Come one come all to the second annual ABYC Summerfest Party on Saturday July 13th.

The day starts with a Family Race with the skippers meeting at 12:00 noon. The race is followed by a number of kids events including games and crafts.

A BBQ supper will be followed by ABYC's own Wasted Knights starting at 7:00.

See the posters around the clubhouse for more details.

All in all it will be a busy day and the organizers would welcome volunteers - most particularly parents who would be willing to help manage the kids events in the afternoon.  If you would like to volunteer please contacteither: Camielle Clark ( camielle@secondunit.net ), or Debbie Dockray (debbie_dockray@otpp.com ) or Don Sturgeon ( sturgeon@spectral.ca ).

See you there!

Fireworks Surprise!
- Catherine Fagan, Spirit of Adventure
______________________________________________

Anyone who viewed the fireworks from ABYC will have been surprised by the number of flaming embers that landed in our bay.

Particularly if your boat is on one of our southerly docks, for example Red 'D' or the Green Extention, you might see burn marks on your deck and canvas.

The following pictures were taken on Spirit of Adventure at 06:00 hours on July 2nd.

PCYC visited us on the Canada Day week end.  Their members were advised to "Dress Ship" on entering our harbour and it made for a very pretty and colourful display.  Later on their members enjoyed games of bocce ball on Bay Belle Point.

Last weekend saw several ABYC boats compete at the RCYC Open Regatta.  None was more successful than Winston Beckett and the crew of Fortitude who finished first overall in the IRC Canadian Championships.  Congratulations to Winston and his crew!
Photo of Fortitude taken in 2012

Congratulations as well to Stephen Trevitt and the Crime Scene gang who finished third (? - third? there must be a mistake!) in IRC 2, and to Murray Gainer and the crew of Lively for their fifth place finish in IRC 2.  Other competitors included Calum Semple and the Sona gang, Starwatch with the Flynn family and crew, and Team Looney Tunes.

Congratulations are also in order for one of ABYC's newest Laser Co-Op Members - Gualtiero Guadagni who finished Third in the Laser fleet.

The Junior results were posted in last week's S2S so I won't repeat them here.

The PCYC Open is up next weekend and ABYC will once again be running a course as return payment for their volunteers running a course at the ABYC Open Regatta.  If you are looking for a way to spend time on the water and help with your required contribution hours, contact Calum Semple.  Or, better yet, come out and race!

That's all for this week.

So how does ABYC's Junior program work?  Who are these young sailors.  A recent exchange with Alison Wardman provided us with the following information:

Green Fleet is for beginners of all ages. They have their own race course and it is meant to help young sailors build their skills and confidence in racing.  Once they have some experience in green fleet, they move up to Championship Fleet.

In Championship Fleet, they are scored by age, which is divided into three fleets, White, Blue and Red.  In Championship Fleet, they are also scored overall.  Once in Championship Fleet, sailors have the opportunity to compete in National and International Regattas.

Then there is the Junior Race Team which is comprised of the Green and Championship Fleets.  The sailors then move on to the Senior Race Team when they are too big for Optis or reach the age of 15.

In the photos below, the top photo shows the 2013 ABYC Green Fleet and the bottom photo displays the 2013 ABYC Championship Fleet.

The ABYC Junior Race Team towed over to RCYC on June 21st for the RCYC Open Regatta.  This event was attended by our Green and Championship Fleet teams with a total of twelve athletes competing between the two courses.  The team had some excellent results and a terrific end to the spring season. The team has already started sailing full-time and has a full season ahead of them.
