New Members' Night
Friday April 19, 2013
- from ABYC Membership Committee
__________________________________________
Be sure to mark Friday, April 19 on your calendars, the annual ABYC New Members' Night at the Club. All members are encouraged to attend this important event to welcome new members to the Club.
It is an opportunity for members who have joined over the past year to meet as many, more established members of the Club as possible, in a fun and relaxed manner. As usual, we will give each new member a number of drink tickets. A member of longer standing can get a ticket from the new member but they must earn it by engaging the new member in a rewarding conversation.
Please join us at 7 pm for the festivities.

The need for workers continues.
- from Sue Hamilton, Work Party Co-ordinator
_______________________________________________________________________
This weekend is Easter weekend, and YES to those of you wondering, there will indeed be a work party on Saturday. We still need people to work on the blue wall repairs, and we need help on the work rafts. Both need to be finished before launch and we are short on time. If you are able to come out and lend a hand it will be very much appreciated!
Now on to what is I'm sure everyone's favourite topic... the all day work party. Thanks to those of you who have already signed up for a job. There is an updated list of jobs below (with more jobs added - yay!) and the number of people signed up for each job. The all day work party is scheduled for Saturday, April 6th from 9:00am - 4:00pm. To sign up for a job send an email to abycworkparty@hotmail.com .
Let's get this party started!

 Crane Launch
- from Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chair
________________________________________________________
This year's launch for the crane boats will take place on Saturday, April 27 starting at 8 AM for both cranes. Launch will be completed in one day and will include the boats on the hydraulic trailers. Unlike some other years, there will be no launch activities on Friday. Prior to launch, I will be completing a full survey of all crane boats with respect to cradles, sling marks, keel marking and cradle markings, and boat measurement. Each of these activities is important for the efficient operation of the crane operation, especially for the haulout in the fall. The keel and cradle marking will take place a few days prior to launch. Please do not paint over any of the keel marks unless your boat has multiple marks on her keel and you want to clarify which mark is correct. These marks are important for placing the boats in their cradles in the fall. Likewise, the small CL marks on the cradles should not be painted over. These marks are used when we place the cradles in the fall and they are extremely important to ensuring a correct yard layout. Your cooperation in this matter appreciated. The cradle and sling mark checks are being instituted because we still have too many boats that lack fully compliant cradles and sling marks. Improper sling marks place your boat at risk when we lift it in the fall and can greatly lengthen the amount of time required to place the boat in the cradle. We all pay for this in terms of increased crane time. Please take advantage of your boat being out of the water to mark/adjust sling lifting marks so that the slings will clear the cradle pads and through hulls (it is recognized that in some cases, the cradle pads cannot be completely avoided). I am happy to help anyone who has questions about the best lifting points. The cradle compliance review will look at the general framing of the cradle and the number of pads. Your cooperation is appreciated in this matter. Anyone who does not want their cradle stored should contact Jeff Dejean or me. Otherwise, you can expect your cradle to be folded and stored as soon as possible after your boat has been launched. Please watch this space for additional announcements during the weeks prior to launch.

Winter Lecture Series
- from Jim Allen

April 18, 2013- Lecture: 7:30 PM
Marlaine Koehler-Executive Director, Waterfront Regeneration Trust
The Waterfront Trail: celebrating 20 years of partnership and regeneration. In her presentation, Marlaine will briefly review the founding principles and approach that inspired the creation of the Waterfront Trail and describe what the Trail looks like today and where its is headed in the next five years. Can you really start at one end of the Waterfront Trail and travel to the other? What contribution is the Trail making to the 68 waterfront communities connected to the Trail.
Marlaine Koehler
Executive Director, Waterfront Regeneration Trust
Marlaine Koehler is the Executive Director of the Waterfront Regeneration Trust. The Trust is a registered charity regenerating the waterfront through its signature project, the Waterfront Trail.
She has spent the past 15 years developing and managing an innovative partnership of 68 communities committed to the creation, enhancement and expansion of the Waterfront Trail.
From 2001 to 2007, she led a major infrastructure program, which delivered over $27 million of public and private investment to the Lake Ontario waterfront. The program included 27 community partners and projects ranging from brownfield remediation to habitat restoration and trail construction.
In 2008, Marlaine launched the Great Waterfront Trail Adventure-an 8-day bike ride from one end of the Trail to the other. The Adventure raises the profile of the Trail, promotes waterfront communities and encourages active transportation. Now entering its sixth year, the Great Waterfront Trail Adventure is demonstrating the Trail's potential as a tourism attraction.
In 2011, Marlaine secured funding and provincial support to expand the Waterfront Trail to the next Great Lake-- Lake Erie. The expansion makes the Waterfront Trail 1400 km from Windsor to Quebec and goes a long way toward distinguishing Ontario as an attractive destination for cyclists in Ontario, Quebec and the USA.
Marlaine has written articles for Ekistics and OPPI Journal on trail development and marketing. She served on Minister's Advisory Committee on Trails in 2005. Her career in waterfront regeneration began in 1989 with the Royal Commission on the Future of the Toronto Waterfront.
Marlaine volunteers with the Loran Scholarship, a national scholarship program and the Etobicoke Dolphins Girls Hockey Association.
