.  A party will follow the race, so be sure not to miss it.  In addition, September 7 is the QCYC Open which always has a great party.  This year, the T-Birds will be racing not only on Saturday, but Queen City is kind enough to host the Districts so we will be racing both Saturday and Sunday.

TTFN.

This past week, four members of the Junior Race Team-Championship Fleet, attended their final regatta of the summer, the Opti Canadians, at Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club.  77 sailors from all over Canada, Bermuda, the United States, and the United Kingdom came to Montreal, Quebec to compete in four days of racing.  Sailing on the river brought varying winds and challenging conditions such as strong current, weeds, and isolating shifts.  The competitive fleet made it difficult for sailors to get a good start, and resulted in a quarter of the boats getting black-flagged in numerous races.

Jack Peabody had a great start to the regatta, placing 27th and 19th in the first two races.  In the final race, Jack was one of 24 people to get black-flagged and had to sit out from the race.

Quinten Beelik's results improved tremendously as the regatta progressed. Quinten placed 21st and 19th in the last two races and has qualified for the North Americans!

This was the first big regatta for Rowland Goddard. He set a high personal goal and improved with each day. Rowland's best race was 31st. and he twice rounded the windward mark in 18th. place.

Like Rowland, this was the first big regatta for Hunter Dejean. Despite some struggles with starts, Hunter had impressive downwind legs, where she was able to pass as many as 10 boats. On the last race, Hunter was finally able to start in the first row of the start line and finished with her personal regatta best of 45th..

Overall the sailors had a great experience racing against the best Opti sailors in Canada, and ended up with great results!

The final results were: Quinten Beelik- 32, Jack Peabody - 40, Rowland Goddard - 50, Hunter    Dejean - 65

Do I dare say ... that most unfortunately our season is coming to an end.   We wish to utilise and obtain every possible opportunity to squeeze in a Fall series, and there is one scheduled in our events book:  Sept 3, 5, 10 and 12th .  Appreciating that doing so takes some logistic and personnel fielding from a race management end, I wish to receive a sense of the numbers of yachts wishing to partake.

Please feel free to contact me at brian@uksailmakers.com and let me know your preference.
