The weather will be warm .... no guarantee of wind!

As is traditional this year, there is no theme except for those who love Grey Poupon.  The signed up crowd looks to be hungry and thirsty.  We will be serving shish kebabs from Ellas Meat Market on Pape as well as salads, olives, tzatziki and baby roast potatoes.  Don has kindly offered to bring vegetarian main dishes for those who indicate that preference.  Desserts will be sweet!

There will be NO skippers meeting on Saturday morning but we will send out the slip assignments on Friday afternoon or earlier.

Hope to see you holding out your right pinky while toasting the crowd.

Cheers,

Hazel and Dan

Just a note to say thanks to all of the members who have spent countless hours, planting, weeding, watering and generally looking after our Club grounds.  They include Lise Carrier, Nancy Ogden, Mike and Linda Robertson and many others.  I will not be around the Club this summer, but hope that whenever you pass by a weed, you have the heart to pluck it, maybe tending a drooping plant that needs water, as well as picking up debris including beer cans and glasses throughout our gardens.  If we all work together we will keep our Club looking the best on the lake...

Help needed for Wednesday Evening Racing
- Grant Dietrich, Dinghy Fleet Captain
_____________________________________________________________________________

We are looking for people to help run the Wednesday night dinghy races.  A few people have offered to help but as it is a long season, more people will lighten the load.  No experience is necessary as training can be provided.

This year we will be training for the Ontario Master's Championships so we are looking forward to a great season of racing.  Here is a chance to get involved.

The wings and cold beer always taste better after the racing.

If you are able to help out for some of the season please email me at [email protected] .  We start June 5th and finish in September.

Grant Dietrich

Dinghy Fleet Captain

Single & Double Handed Race
____________________________________________________________________

ABYC's annual Single & Double Handed races (combined into 1 race) were held last Saturday.  All boats sailed JaM which was probably a good decision considering that the racers had to mingle with the large fleet of boats from our neighbouring club (TH&SC) who were holding their Sailpast in the same general area.  Everyone made it without incident with the winning boats being First Pilot (Giles Osborne) in the Single Handed fleet and Double time (Sam Robbins) in the Double Handed fleet.  Click on link for full results:

It must be noted that due to a lack of volunteers the RC consisted of 2 people - Rear Commodore Paul Brennan on Sarah Ashbridge and Deepak Mathur on the Mark Boat.  These two individuals did a very commendable job of running the race.  When asked about this situation, Rear Commodore Brennan quipped "In keeping with the spirit of short-handed sailing (well, actually, there was a shortage of volunteers), the committee boat and mark boat were also each run single-handed."

(It should be noted that this required special dispensation from the Rear Commodore, as we usually require club vessels to be double-handed, but with the two vessels in close proximity to our club, with docking support and each other, and fair weather, an exception was granted.)

ABYC mark laying course

- Dave Steenbergen

_______________________________________________________________

ABYC will be running a one-day mark laying course on Saturday June 15.  It will focus on the practical skills which are needed to staff a mark boat on windward-leeward courses with inflatable marks.  We plan to spend the morning on discussion and practice on shore, and the afternoon on the water putting the morning stuff into practice.  We will also be checking out drivers on the ABYC mark boats.

Good mark layers are essential to the success of the ABYC race committee team when we run courses at our own regattas and at regattas hosted by other clubs.  Mark laying is also the hardest race committee job to fill.  The job requires a certain degree of agility and strength as well as willingness to spend the day in a mark boat in a wide range of weather conditions.   Some racing experience is highly desirable.

The number of participants in the course is limited and signing up in advance is required.  We are looking for people who are interested in volunteering at least occasionally as part of the ABYC race committee at LORC events or other regattas.

To sign up for the course, please e-mail Dave Steenbergen ([email protected]).
