ABYC's Bird Beach

These birds are happy to take advantage of the small beach formed by the low lake level.  This is the area on the lake side of Blue Wall and will probably disappear when (if) the water rises.

Sue Hamilton
Walls, Docks and Rafts
- from Sue Hamilton, Work Party Co-ordinator
_________________________________________________

Yes, it's true - work parties continue every Saturday morning at the club.  Some of the mornings have been pretty frosty, but it hasn't prevented our hearty sailors from coming out to contribute to the important work needed to maintain our club, harbour walls and docks.

1. Stephen Trevitt and team continue to work on wall repairs.  We were experiencing some mechanical issues with the pile driver over the past several weeks, causing some delays to the project.  A big thank you to Johnny Ballman and Roger Marsh for sorting out our somewhat temperamental pile driver and coaxing it back to life.  We were able to finally pile drive a sheet of metal last week!

2. Mike Leroux and team are working on dock repairs.

3. Alfie and the Bubbler Boys are out every week keeping our docks bubbled.

4. There is a project starting up to build 5 new work rafts.  Once the materials are delivered - tentatively scheduled for Feb 16 we will be looking for volunteers to:

    Dismantle existing rafts
Alter the steel frames for the floats
    Install the floats
    Install the decking
    Launch the rafts

Pile driver resurrected
_______________________________________________

Work on the seawall got a big boost last Saturday when a group of ABYC members were able to successfully revive the aging pile driver.  Although this invaluable piece of equipment was instrumental in building the existing wall around our bay as well as the docks, it has not been used for quite a few years and has sat idle near the mast crane area.

Last Saturday morning Stephen Trevitt and his team, in spite of howling winds and freezing temperatures, managed to reactivate the pile driver (with the Technical help of Johnny Ballman, Roger Marsh and Harbour Master Paul Lefneski) and drive the first steel sheet along blue wall.

The resurrection of the pile driver is the result of a lot of effort by many people in addition to those present last Saturday.

From Bob Hedley, VC-Marine:
After the hard working efforts of Stephen Trevitt, our Sea Wall team leader and several key helpers who are dedicated to maintaining our sea walls, docks and harbour, the Pile Driver was back up and running.

I want to acknowledge the leadership of Paul Lefneski our Harbour Master and the team work of Allen Lewis, Roger Marsh, Chris Pappas, Ralph Weckesser, Ron Boudah, John Ballman and others.  It was through their persistence that the nearly 40 year old Pile Driver was brought back to life and was again driving steel plating along blue wall.   We're back in business.

NOAA printable nautical charts

___________________________________________________________

If you are planning on cruising the south shore of Lake Ontario this summer (or to other areas in the U.S.A.), you will need up-to-date charts.  NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has introduced new official BookletCharts that cover the 95,000 miles of U.S. coastline and the Great Lakes.  These contain most of the information found on NOAA's full-scale nautical charts, but it is presented as reduced-scale.

Since the Booklet Charts are easy to access from the Web, easy to print, and easy to carry in a pocket, NOAA officials hope that tens of millions of recreational boaters who may not normally use charts will use these.

Several years ago, the Office of Coast Survey introduced experimental BookletCharts as PDFs in an 8-by-11 inch format, to test public demand and use.  The product has been tremendously successful, receiving kudos from recreational boaters and boating organizations.  Coast Survey has subsequently upgraded the chart displays and navigational information for the official product.

Please note that these are for US areas only.

For those interested, these charts can be accessed at the following link:     BookletCharts

Click on Great Lakes and then select the chart you are interested in.  The charts can be printed or saved as *.pdf files.
