 Thank you to many people
- from Commodore Rick Humphrey
____________________________________________________________________
Let me begin by thanking everyone for making this past weekend's Commodore's Ball and Sailpast such resounding successes. It takes a lot of organization and hands-on work by many individuals for events like these to occur. Between piper, bands, set up, blessings, instructions, music, raffles, boat prep, the list goes on and on.
The Commodore's Ball was attended by a full house that enjoyed a wonderful dinner presented by our competent staff. Thanks are extended to our Club Manager, Rennie, who orchestrated the setup and the presentation along with Chef Paul, Albert, and Mike. Rennie was instrumental in the planning of the meal that received many, many compliments.
Thanks are extended to all those members who agreed to prepare the grace and toasts at the Ball. I appreciated their help. Our special guest, Retired Naval Officer, Michael Chorney provided insight into naval traditions for toasts and dinner etiquette. I understand that only a couple of our members are officially allowed to put their elbows on the table.
The Entertainment Committee contacted me way back in February to begin planning the Commodore's Ball and Sailpast. With their help and contacts, they were able to organize really great bands, decorations, special music, donations for a successful raffle that raised over $100 for the Corinthian Fund, advertisements, and keeping the Commodore in line...no small feat! They played an important role.
Out on the water, I had the honour to salute almost 60 boats with my family including my almost 90 year old Mother, the Admiral. We had a great day and I thank Rear Commodore Paul Brennan for the organizing of the Review. He singled-handedly kept all in line.
Another success was the Flag Officer Harbour Tour where over $1,100 was raised for the Junior Sailing Program. We broke last year's record. Thank you for your generosity.
All in all, we had a great time in my estimation and I received much positive feedback. Thanks to everyone for making this a memorable experience and congratulations on a job well-done.
It was a great weekend indeed!
Respectfully submitted, Rick Humphrey, Commodore commodore@abyc.on.ca |

 Greener AND Cheaper
- from Rear Commodore Paul Brennan
___________________________________________ Racers may have already noticed that the Sarah Ashbridge has replaced the disposable air canisters with a 12V powered compressor/horn combination.
Each year, we are eliminating dozens of cans of suspect chemicals from being released into the atmosphere, saving the energy involved in producing, shipping, and recycling non-refillable cans, and saving the club hundreds of dollars. The payback on the new horn should be less than 1/2 a season.
Thanks to Mitchell Kitz for sourcing the horn and doing the installation. Toot toot!

Help needed for Wednesday Evening Racing
- from Grant Dietrich, Dinghy Fleet Captain
_____________________________________________________________________________ We are looking for people to help run the Wednesday night dinghy races. A few people have offered to help but as it is a long season, more people will lighten the load. No experience is necessary as training can be provided. This year we will be training for the Ontario Master's Championships so we are looking forward to a great season of racing. Here is a chance to get involved. The wings and cold beer always taste better after the racing. If you are able to help out for some of the season please email me at grant@torbridge.ca . We start June 5th and finish in September. Grant Dietrich Dinghy Fleet Captain

Wendy Loat's Race Report ______________________________________________________ This weekend saw the Susan Hood Trophy Race, one of the last of the overnight races take place starting and finishing at Port Credit Yacht Club. There was no shortage of thunderstorms and more than one boat suffered storm damage. ABYC was extremely well represented by Crime Scene with Stephen Trevitt and his crew, who finished not only first in their division, but second overall in IRC ( a mere 49 seconds behind the first place boat on corrected time after sailing for 13 hours...). Too bad someone took time to scratch their nose! Winning her division was Graham Toms and the crew of The Cat Came Back. Second in her division was Murray Gainer's Lively & crew. Congratulations to all. Also racing under the ABYC burgee were Larry Harrison and the Merlin M2 crew, Pasquale Leone and the Hammertime II gang as well as Umi Taka sailed by Dennis Dice and crew. Full results can be found at http://www.yachtscoring.com/event_results_detail.cfm?Race_Number=1&eID=766. My apologies if I have missed someone - the clubs aren't mentioned in the results. That's all for this week.

ABYC mark laying course
- from Dave Steenbergen
_______________________________________________________________
ABYC will be running a one-day mark laying course on Saturday June 15. It will focus on the practical skills which are needed to staff a mark boat on windward-leeward courses with inflatable marks. We plan to spend the morning on discussion and practice on shore, and the afternoon on the water putting the morning stuff into practice. We will also be checking out drivers on the ABYC mark boats.
Good mark layers are essential to the success of the ABYC race committee team when we run courses at our own regattas and at regattas hosted by other clubs. Mark laying is also the hardest race committee job to fill. The job requires a certain degree of agility and strength as well as willingness to spend the day in a mark boat in a wide range of weather conditions. Some racing experience is highly desirable.
The number of participants in the course is limited and signing up in advance is required. We are looking for people who are interested in volunteering at least occasionally as part of the ABYC race committee at LORC events or other regattas.
To sign up for the course, please e-mail Dave Steenbergen (dave.steenbergen@rogers.com).
