- from Sue Hamilton, Work Party Co-ordinator
__________________________________________________________
The date you have all been anxiously awaiting has finally been set! This year's Spring all day work party is scheduled to take place Saturday April 6th from 9:00am - 4:00pm. What's in store for the big day you may be asking yourself? Well, there will be lots of jobs listed in next week's S2S, you can peruse the list and sign up for the job of your choice by sending an email to abycworkparty@hotmail.com. I know, you have to wait another whole week to see what they are, but try to be calm and go about your daily business - the list will be here before you know it!
In the meantime, we still need a big team to help with the wall repairs. The pile driver was not completely fixed last Saturday, but we hope to have everything back in order by next Saturday - Stephen and Roger will continue to work on it Wednesday. To recap the situation, we have only a few Saturday's left to drive in the remaining 25 sheets (we can approx 8 per Saturday if all goes well), and then clean up the area before launch. The work raft project will continue next Saturday, these also must be completed before launch.
Let's get it done!

Not Sure what to wear? Pull out your cruise wear, whether it be a Hawaiian shirt, shorts and flip flops or your favorite blue and white nautical attire, or just wear what you are most comfortable wearing when you are having too much fun......

Congratulations to Dave Steenbergen
- from Rear Commodore Paul Brennan
__________________________________________________________________
ABYC Senior Member Dave Steenbergen has just received certification as a National Race Officer (NRO) by Sail Canada. Dave built up experience over years as Race Committee and then Race Chair at our club races, our regattas, local regattas for both dinghies and keelboats, CORK, and has gone as far afield as Miami to learn about racing in tides and currents. David has flown flags, raised anchors, bailed mark boats, blown whistles, inflated marks, honked horns, drafted and re-drafted sailing instructions, fired guns, judged lines, been soaked, baked, and shook up (sometimes all on the same day), held chopsticks with bits of pink yarn tied to them while trying to look dignified, and made the decisions that are required to get a quality event started and finished with everyone treated fairly. David has also helped teach our club race officers and mark boat operators the job and how to do it better. In addition to the years of experience required, and the references from other NROs, Senior NROs and Judges, this also requires a three day course with a written exam. The last time the exam was given, the average mark from experienced Race Officers was the same as the passing grade --- 85%. David, congratulations from all of us on this acknowledgement of your skills, experience, and hard work. (I also offer thanks to his wife Pat, for putting up with his many absences from gardening and other household chores in the past and foreseeable future!)

Unfortunate Incident

 2013 Sailing Events Calendar
- from Paul McDonald, Sailing Committee
______________________________________________________________ The sun is out, the snow is melting, and we will soon be washing, waxing, sanding and painting our yachts for another summer of sailing, the greatest pastime on earth. Included in this article is the Sailing Events Calendar for the 2013 sailing season and as you can see, all the ABYC sailing events as well as the LORC schedule, the LOSHRS (Lake Ontario Short-handed Racing Series), and some of the other dates for the major regatta's around the lake of interest to our members. Some of our club cruises are also noted, with some cruise destinations yet to be finalized. It is important to note that ABYC is hosting three major regattas this season:
May 25 and 26: ABYC Regatta, the first LORC event of the season. We encourage all of our club racers to enter this event, and if you are not sailing your own boat, there should be lots of opportunities to race as crew, and if you are not racing, we appreciate your assistance in volunteering to assist the Race Committee's on the Race Courses.
August 10 and 11: Ontario Laser Masters Regatta which will showcase some of the best dinghy sailors in the Province old enough to have debts. August 17 and 18: Beneteau First 36.7 Great Lakes Championship Regatta with the addition of the 10R fleet. Especially important is Launch starting Friday April 26, then Saturday and Sunday if necessary. Remember Sailpast on Saturday June 1st. We are overdue for a good weather day, so plan to join your fellow sailors for one of the finest traditions in our sport.
The entire Sailing Events calendar is available at the following link: 2013 Events Calendar ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As always, ABYC needs your assistance to run all our club races, and these other 3 important regattas. Furthermore, we are asked to reciprocate and assist other clubs who assist us in running race courses for our larger events. There are many opportunities to assist on Race Committees, operate a mark boat and set race marks, help with registering, timing, recording and scoring. We have been dependent on a small core of volunteers, especially on the Race Committees, and we hope that you will step forward and help the club fulfill this schedule. Your principal contacts to help out are: Colin Semple, Race Committee Coordinator, and David Steenbergen |
Looking forward to Launch!
