This past weekend, National Yacht Club hosted LYRA.  Several ABYC boats competed in both the long distance and course racing.  In addition, ABYC Race Committee volunteers were on hand to run a course.

In IRC 2, Crime Scene was racing against bigger boats than she is used to for the most part, and managed a fourth place in the course racing.  In the Centennial, Stephen Trevitt and the gang placed second in division and overall, while in the Freeman they were first in division and fifth overall.

IRC 3 saw Starwatch ably sailed by the Flynn family and friends capture 3rd place in the course racing, and 5th in the Freeman.

Cliff Walkington's Gypsy finished 3rd in the R Boat class, and Martin Gibb, (Consort) Placed 3rd in the PHRF whitesail division.

Next weekend ABYC will be hosting the Ontario Laser Masters Regatta.  Only those over 35 years old are allowed to compete.  Meanwhile, the Juniors will be headed up to Ottawa.

The following weekend ABYC will be hosting the Beneteau Great Lakes Championship.  Meanwhile, many of ABYC's Race Committee volunteers will be headed back to Kingston for CORK.

Back at the ABYC Open Regatta, the C&C99 fleet made a special presentation to Frank Hudson., (Plum Danish III) There was a brief write-up in S2S at the time, but I since received the following from Dexter Halsall:

"I have attached a "Bear's Eye View" of the ABYC 2013 regatta.

We made a special presentation to Frank Hudson for his support of sailing and the C&C 99 Fleet.

Frank has never won a regatta in the C&C 99 One Design series over the years.  He has won a handful of races and finished 2nd. in 2009 in the Swan's Cup (The C&C 99 Season Series Cup).  Frank probably never gets the recognition that some of the other ABYC racers get because he may not get mentioned in the awards ceremonies but he has represented ABYC around the lake and it is something that ABYC should be proud of.  Frank always has a smile on his face and an upbeat comment to make.  He has shown great commitment and support of the C&C 99 Fleet for the past 5 years while he has owned Plum Danish III.  He has helped make the C&C 99 Fleet one of the more actively raced and certainly the most enjoyable fleet on the north shore.

Captain Bear

I am often visiting other clubs around the lake (and elsewhere) for the purpose of judging.  Many of the events I choose to do are youth events.  There are many reasons why I like youth events, and one of those reasons is that generally speaking, the younger sailors want to learn and are eager to talk to the judges about the rules and what they may be doing correctly and incorrectly.  Their enthusiasm is inspiring.

My favourite event so far happened right here at ABYC.  Mike Goldfarb, who is the coach of the Opti Green fleet (the Green Fleet consists of the youngest racers and those with little or no racing experience) invited Petra Fischer and myself to talk to the students in the program about the rules.

They were keen beyond expectation.  Petra and I thought we would have to work hard to keep them interested, but that wasn't a problem at all.  They had a million questions (mostly from Danny) but they all had stories to tell and situations to describe.  It is clear they are having fun, which is first and foremost why they are there, and although some of them are ready to move out of the Green fleet and into  the white, (such as Hunter), it is clear they are all friends.  It was a privilege to spend time with such a keen group of young sailors.

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't pass along a compliment I received from one of Ontario Sailing's volunteers.  He told me that DJ Bott is one of the most pleasant coaches on the circuit with whom to deal.

Our ABYC Juniors and their coaches are doing us proud.

The ABYC Junior Race Team - Green Fleet just completed a very busy week.  With several team members off to camp, on family vacations and various other things, a smaller team of Danny Assimakopoulos, Nathan Latka and Bridget Latka, with Coach Mike Goldfarb, headed over to the Royal Canadian Yacht Club (RCYC), for the YODE event this week.

The week started off slow on Monday, when our plan to sail over was postponed by risks of thunderstorms and rain.  We packed and waited at ABYC, until we knew the weather was safe to make our way into the Toronto Harbour.  As we had a late departure, we sailed to the end of the spit, were towed to the Eastern Gap and then sailed over to RCYC.  On Tuesday and Wednesday our team took part in a two-day clinic at RCYC.  The eleven-sailor clinic consisted of our team and the RCYC Team with Coach Ryan May and Clinic Coach Chris Watters.  With the help of the three coaches, the eleven athletes were able to work extensively on rigging, starts, upwind endurance and downwind sailing.

After two days of learning new skills and making new friends, everyone got ready for a two-day training regatta.  On Thursday we saw some stronger winds and waves, which is weather our very own Bridget Latka excels at.  With four races on the first day, Bridget got three 1st. place finishes and one 2nd.  Nathan, who had a rough start with an 11th. and 10th. pulled it together at the end of the day with a 2nd.and 3rd.  Danny; who was the youngest in the fleet, fought through the wind and the conditions.  Danny completed every race, with his highlight being a capsizing, which he thought was the best part of the day!  Danny had a 6th. place finish in the final race.

Friday brought a lot less wind, which made it easier for Nathan and harder for Bridget.  Nathan gained some spots with two 4ths. and a 3rd.  Bridget worked with her coach on light wind tactics and was able to rebound from an 8th. and got a 3rd.  This hard work helped her hold on to her placing.  Overall, at the end of four long fun days, Bridget placed 1st. overall (winning a scooter), Nathan 3rd. overall (winning some boat parts), and Danny 11th. (completing every race and improving each race).  The team had a great time!  Quite happy with YODE, we were towed back to ABYC Friday afternoon, arriving minutes before the start of the thunderstorms.  Overall, it was an excellent week for ABYC's Opti Team.

This week, our Championship Fleet prepares to go to Opti CORK, in Kingston, which starts this Friday and goes through the weekend.
