George Coyles Race
Photo - BCaron
The Cat Came Back gets an extra push from the east wind shortly after the start of last Saturday's George Coyles Tune-Up Race. Stephen Trevitt's J35 Crime Scene went on to victory in the Spinnaker Division and Harvey Harman's CS30 Sail La Vie won the JaM Division. (See ABYC Racing Section for full results)

 Blocks & Gardens
- from Sue Hamilton, Workparty Coordinator
______________________________________________ Did you know we have 'missing' concrete blocks in our bay? Or notice that we seem to be a little short on tires around the docks? This is because many tires for one reason or another (certainly not that boats back out over them) have become detached from their concrete block. I think the estimate is that there are over 25 block 'orphaned' blocks around the docks. This Saturday we are trying to recover as many blocks as possible by having divers from the club identify where these blocks are, so that we can attach chains and tires to them and move them to where we need them around the docks. Recovering the blocks is much better than creating new blocks and avoiding the effort of building forms, pouring concrete and moving the blocks out (not to mention filling up the bay with more blocks!). We need some volunteers to accompany the divers in a boat while they search for the orphaned blocks. Just four people or so, if you have some time.
Also throughout the summer, on a very informal basis, some gardeners are coming out Monday morning to do gardening work. If this suits your schedule and you have an interest in maintaining the gardens, come on out, and bring your own gardening tools.

Please join us for the club cruise to Etobicoke Yacht Club this weekend! We have a few boats signed up but there is space for a few more but you MUST let the office know A.S.A.P. and as long as space is still available we can accommodate you. Dinner and dessert will be served. There will be NO Skipper's Meeting Saturday morning but an email will go out on Friday afternoon to those attending, we are hoping to have assigned slips before we depart ABYC. The thing that EVERYONE has been asking us is "What is this year's theme?" - 2013 is the "Year of No Theme"!
Just relax and enjoy the company of friends and family. Hope to see you there!

Missing Flower Pots
- from Karen Kaiser
___________________________________________
Last fall I purchased 3 large glazed ceramic pots for the green dock deck project. They were stored over the winter in Casa Ballman with the rest of the construction materials to finish the project this spring. Unfortunately they have GONE MISSING.
Each pot weights about 10 pounds and measure 15" diameter by 15" tall and are made of a green/brown glazed ceramic.
We need to have these 3 pots returned to Casa Ballman so that the Green Dock Deck can be finished as planned.

 RC Volunteer Needed
- from Dave Steenbergen
______________________________________________
Calum Semple and I are still looking for ONE race committee volunteer for the ABYC Regatta May 25-26.
We are looking for one assistant mark layer (aka anchor puller). The job requires some strength and agility as well as willingness to spend the day in a small boat, but it doesn't require any race committee experience. If you can only do one day, that would help.

Wendy Loat's Race Report ______________________________________________________ The first week of club racing was not without excitement. The George Coyles Tune-Up race wasn't, although it was rescheduled for the long weekend in case there was someone with no other plans. Tuesday night, one boat showed some rust in her starting form by arriving early, rolling over top of the pvc mark, which didn't react too kindly, apparently, to being shoved under the water, and when it resurfaced, it was in two pieces and attack mode. The result was that it hit Five-Fifteen, and skipper Jim McGuinness, in his first race at ABYC, decided correctly that he didn't need to take penalty turns. Just to clarify, Rule 64.1a) states " when as a consequence of breaking a rule a boat has compelled another boat to break a rule, the other boat shall be exonerated". As you can see from the photos, the broken mark became an obstacle, and this wasn't caused by Five-Fifteen. I heard that there was much conversation about the incident at the bar afterwards, as some people believed Five-Fifteen ought to have done penalty turns. Here's what to do in that situation. PROTEST!!!! Our certified club judges are all looking for work. This was a wasted opportunity for everyone to learn. Thursday's race was in a stiff northwesterly, and as many boats staggered across the start line, the rust was again evident. It was a great one for getting the cobwebs out though. In light of Tuesday's incident, I have decided to include a rule explanation from time to time. If you have a rules question, please send it to me at wendy.loat@bell.net and I'll answer it in a future S2S. That said, if your question concerns something that happens to you on the racecourse, just fly your red flag, hail "Protest" and learn about it afterwards in either the arbitration or protest hearing. Finally, I hope everyone remembered to register for the ABYC Regatta this coming weekend. The late fee kicked in at midnight last night (Tuesday). It should be a great weekend. The broken mark can be followed in the photos - look for the red circles. The initial contact is made in the top photo then Five-Fifteen deals with what is left. |
