Yearly slip exchange with DYC

Friday July 27, 28, and 29th

____________________________________________________

ABYC and DYC have been exchanging slips since 2007 and 2012 will mark the 6th year for this event.  We typically exchange about 12 boats per year and this year we have 10 signed up already and DYC have a unofficial list of 12 boats signed up.  I have been the host since we came to this arrangement with DYC and again this year I am pleased to host this event at the Port Dalhousie Yacht Club.

Most of the boats from both clubs prefer leaving on the Friday to give both our members and visitors to ABYC the opportunity to enjoy each club's amenities and the city proximity to both clubs is always a good distraction for all.

Could you let me know and Roxanne our Office Administrator by email which boat is planning to be in DYC on Friday the 27th so that I can make arrangements for you to have a slip on Friday.  If you have not yet signed-up, please do so ASAP given the number of boats coming to ABYC from DYC and the food that I have to plan for.

Again for the sixth year, Amarone II will be slow cooking 15 pounds of a Kosher beef brisket for a good 24 hours that I will then lug onto the boat along with a Gazpacho and a lentil and chick pea salad.

See you in DYC

We received a wide variety of articles and photographs from Members this week so we decided to combine everything into one big eclectic article:

The BIG Thunderstorm
Last Friday evening ABYC was on the receiving end of a very severe thunderstorm.  Very high wind gusts swept our area, a tree in Bay Belle Park was struck by lightning, dinghies were turned over and sent scurrying across the parking lot.  There are also reports of sails being unfurled and torn by the wind.  All in all, a very nasty storm!

Mary Pappas sent us this photo of the boats heeling with the wind during the height of the storm - very dramatic!  A severe seiche also occurred during this storm.  No damage was reported from that.

Ryan Wynott
took a photo of the tree that was struck by lightning.  As can be seen, much of the bark was stripped from the tree.  It's fate is unknown at this time.

Cindy Sampson
sent a photo of the yard with dinghies and other equipment strewn about.  Note the small fire in Bay Belle Park that was started by the lightning.

Once the storm had passed, Bruce Hannah was examining the damaged tree in Bay Belle Park when he spotted a baby raccoon at the top of the "Lightning Tree".

Someone was certainly having a "bad hair day"!  Either Bright Eyes or Lucky would appear to be a good name for this little fellow.

Once all the thunder & lightning had passed, Trixie Hoyer caught this beautiful rainbow.

Dinghy Racing

From proud Grandparents
Roger Marsh & Penny McDonald

As proud grandparents (of both boys) this feature is definitely biased but, the Bronze Group of ABYC's Sailing School just participated in the Steerers Regatta at PCYC and grandsons (and cousins) Ryan Brownsdon (15) and Cameron Harbaruk (13) finished in 2nd place in the 420 Bronze group.  This is their first regatta together. That's Rear Commodore Stumpy To You!

Ever mindful of environmentally friendly recycling initiatives, our intrepid Rear Commodore proudly displays the new patio furniture that was rescued out of PCYC's waters in the aftermath of Friday's storm.  The new trophy was Mother Nature's gift for a successful run of the Alpha course during this past weekend's PCYC 4 Sisters regatta (...and no, he didn't fall in when lifting it out of the water, or otherwise overly strain any major muscles.)

If it is July, it must be PCYC Race Month!

The Port Credit Yacht Club annually hosts three major events in July, starting with the PCYC LORC Open Regatta.  Then came the Lake Ontario 300 which lasted for days and days and days. Even the volunteers were exhausted by the time the first boat finally crossed the finish line on Tuesday morning.  One boat didn't finish until almost noon on Thursday.   Yikes!  As reported last week, ABYC boats did very well in the endurance contest and the ABYC team of Crime Scene, Lively and Umi Taka proved victorious in the Skippers' Plan Club Team Challenge.  Congratulations to all!

Preliminary results were posted last week, but the full final results can be found at http://www.yachtscoring.com/event_results_detail.cfm?Race_Number=1&eID=765 <http://www.yachtscoring.com/event_results_detail.cfm?Race_Number=1&eID=765>.

This past weekend, PCYC hosted the Steerers' Junior Regatta on Thursday and Friday, followed by the Four Sisters Regatta on Saturday and Sunday.   With approximately 700 competitors over the four days, the volunteers from all participating clubs are still recovering.  Congratulations to Paul Brennan and his crew aboard the Sarah Ashbridge and the Jack Cameron for a job well done.

Thursday saw some exciting racing, but nothing compared to the wild winds of Friday, where only the strong (or insane) survived. Congratulations to Hunter Dejean who finished 10th in the Opti Blue Fleet and Roland Goddard for his 7th place finish in the red fleet.

Adam Gillies was 4th in the Laser fleet while Kyle Harvey placed 8th.

Our top radial sailor was Ainsley Doell at 26th in the 60 boat fleet.  Our top 420 was James Hogan and Chloe Congordeau.

Bridget Latka finished SECOND in the Opti Green Fleet of 38 boats while Paul Workmann was ninth and Nathan Latka 12th.  Congratulations to all. Full results are at http://pcyc.net/index.cfm?ID=471.

