In September, Finley & Sophie McEwen will be wrapping up their last year leading our Junior Sailing School.  As plans start for the next year, we want their replacement(s) ready to go.  It's premature to thank Finley & Sophie for their work on this until the handoff is made, but expect that in the fall!

Some names have already been put forward, but I wanted to ensure that if anyone else had any interest in this position they were given the opportunity to discuss the position and if interested, be considered.

I'm not going to say it's an easy job.  It may be one of the most hardest in our volunteer structure, with staffing and planning, then overseeing an operation that runs 9-5 five days a week through the summer, and a majority of weekends from mid May to October!  The role includes elements of school principal, project manager, truck driver, politician, handyman, accountant, HR specialist, camp counsellor, and chaperone.

Of course, with hard work comes the potential for great reward.  In my race committee work, I've had an absolute blast dealing with young sailors.  They have FUN, and watching them grow and and develop their skills from year to year is an immense reward.

If you'd like to be considered for this role, let me know (rearcomm@abyc.on.ca).  It's a challenging, multi-year commitment, but I can absolutely 1000% guarantee that you will never be short of volunteer hours!

Mast Up Task Team

Notice of need to submit request form for those interested Mast Up Storage

By next week a request form will be available at the ABYC office, and possibly within the ABYC website.

Please note that submission of this form will NOT guarantee that the particular boat will be accepted.  Overriding consideration will be given to yard layout and the overall planning requirements for the total ABYC fleet, as well as a review of the particular boat, and cradle, for suitability.

Should this application be accepted for the coming season, a surcharge of $500 will be levied, charged $250 as part of the fall billing and $250 as part of the spring billing.

The 2013 /2014 season is a continuation of the Mast Up trial, and does not construe a commitment on ABYC's part to maintain this option in the future.  Should ABYC decide to continue with the program, re-application will be required for each season.

Applications must be submitted to Anthony Mirvish (c/o ABYC Office) no later than 31 August 2013 for consideration for the Fall 2013 exercise.

Acknowledging Member efforts
- Bruce Morrison, VC - Marine Services
_______________________________________________________

As the new Vice-Commodore Marine Services I would like to acknowledge the efforts, skill and dedication of the members who launched the two wooden sailboats that were under repair in the rail yard.  Last Saturday John Ballman, Peter Brooks, Bernie Caron and Joe Simpson gave up over 5 hours of prime sailing weather to move two boats out of the way so Velsheda and Ijssel could be launched and able to join the harbour fleet.

Well done and THANK YOU.

I am on Linked In, there's a Starwatch blog, 12 years of LORC/LYRA results for Spectra and KC1, 4 years of Rear and Commodore articles in Spar & Prop from the club next door, 3 years of minutes and meeting reports as Rear Commodore and SRVC here.  Or the curious are welcome to talk, call or email anytime.

Gillian and I are beach dwellers - really right by the lake in a 1930s 3 story walk-up - hear the waves at night and see the sparkling waters first thing every morning.

I have 3 children - Jeremy with the Bank of America in Calgary (2 grandchildren there), Andrew taking physiotherapy at UBC (I'll need that) and Katy launching her own dress design company Colicot.  She recently sailed from Baja to Hawaii on a 43 footer and is getting married next July 26th in Point Roberts.

Why run?  Well I'm a 'hands on the wheel' kind of person, Capricorn, UTS (with Len), Xerox so Spock logical and addicted to problem solving.  I have a lot of relevant experience and enjoy writing and speaking to you and all the outside 'stakeholder' groups on the very wide range of topics related to our club and our sport.

Platform, yes there's a platform.  It's all about the sailing.  ABYC does a lot of things extremely well and will continue to set high standards - in competition, as reciprocal 'gold standard' hosts, as a financially sound organization.  We do have a limited amount of money.  I am more limited than any one of you - I'm working on Freedom 95 - and any further senior fee increases will have a zero sum effect.  We have priorities which must be met.  I've worked on the seawall and we need a way to make significant repairs over the next 24 months - that is JOB ONE.  We all need to understand the rules and stop spending valuable member hours explaining, defining, defending, challenging them.  We need to stay OPEN to new ideas and new approaches which could support the club's future.  We need everyone on board and invested in the process.

Results count. Do the right thing.  Why aren't more people sailing?

Pat (my spouse and life partner) and I joined ABYC over 20 years ago because we grew up along the bluffs and had made the beach our home.  I learned to sail as a Sea Cadet in Ashbridge's Bay so, I've be in the area for most of my life.  Together we raced our first boat, White Squall (CS 30) and cruised the lake.  We were club cruise co-ordinators for 3 years and co-hosted the club picnic twice.  Our daughters grew up around the club and we enjoyed many club cruises together as a family.  I've served on the board twice.  First in the mid 1990's as VC Member Services and more recently as VC Marine helping Roger Marsh and many members complete the dock project.  Along the way I've been a part of many club committees and projects such as membership, club house review/redesign, drafting the club values, and outdoor work rebuilding walls, etc..

In work life I recently retired from Maple Leaf Foods as V P Leadership Development and now work with Pat offering consultant services in Business and Organizational Development.

I have been a member of ABYC for about 9 years and share a 32 foot race/cruiser (Myrmidon) with my life partner Mark Powell.  I race twice a week and Mark and I cruise as often as we can.  I am a lawyer in private practice working for myself, my specialty is health law but I do a wide variety of different types of work for people.  I also do quite a bit of teaching and do and have always done lots of volunteer work.  I have sat on a wide variety of boards over many years and have chaired two of them and for the past year I have been a member of the ABYC By-law Committee.

I am Canadian, but moved away for several years to be with my wife, Alodie, in Belgium.   Europe was wonderful, but all the while I was eager to return to the Great Lakes.  I grew up in Windsor, Ont. on Lake St. Clair.  I was a junior member of the Windsor Yacht Club, where my parents are still members.  While in University in the 1980's and together with a partner I owned and operated windsurfing stores in Windsor, Chatham, and London.

In Europe I enjoyed working as a retail consultant specializing in Retail Specialty Stores.  When I returned to Canada in 1998 I joined the Volvo Car Corporation.  I've stopped working for now to spend some time with my kids, but while at Volvo my principal role was as the National Retailer Development Manager.  Part of my responsibilities was to ensure the company would have the infrastructure in place to accommdate future plans.  Really, to make sure we had enough buildings in the right places with the right number of properly trained people to carry out the future sales plans.

I am confident my experience in that environment equipped me with the tools necessary to carry on the good work already started by our recent VC's of Planning and our Planning Committee.

Alodie and I live in the Beaches neighbourhood with our two boys.  One of my favourite things is to be able to walk to our boat and enjoy our club.  As a relatively new, and I like to think, younger member, I look forward to seeing this club's continued success for many years to come.  And, I would be pleased to have an active part in helping it along.

Mark Boat & RC Help please

August 17/18 - we could use one more mark boat crew for this coming weekend and a driver and crew for

August 24/25 for the EYC regatta.

August 24 is the second family race at ABYC.  Anybody interested in running this please?  This is an easy race to run and a great way to get some RC experience.

Thank you
