Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club New Members' Night
Friday April 19, 2013
_______________________________________________________
Be sure to mark Friday, April 19 on your calendars, the annual ABYC New Members' Night. All members are encouraged to attend this important event to welcome new members to ABYC.
It is an opportunity for members who have joined over the past year to meet as many, more established members of the Club as possible, in a fun and relaxed manner. As usual, we will give each new member a number of drink tickets. A member of longer standing can get a ticket from the new member but they must earn it by engaging the new member in a rewarding conversation.
Please join us at 7 pm for the festivities

 Harbour Event
- from Bob Hedley, VC-Marine
____________________________________
You may have heard about the dramatic seiche or even seen a YouTube video captured by a member who witnessed the event that occurred in our harbour on Wednesday afternoon and early evening. As you will recall, Wednesday was cold and very wet with rain and icy rain. There were a numbers of members on hand who noticed a change in the water flow. Water came rushing into and then out of our harbour at an unprecedented rate. Unfortunately, one of the fingers of the floating docks was damaged during this event. This dock was under repair and had been braced using a work dock. Prior to the video footage being shot, the currents were much stronger and flipped the work dock over. Fortunately, we have some terrific members on hand and work has already begun to clean up and repair the damaged dock. This was an unprecedented event and inquiries are being made to help understand whether this was a weather generated event or were there other contributing factors, such as the storm water outfalls in Coatsworth Cut.
I'll keep you updated as we learn more about this unique hydrodynamic event in Ashbridge's Bay.

 2013 Events Book is Complete!
- from Rear Commodore Paul Brennan
_______________________________________________________________
The 2013 Events book has gone to the printers, and you'll get your own copy no later than Launch weekend. Until that time, you can access the entire book, calendar and all, from the Members Area of abyc.on.ca.
Thank you to our editor, Scott Elliott, to our advertisers (check them out!) and the Sailing Committee and Cruising Committee for all the work that has gone into the year's event plans.

- from Sue Hamilton, Work Party Coordinator
________________________________________________________________________
Many hands are needed for this Saturday's work party. We have decking to finish at the Blue Wall, fender boards to put up at the gas dock, and this note from Stephen Trevitt: We need extra people to help with the wall repairs prior to launch. The incredible sieche we had on Wednesday has created additional work that we cannot complete with the people that have been working on the walls to date. The technical work is complete, but there is a lot of gravel to move and holes to patch. If you can work with a shovel, we need you. And if you can bring a wheelbarrow that's even better. The work that remains is backfilling the blue wall repairs (6 new people needed), filling a sink hole near Sarah's dock (4 new people) and filling a new large sink hole near the dry sail crane (6 new people needed). The blue wall repairs are essential prior to launch and must be completed this coming weekend. The sink holes are major safety concerns and will affect the use of the dry sail crane and the operation of the sailing school until repaired. Leaving them will create larger problems so we need to fix them now. If you are able to work during the week I will be glad to help you get started - contact me by phone (416-898-9747) or email ( trevitt@rogers.com). It works best if a team of 3 or 4 can get together at the same time.

Dinghy Co-op Program
- from Grant Dietrich, Dinghy Fleet Captain
____________________________________________________________
The Dinghy Co-op program has been running at ABYC for about 6 years and consists of 4 lasers. For a modest fee of $200 any member of the club can be part of the program and use these boats for the season. The type of people who would be interested are those who have not sailed for a few years and would like to try again or crew members who would like to gain some more experience.
This year we have reinvested a portion of the revenue from the past few years to purchase some new sails to replace some that were over 30 years old.
This year ABYC will be hosting the Ontario Laser Master's Championship so what better time to get into the class.
Anyone interested in the dinghy co-op program can contact me for more information.

__________________________________________
It is considered normal for our bay to have a seiche occur with some regularity. For the uninitiated, a seiche, as it relates to ABYC, is the rapid movement of water in and out of our bay that causes a significant fluctuation of water levels. This happens constantly and usually goes unnoticed by most people because the change in water level is only a few inches. However once in a while, usually connected to a severe meteorological event, the volume of water that moves in and out of the bay becomes quite large, causing a rise and fall in the water level that is measured in feet. This happened many times last Wednesday, at times causing as much as a 4+ foot change in the water level. As can be seen in the photos below, the level of the bay changed significantly in approximately 5 minute cycles that continued for several hours.
Unfortunately, as the seiche peaked around 5:00pm, the movement of water became quite extreme, causing white water at the entrance of our bay that stretched all the way to the end of Green dock. As chance would have it, one of the new finger docks on Green was being retrofitted and some of its floats had been removed. A work raft had been temporarily placed under the end of the dock to keep it afloat. The force of the water pulled the work raft out from under the dock causing the end of the finger dock to sink (the work raft was turned upside down). As can be seen in the following video taken by ABYC member Ryan Wynott, the water was moving very fast, however the new docks were not affected in any way other than the finger dock that was being worked on. It should be noted that by the time Ryan was able to get to the end of Green Dock and capture the video, much of the force of the seiche had subsided. Although still quite impressive, it had been much worse just minutes before.

 Crane Launch
- from Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chair
________________________________________________________
This year's launch for the crane boats will take place on Saturday, April 27 starting at 8 AM for both cranes. Launch will be completed in one day and will include the boats on the hydraulic trailers. Unlike some other years, there will be no launch activities on Friday. Prior to launch, I will be completing a full survey of all crane boats with respect to cradles, sling marks, keel marking and cradle markings, and boat measurement. Each of these activities is important for the efficient operation of the crane operation, especially for the haulout in the fall. The keel and cradle marking will take place a few days prior to launch. Please do not paint over any of the keel marks unless your boat has multiple marks on her keel and you want to clarify which mark is correct. These marks are important for placing the boats in their cradles in the fall. Likewise, the small CL marks on the cradles should not be painted over. These marks are used when we place the cradles in the fall and they are extremely important to ensuring a correct yard layout. Your cooperation in this matter appreciated. The cradle and sling mark checks are being instituted because we still have too many boats that lack fully compliant cradles and sling marks. Improper sling marks place your boat at risk when we lift it in the fall and can greatly lengthen the amount of time required to place the boat in the cradle. We all pay for this in terms of increased crane time. Please take advantage of your boat being out of the water to mark/adjust sling lifting marks so that the slings will clear the cradle pads and through hulls (it is recognized that in some cases, the cradle pads cannot be completely avoided). I am happy to help anyone who has questions about the best lifting points. The cradle compliance review will look at the general framing of the cradle and the number of pads. Your cooperation is appreciated in this matter. Anyone who does not want their cradle stored should contact Jeff Dejean or me. Otherwise, you can expect your cradle to be folded and stored as soon as possible after your boat has been launched. Please watch this space for additional announcements during the weeks prior to launch.

Install your mooring lines
- from Alison Booz, Dock ladies Coordinator
______________________________________________________
All members are reminded to install your mooring lines before Saturday, April 27 Launch. Please install your dock lines and tire lines. The Club has two aluminum boats with outboards that you can borrow to help you install your mooring lines on your tires. As well, remember to install copper keepers on all your mooring lines so they don't work loose during the season.
Having your dock and tire lines installed before Launch will help the Dock Ladies help you tie up your boat quickly and safely. Thank you for helping make our job easier!