The Four Sisters event saw ABYC boats bring home some flags as well.

Martin Staadecker was fifth in the Blue Opti fleet and his brother Paul was 7th.  Hunter Dejean was 10th and Oliver van Rossem was 11th.  Quentin Beelik was 7th in the red fleet with Rowland Goddard 10th.  Paul Workmann was 13th in the green fleet.

In Laser Radials, Sheawn Gershman came FIFTH in the 62 boat fleet, while just about the oldest competitor in the event, Nick Bailey came SECOND in the Laser fleet and won the Master's division (see photo).  Adam Gillies was 8th and Jeff Dejean was ninth, while Kyle Harvey placed 16th.  Full results are at http://pcyc.net/index.cfm?ID=472

Well Done Team ABYC!

Locally, the Summer Bell Buoy Race was held last Sunday in very light air and lumpy seas.  Most of the participants didn't finish, however, some of the spinnaker Division boats did manage to get all the way around the course.  Finishing order was Sona, Crime Scene, Lively and The Cat Came Back.

Results can be found at:       Summer Bell Buoy Race

Finally, the Laser North Americans start mid week at Kingston Yacht Club and the keelboats will be headed off to race in the very last Youngstown Level Regatta this weekend.

That's it for now.
Junior Race Team in Fogh Boorman Regatta

____________________________________________________________________________

The Junior Race Team Green Fleet attended our first summer regatta participating in Fogh Boorman at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club.  Danny Assimakopoulos, Rowland Goddard, Bridget Latka, Nathan Latka and Hunter Dejean all sailed for ABYC at this event.
This was a terrific event for our club, Nathan who was taking part in his first ever regatta started off by coming in 3rd place in his first ever race.  He showed some really strong results and his sailing constantly improved all weekend.

Danny who is only 8 years old sailed a solid regatta.  He ensured that sailed every race and finished them all with a smile.  Using awesome determination Danny showed us who will one day be dominating the fleet.

Bridget had a personal best, getting some of her first ever first place finishes in races.  She began demonstrating some excellent skills and is now a solid force on the team.

Rowland showed some abilities also dominating the fleet.  Participating in just his fourth regatta in only a few months of racing, he worked hard and produced awesome results.  Despite some tough calls on the finish line Rowland got 3rd overall an amazing achievement.

Hunter, who was at the site of her first regatta last September, showed true leadership.  In addition to many strong finishes and multiple bullets, she showed amazing sailing abilities with awesome starts and strong strategies getting her first overall in the regatta.

Hunter, Rowland and Bridget demonstrated their amazing leadership and sportsmanship skills.  In addition to doing really well, they also cheered on and supported their team mates every step of the way. Every time someone crossed the line they were congratulated and given advice from their team mates. ABYC worked as a truly connected team and they should all be really proud of their accomplishments.

Our team participated in Steers and Four Sisters last weekend. Stay tuned next week for more info.

A strong northwest breeze gusting up to 18 knots made for a great night of racing to close out Series 1 on Wednesday July 17th.  Under ideal conditions the race committee was able to get off 4 races.  Dominating the night with 3 bullets was Sarah Douglas sailing a Radial rig.  Sarah is fresh off a victory at Sailfest Sarnia where she bested a fleet of 38 Radials, so her strong performance on the evening was no surprise.  The other first place finish went to DJ Bott making it a clean sweep for the younger generation of sailors on the night.

The combination of shifty and gusting conditions synonymous with a northwest breeze always mean excitement on the dinghy course and this evening was no exception.  There were lots of position changes and a few capsizes to go along.  A special welcome goes out to Julie Hughes.  Julie a long time member of ABYC has been sailing her Laser at Water Rats for the past few years and has just made the move back.  Julie sailed in the middle of the pack most of the night until the final race when she pulled off a 3rd place finish.  As always special thanks goes out to our race committee for the evening of Eli Gershman and Murray MacDonald.

For the series 17 races were sailed coincidentally by 17 different competitors.  The largest turnout for any one night was 12 boats on July 10th.  Congratulations to Grant Dietrich the overall winner of the series (see below for the unofficial top 3).

On a separate note, special thanks go out to Mike Stacey.  Mike a member of the Laser co-op program recently returned from Quebec where he picked up a used Laser in excellent condition that he has generously offered to the co-op program.

Lastly, on August 10th and 11th ABYC will be hosting the Ontario Lasers Master regatta.  A large turnout is expected for the event so even if you are not competing you may want to come down to the club and watch the racing out on the course.  In preparation for the event some of our Master sailors are venturing to regattas outside the club and having a great deal of success.  Jeff Dejean recently won the Fogh Boorman regatta at RHYC and placed 3rd in the Master division at PCYC's Four Sisters Regatta.  Also competing at the Four Sisters was Nick Bailey, Nick took home 1st place in the Master's division and 2nd overall in the Open class.  Congratulations to Nick and Jeff.

Dinghy Series 1 (17 races) top 3 finishers

1st place Grant Dietrich

2nd   place Jeff Dejean

3rd place Nick Bailey
